  1. 1 Favourite live group / singer?

Oh, good, starting with an easy one. It has to be Led Zeppelin, back in their pomp in the early 1970s.

2 Who would you (have) most like(d) to see live?

Jimi Hendrix died before I started going to see live bands, so it really has to be Jimi.

    3 Favourite Live Album?

Now things get tricky. I have a lot of favourite live albums. I think though, that on balance it is probably Humble Pie’s 1971 Performance: Rockin’ the Fillmore

    4 Favourite ‘everyday’ tipple?

Apart from Christmas and holidays, I rarely drink during the week, so it has to be tea, Yorkshire tea, made with loose leaves in a pot.

    5 Favourite ‘celebratory’ tipple?

Wine, ideally good quality wine. Probably a cru classé red Bordeaux

    6 Last supper?

If it ts going to be the last, with no turning back and guaratneed oblivion, perhaps I’ll have the fugu fish sashimi.

    7 “Gadget” can’t live without?

Much as I love my computers, which I use all the time, I think that the most useful and important is my Global 20cm cook’s knife, which I’ve owned for around 20 years and which gets used pretty much constantly.

8 What could / should you give up for 2017?

I really need to give up be so lazy and start getting more active again.

    9 Charitable cause?

There are many that I have supported, but the only ones I make regular donations to are the NSPCC and the RSPCA.

10 Book you still haven’t read?

There are far too many. I have piles of books waiting for me to open them.

11 Film you still haven’t seen?

Again, far too many. I am a terrible procrastinator when it comes to films that interest me and I usually end up not going to see them because I keep putting off going and end up waiting for them to be on the telly.

12 Which group / song would you still like to see in The Marconium?

Having finally managed to get King Crimson’s “Exiles” A-listed, I think that I have achieved my ambition in that direction.

  2. OK then!
1 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers of course. And I’ll be seeing them twice in 2017!
    *excited*

2 Buddy Holly I was only 9 when he died

3 The Live Anthology by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Five CDs…all in a box. That counts, right?

4 Red wine – a very acceptable £3.95 from Tesco. Well, from Australia via Tesco.

5 I celebrate Friday every week with a frozen margarita (or two) which used to be my ‘hooray, the working week is over’ treat, but I don’t see why I should give it up just because I’m retired

    6 Chicken curry, very hot

7 Fitbit, which has enabled me to approach some kind of fitness in the last 18 months I’ve had it. Recently it seemed to stop working and I became very distressed – but it started again

8 No, I don’t think I’ll be giving up anything

9 Unicef, Canal and River Trust and Willen Hospice are my regular ones. I give one-off donations as and when

10 I really do think I’ve read ’em all, and the good ones I read over and over again

    11 Winter’s Bone

12 The Box Ticked, my favourite local band. They haven’t played many gigs lately – I do hope they’re not starting to feel it’s not worth the bother. They’ve made one album, which is excellent. (And an EP, but it had most of the same songs on it.) Thiws is my favourite, which they always play for me when I’m at a gig.
    Dear Colleague

  3. Well done Leavey! And Happy New Year! This is harder than it looks …

    1. Favourite live group / singer – Rory Gallagher. RIP.
    2. Who would you (have) most like(d) to see live? – Roy Harper, back in the day.
    3. Favourite Live Album? – Counting Crows – Across A Wire. But I rarely listen to whole albums these days.
    4. Favourite ‘everyday’ tipple? – A good session beer, somewhere around 3.8% so not too pokey (so you can have more of it). Or Mariana Trench, http://www.weirdbeardbrewco.com/our-beers-1/#/core-beers/, which is 5.3% and deserves respect.
    5. Favourite ‘celebratory’ tipple? – Probably gin and tonic, though I haven’t had one for years.
    6. Last supper? – Tarka Salmon (hottish curry) with a chappati and pilau rice, from our local Indian restaurant.
7.“Gadget” can’t live without? – The thing to get the lids off jars, etc. I am feek and weeble.
    8. What could / should you give up for 2017? – Crisps and beer (not likely).
    9. Charitable cause? – I do payroll giving to a lot of charities plus one-off donations here and there so it’s hard to chose. I’ll go for The World Wildlife Fund.
    10. Book you still haven’t read? – “William Morris” by Fiona MacCarthy. It has been on my shelf for years but it’s so big I feel daunted by it. And I hardly read at all any more, except online and music related.
    11. Film you still haven’t seen? – Too many to list, I’m not that fussed about films because I tend to drop off in the middle.
    12. Which group / song would you still like to see in The Marconium? – Pete Atkin “Nothing Left to Say”. Much nommed (by me). http://www.peteatkin.com/play/e5.htm

  4. 1. Favourite live group / singer? Hmmm…tough one 😉
    2. Who would you (have) most like(d) to see live? I’ve been lucky, having seen most of my heroes, including Jimi and (almost) every Dead line-up. Perhaps the Denny/Thompson/Swarbrick (i.e. the Liege and Lief) version of Fairport Convention. I’ve seen other permutations but that was the sweet spot.
    3. Favourite Live Album? Europe ‘72.
    4. Favourite ‘everyday’ tipple? As I drink very little, I shall interpret this a little more broadly: a jazz cigarette.
    5. Favourite ‘celebratory’ tipple? I’m still searching for the alcoholic drink I haven’t stopped liking. Maybe a margarita (that may be the memory of drinking them in a lovely hotel by a lake in Guatemala….).
    6. Last supper? Chicken dopiaza: it always pleases.
    7. “Gadget” can’t live without? I resisted getting one for ages but I have now become attached to my smartphone, like everyone else. It keeps me in contact with my heart’s desire, who doesn’t live nearby.
    8. What could / should you give up for 2017? I should stop smoking tobacco. In a sensible world, I would be able to openly purchase a cannabis vaping device.
    9. Charitable cause? I’ve been in Amnesty and Friends Of The Earth for 20 years and they still seem, to me, to be addressing the most urgent problems: our common inhumanity and selfish consumption of global resources.
    10. Book you still haven’t read? Plenty, but I don’t feel too guilty about it. I’ve read a lot of good ones. I’m really into Dave Eggers at the moment.
    11. Film you still haven’t seen? There are many I have no intention of seeing but I can’t think of one I want to see but haven’t. Just caught up with Embrace Of The Serpent, recommended by sev and others recently: glad I did.
    12. Which group / song would you still like to see in The Marconium? Having joined RR mainly to GTDITL, I can consider my work done (with a little help from my friends) and any further ambition a tad greedy.

Cheers, leavy! Have a good evening, night and year!

    6. Last supper?
Dunno. Had a little falling out with my taste buds a couple of years ago, and nothing’s tasted the same since. For purely nostalgic reasons: fish’n’chips with lashings of malt vinegar eaten straight out of the paper somewhere overlooking Tilbury Docks (are there still working docks at Tilbury?)
    7. “Gadget” can’t live without?
    Has yet to be invented.
    8. What could / should you give up for 2017?

    11. Film you still haven’t seen?

  10. Seeing all the curry fans, I’m curious: have any of you tried Chettinad style food? Hot and spicy…
    * Had most fun with Uriah Heep, so I’ll have to go with them.
    * The tale might have grown in the telling but I’ve been told that a Zappa concert was quite an experience. Likewise Grateful Dead.
    * Allman Brothers live at Filmore East 1971
    * Coffee, South Indian style, is what I have the most
    * Rum. Captain Morgan or when I can get it Old Monk.
    * A full scale Andhra taali, vegetarian.
    * My 4 G device. No question, my life has improved with the net and iPod (though I’m an Android fan)
    * Hmmm. Need to exercise more I guess but I’m fairly certain that I won’t be doing that.
    * Local old age home.
    * Too many books that I haven’t read. Can’t point to a specific one.
    * Not too enthused about movies so I’ll pass on this
    * Shakti. Won’t rest till I get one in. Future gurus, you have been put on notice 😎

    • Ravi – I’ve cooked a Chettinad chicken dish from a book called 50 Great Curries of India by Camellia Panjabi. Very nice dish, and the book is excellent.

    12. Which group / song would you still like to see in The Marconium?
    Honolulu Mountain Daffodils

    • I thought Citizen Kane was ok when I got to see it. A mate of mine is a film studies graduate with some strong opinions and reckons it’s massively overrated, his argument being that every “innovation” in the film had already been done, it was just the first time they’d been done in one film.

  14. 1. Mariah Carey. Oh, wait… I’d like to say the Stones, but i saw them long past peak. I’ll say Bowie, he was fantastic. So was Earth Wind and Fire. I don’t get to see much live these days.

    2. Zep of course. Also Prince or the Dead on a good night.

    3. Good question. I can’t think of one offhand. Guess i’ll have to say a Stones bootleg – Get Your Leeds Lungs Out or Philadelphia Special. The Texas and the Aussie shows were pretty great too.

    4. I don’t seem to drink so much these days so i’ll in all honesty have to say coffee! Otherwise it’s white wine or some sort of lager – Corona probably.

    5. Special tipples – margaritas, especially in summer, better quality white wine than the stuff in the box. A Bloody on the rare occasions i go out to brunch.

    6. No idea. I work in food service, so i’m not a foodie, food is just something to eat for me. So i’ll just say any meal with my family.

    7. My camera. Or my iMac, if that counts.

    8. Should – smoking.

    9. Animals – shelters, rescue, preservation. Also food banks.

    10. War and Peace – saving it for retirement.

    11. Way too many to pick just one.

    12. Hmm. Woulda said the Moody Blues, but they finally got in there. So i’ll say some snotcore and psych – Weezer, Blink 182, Ty Segall, Tame Impala.

  15. So late with this. My whole life seems to run at least a week late.

Favourite live group / singer? Too many to choose from, probably Sufjan Stevens, Caribou would be a contender. Jimi Hendrix was amazing back in the day.
