Tuesday night family tree challenge #6

I’m running with this on Carole’s behalf for a couple of weeks, while she’s on holiday. Today I’ve chosen Aidan Moffat, a Scottish vocalist and musician, best known for his work with Malcolm Middleton in Arab Strap. I don’t know much about him, but have been interested in him since Blimpy alerted us to “Meteorites” by Yann Tiersen. Aidan Moffat wrote and sings lyrics on the track (from Yann Tiersen’s album, Infinity). The video features French actress Clémence Poésy playing the (Scottish male) narrator. Here’s the video and a link to the YouTube playlist https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJi415WCqJ32tqzhSPbB1U-pEKusFTZnz&jct=jFh5-fkpcm7xoI9hZxaWWB48aR885Q. Hope it works, I’m looking forward to you lot expanding the family tree for me!

  1. He was a mystery to me, I’m afraid, but I’ve now discovered that he has been a member of Scottish supergroup The Reindeer Section so I’m adding their song Cartwheels.

  2. I saw Arab Strap in a small bar in Thessaloniki in 2000. They were good, though he was a little dour, and finished most of a bottle of whisky during the set.

Anyway, Belle and Sebastian wrote a song about him – The Boy With The Arab Strap.

  3. Some connections beyond the music industry: Aidan Moffat is on Chemikal Underground, which released Ballads of the Book – collaborations between Scottish musicians and Scottish writers. You can play all of the tracks by clicking on the ‘TRACKS’ icon. http://www.chemikal.co.uk/ballads/

“Song For Irena” – Mike Heron & John Burnside
“Steam Comes Off Our House” – De Rosa & Michel Faber

    “A Sentimental Song” – Lord Cut-Glass & Alasdair Gray
“The Sixth Stone” – Aidan Moffat & Ian Rankin

Where You’re Meant To Be: A film featuring Aidan Moffat, Sheila Stewart and lots of swearing.

Aidan Moffat – The Parting Song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDYOI_J772Q

Think I’ll go for the Aidan Moffat and the Best-ofs: The Atheist’s Lament, though Smash the Mystic Industry has virtuous vitriol.

  4. Aidan Moffat is a good one. I want to see that film that just came out with him playing Scottish folk tunes….

Will go for his collaboration project with Stuart Braithwaite out of Mogwai:

Aloha Hawaii – Towns on the Moon

    …ahhh….not on Youtube…..
