Filthy, Dirty RResults

“The band broke up because I couldn’t bear Rotten anymore because he was an embarrassment with his silly hats and his, like, shabby, dirty, nasty looking appearance”.
Sid Vicious
I asked for filthy, dirty songs…..The interpretation being up to you.

It was an interesting experiment – the starting blocks slipped the rude and lewd songs out – then other forms of dirt piled up in the nominations playlist. Some were too close to home (terminal illness) and other momentarily not appealing (I’m in a house with vomiting children).
Others were ‘just‘ about sex and didn’t feel dirty at all – they obviously weren’t doing it right… I still picked some of these tunes trying to create an interesting playlist as I went.

I will start with the oddity of The Intergalactic Laxative – Donovan
What these hippies were on is anyone’s guess – but dirty drugs spring to mind – random cosmic diapers.
Following on (a turn of phrase I shouldn’t use after that Donovan track) Al Stewart’s ‘In Brooklyn’ paints a picture of grubby, slightly dangerous New York in the late 1960s explained Mari – but it’s still open to interpretation as the “…..Her house was a dusty collection of rusty

Confusion with landings and tunnels

And leaning bookcases and spaces and faces and things
.. makes it sound beautiful to me… overriding the grimier later lines.
A beautifully evocative nomination though – so Mari wins.

Memphis Minnie – Dirty Mother For You‬ gets the old timers nod – as you can just imagine the expressiveness of this sung live on stage (and the change in wording no doubt) .. backed up with Pearl and the Beard – Hot Volcano – not that I find the track dirty – I like an orgasmic interlude in almost everything I do – the playing on the selected video certainly expresses an enjoyable amount of filth .. and my dirty mind just reading anything and everything into the band name – don’t ask!

“Out through the night and the whispering breezes to the place where they keep the imaginary diseases” – Frank Zappa – Stinkfoot. Does what Zappa does.

I had intended a track about mining for a song about industry – but these words summed up the hardships perfectly:
dirty air, dirty laundry, dirty money, dirty rain

a dirty dark at daybreak burning the sugar cane
Sugar Cane by Mary Gauthier.

Arlo Guthrie with Alice’s Restaurant is a song about littering – it’s a long song about littering (and possible a few other themes thrown in for good measure) perfect in every sense… the song that is, NOT the draft.

The Blood – Sewer Brain
“pure punk Alice Cooper shock rock” according to the liner notes, the lyrics certainly wallow in the gutter although perhaps the most notable thing about the track is that it’s seems to be the hideously deformed offspring of a musical copulation between Oi and pomp rock. Brilliant! exclaims wyngatecarpenter, I couldn’t agree more:
“Some like watching movies, And some like smoking pot, We like shafting corpses and then watching the bastards rot, All that’s sacred goes down the drain, I ain’t ashamed, I got me a sewer brain” it’s the charm that does it for me.
Much like:
‪Primus – My Name Is Mud‬
Skinny Puppy – Two Time Grime‬
“Smokey, smoker, smokey, smokeless, sorry”

I’ll add a filthy lucre track-
The Adventures Of Stevie V – Dirty Cash
Mad Doctor X – dirty old man
points out the theme of the year …
I will play out with a track that has vocals by Q-Tee (born Tatiana Mais) on Saint Etienne’s “Filthy” a b-side to “Only Love Can Break Your Heart”
At the time she recorded these songs she was 15 years old… it’s a sexy track – the newspapers would probably condemn it’s existence nowadays while printing invasive and inappropriate photos of teenagers on the following pages.

Filth and dirt has many forms – it’s in the mind of each and every one of us. Be it mild or messy.
It’s under our nails, in our lungs and settling on our skin.
Filth and dirt can be gooey and great AND totally disgusting.

But it’s also destroying the human race.

Happy new year..

  1. Awwww!! Thanks so much, Shane!! FIrst time I’ve made any list in years! And I love Memphis Minnie so much. I think she understands the connection between every kind of dirty we can think of, because she lived it all.

    • Memphis Minnie was brilliant – really enjoyed listening to the old timers tunes – a lot of them were just ‘down and dirty’ in a good way (so not really dirty at all – just sexual) this track had excellent grit and grump involved – had to be included.

  2. Enjoyed this little holiday doodle Shane, and great choice of tunes too which I listened to whilst cleaning up. Ha ha!

Happy New Year to you and all on Spill Street and in RR town

    • Hi fuel, wilemena and the brilliant ‘spill collective –

Thanks for playing with such verve and humour:

If I was taking time to write this up properly my explanation words would expand on why some of my fav’s like; Betty Davis – If I’m in Luck I Might Get Picked Up and Betty Davis – Nasty Gal weren’t included…
I love BD but mostly find her raunchy rather than dirty/filthy… both zedded – so I was saved that choice.

wilemena’s1920′s collection – brilliant innuendo yes – dirty – not close for a smutty artist like me!

‘Bull In The Heather’ by Sonic Youth zedded by me.

      Loveage – Ace Stroker
Femme En Fourrure – Plump Bisquit
      Azealia Banks: 212

just not filthy enough in my imagination – rude yep – bit sweary; guilty. Dirty, well it depends what else I’m thinking of at the time – heehee.

      Feel It – Kate Bush
      PJ Harvey – dress
… both sexy songs (to me) – PJ’s ‘this is love’ feels dirtier – “gonna chase you round the table, wanna touch your head” but that might tell you too much bout my relationships with predatory (I mean strong) women.

… and the Prince tracks just didn’t hit the right spot – rude, blatant, yes – the obvious, yet less graphic ‘Dirty Mind’ could have slipped right in… because you have to imagine the dirtiness of his mind.

Those and many more I really loved – but the ones I chose fitted MY mindset for filthy/dirty songs – I wanted industry waste and a sense of place being filthy – the sexual ones were in the performance and imagination rather than obvious – different ideas of language made impressions on me and a cross section of tunes to play with.
I didn’t have much time – as my children have been ill – so I tried my best.

Much fun, as ever and I can’t wait for maki’s vastly superior hands selection.

cheers all – and a groovy ’13 to the lot of you.

      • I knew I should’ve gone for Femme En Fourrure – Bronco “Oil on my hands, vaseline in my ass, where my stallions at? Salty skin, musky breath, eat it up, suck on it.”

Nah! Will save that for rude songs. Skinny Puppy was a much better choice. Once again, cheers.

      • Oil on my hands?

“Swarfega fingers, I want you there
        Put your dirty angel face
        Between my legs
        And knicker lace”

happy new year fella – a song about sharing the burden of mending the fan belt on a car – using twister style instructions, to direct each others mechanical progress.

  3. Alices Restaurant? You must be joking, The topic’s ‘filth’ for christ sakes and you include a song about waste paper!

    • GF – I asked for filthy, dirty songs – there is no-where more filthy than a garbage dump or the filth of people roadside dumping – it’s the whole set up to the brilliance of the song. They were being nice to take the garbage to the dump – but they ended up in the shit:

      “Havin’ all that room,
seein’ as how they took out all the pews, they decided that they didn’t
have to take out their garbage for a long time.

We got up there, we found all the garbage in there, and we decided it’d be
a friendly gesture for us to take the garbage down to the city dump. So
we took the half a ton of garbage, put it in the back of a red VW
microbus, took shovels and rakes and implements of destruction and headed
      on toward the city dump.

Well we got there and there was a big sign and a chain across across the
dump saying, “Closed on Thanksgiving.” And we had never heard of a dump
closed on Thanksgiving before, and with tears in our eyes we drove off
into the sunset looking for another place to put the garbage.

We didn’t find one. Until we came to a side road, and off the side of the
side road there was another fifteen foot cliff and at the bottom of the
cliff there was another pile of garbage. And we decided that one big pile
is better than two little piles, and rather than bring that one up we
      decided to throw our’s down.”

PS – YES I”M KIDDING – and this line sums up that exasperated joke:

’cause you want to know if I’m moral enough join the army, burn women,
kids, houses and villages – AFTER BEIN’ A LITTERBUG.

It’s emotional, moral, literal, environmental, systematic filth and dirt. Perfect fit.

      • OK Shane, to each his own, if your idea of filth is waste paper and littering so be it.
For 7 years I did a radio show, every year at thanksgiving I played Arlo’s song about Alice’s restaurant, I had lots of calls from listeners, NEVER ever did I get one mentioning FILTH! There were other things on listeners minds. To each his own.

      • GF – you played it on thanksgiving – obviously you didn’t play it on ‘Keep America tidy’ day … if you did – then it’s point about littering and garbage would be to the fore.

Garbage is dirt, it’s filth – the waste of products is destroying humans ability to survive on this planet .. it’s a knock on effect from the inability of people to re-use, not just chuck things away in huge dumps, is one of the most disgusting things about this era. Tiding up after yourselves should be paramount to sharing this planet (the smallest thing can have a disastrous effect on the eco system) – Thankfully, since this song was written recycling has grown – waste has been reduced – but there’s still filthy, disgusting people who DO NOT – and will just dump waste about the planet.

That can be envelopes to dirty bombs.

The theme was filthy, dirty songs – your listeners WOULD NOT mention that the removal of garbage was a metaphor for the draft – because that isn’t what they were listening for – on thanksgiving day.
If you played it while talking about garbage or the ecosystem or during a program about filth and dirt – everyone would pick up on the significance of GARBAGE in the lyrics.

        It was nominated –
It’s pretty damn obviously about garbage (PLUS other BIG themes)
        garbage IS filthy and dirty.

Other things are filthy and dirty – I also picked them – but it’s not as FUNNY as having the brilliant ‘Alice’s Restaurant Massacree’ in the list:

’cause you want to know if I’m moral enough join the army, burn women,
kids, houses and villages – AFTER BEIN’ A LITTERBUG.

“Shrink, I can get anything I want at Alice’s restaurant – and that includes filth and dirt”

  4. I wonder if I can add this in? – a few that I would have nominated if I was playing:

    Filthy Names Jack
Dirty Sneakers And Underwear Emily Wells
Love Is A Dirty Word Jason Collett
Dirty Knives The Manhattan Love Suicides
Dirty Water The Jesus & Mary Chain
Dirty Paws Of Monsters and Men
Dirty Snow (Trentemøller Remix) Giana Factory
    This Is Love PJ Harvey
    Hattonrigg Pit Disaster De Rosa
    Filthy Saint Etienne
Where’s Your Dirty Mind Avi Buffalo
    Dirty Mind (Prince) Bent
    Down and Dirty Little Axe
Dirty Water k-os Feat. Sam Roberts
    Dirty Entertainers The Ragga Twins
    Sludgefeast Dinosaur Jr.

    • Oh, my 1920’s collection. I just imagine all these singers and players in theaters and clubs back then, turning their audiences and each other on with these playful, cheeky songs, with great rhythm and backing, then having hot sex with everyone and each other at after show gin-house parties. But that’s just me. Dirty? Oh yes! Sex must be dirty. Can’t imagine having clean sex . . . unless you mean taking care not to catch the clap, and then it would have to be clean ie. wearing a wet suit but on the other hand, I wouldn’t knowingly go near anyone with VD anyway. Cheerio x

      • Thank you Shane x me likes me some hot fuzz, not the film (well that’s ok, not as good as Spaced) but I ain’t talkin bout that . . .

Fuel. I haven’t got round to watching Boardwalk Empire, but I do have a big crush on Steve Buscemi, ever since I saw him in Trees Lounge where he played an alkie bum (yep, I’m so classy me) who sometimes drove an ice-cream van. Our ice-cream van man just doesn’t do anything for me I’m afraid, greasy slimeball, and his so-called tempting jingle is the MOTD theme tune!! which just turns me off right away.

Anyway, here’s a licky ditty for both of you

  5. Dirty Snow. That is brilliant. Ace tune. Just like the snow now.

@ Wilemena. That’s why I watch Boardwalk Empire. Cheerio

  6. Pearl and the Beard on the playlist – I am mighty chuffed! Thank you, Shane!
(Now, can you arrange to beam me over next time they come to England?)
