2 turntables and a crate of sane

nilpferd and steenbeck started up an idea about hip hop instrumentals on the RJD2 post .. so having filtered three different files worth – here’s an hour and a half (anyone got about that much time to waste?) kind of tunes loosely coming in under that banner. What I’ve done is try and make it interesting – i know – always helps – tried not to frighten the natives of the ‘spill too much. and produced something that would play out well… go on give it a spin, it’s easier to understand than cricket.
… and if anyone has a favorite tune that could squeeze into the hip hop instrumental getto.. please shout out, if there’s enough interest we’ll open a dropbox file… enjoy.

  1. Excellent.. look forward to these this evening. I’ll maybe get something sorted Sunday, depending on how long I spend at the office..

  2. Just getting into it.. R&C + Buck top the first playlist for me, but all good. Dark Lady is a fantastic track.

I think Pest’s Relief is at three on the second playlist, not one.. not sure what Nr. 1 is, but I really like it.. I think we need these in dropbox… most of these are new to me.

    • Hardcore Hip-Hop [Instrumental] DJ Shadow is first up in section two.

hadn’t noticed a certain: The Ageing Young Rebel (Gentle Cruety) DJ Food Feat. Ken Nordine Xen Cuts (Disc 2) being nominated yet ( these track names slip off my tongue – can’t you tell) Does it fit – you are usually first up with Xen cuts.

Didn’t realize I used my other dropbox – see what I can do, once i’ve sorted my AGE problem.

      • Ageing young rebel is a great shout- I hadn’t thought of that. Between you, me, and shoey we must have nommed that track for ten themes already- I thought it would have fit particularly well for the cruelty theme.

My only NT thought this week was Mr. Scruff’s Come on grandad.
Film time now… off to watch some Romanians trying to get married.

I’ll catch the rest of playlists 2 and 3 tomorrow, it’ll make a good breakfast soundtrack.

  3. Late breakfast.. what a stressful day. I think I’ll liveblog the playlists as a reward. (For me, not anyone else):
Rae and Christian… normally operatic vocals turn me off, this works very well though- plenty of energy with the brass stabs.
Bonobo keeps the thoughtful mood, it’s restful despite all the different elements. I really like Homelife on a second listen- the organ reminds me of the incidental music on Tati’s Playtime, coming in little chaotic bursts. This sounds really gallic. A bit like a sixties washing powder ad.
Buck 65 is a good contrast- very simple to start with, nice textures. Things are getting distorted, but the flute-like synth breaks it up. Now everything comes in at once- good shoegaze feel to this one.
RJD2 is very versatile- I like the way he mixes in the acoustic piano, which also lifts the playlist at this point after the electronics. Builds well with the choral vocals.
Dark Lady goes down like a cold beer. The sparkling Rhodes gives it a good head, handclaps and funky bassline add plenty of body. Even though I’m drinking wine.
Intergalactic reminds me of the arcade style games on Machinarium, it’s so old skool. Ever so slightly Daft Punkish, this mix. Sandra thinks the bass sounds like a rumbly tummy. I think I need to go and get some snacks.
End of playlist 1. Stress reduction factor=80%.

      • Cheers, I’m off onto Shoey’s now.. got sidetracked myself trying to figure out what the DJ Format sample was, but I gave up. That’s really perked up my day, anyhow.

  4. Awesome Shadow track to start the second playlist, a new one to me. Los Locos Cubanos is another legendary Xen Cuts clip, though I recall Shoey’s disappointment with Up, bustle & out albums. This track is easily their best.
Intrigued by Pest, may well get the album this is off. Beautiful bit of guitar lifted here for the samples. This one (plus a bit of cheese) has knocked my stress level down to single figures.
Blockhead works nicely ironic in this context.
Ah, Kele hardens things up a bit- I’ve eaten too much cheese to wiggle anything though. Think you’re pushing the definition of instrumental hip hop here.. doesn’t matter, great riff developing now.. love that deep, turn-the-treble-off moment where everything dives down, then comes back up again. More rumbly tummy bass. Where did I put that cheese..
Woah.. fuzztastic Format! Not even my newly acquired double chin can prevent me nodding my head to this. That’s an Elvis Presley sample, from Change of habit. No, I just looked it up.
Some nice Rockit-style Fairlight to end the list from Art of Noise.

    • Pest are an oddity – I got ‘Necessary Measures’ as a light hearted backing for mixes, but you can delve quite deep into them or leave it as throwaway, similar in a way to Kid Koala – does that make sense?

I play tracks from it a lot and have added most to playlists here… (that bloody bicycle track I was racking my brains for is actually ‘St. Pest’ but the kid is wishing for a Motorbike.. not bicycle… at least I’ve now remembered)

oh the – pushing the definition of instrumental hip hop – even on a free reign I have to – it’s in the genes.
(if I could get on old age RR – Cocoon by Hector Zazou would be nominated – with an interesting argument about the ’80s regeneration movie making it valid)

  5. More fantastic Format to start Playlist 3. That piano riff sounds vaguely familiar, can’t quite place it though.
Very sympathetic Tony Allen mix, a lot of attention paid to the drum. That’s the way it should be.
Vadim’s another familiar NT name, though I only have him on complilations. This fits well with the Tony Allen.
Oh, some clarinet- that’s nice. Reminds me I should have put Dzihan and Kamien into my playlist. I think there are a couple of hip hopped Fanfare Ciocarlia tracks around, though I always find the band funkier on their own. The Mad Prof. remix here is good though.
Someone at Darkstar has leaned on the keyboard, Miles Davis style. This one’s slightly electro poppy for my tastes, I think.
Some groovy effects on the DJ Nuts, Kid Koala style freakiness. DJ Shadow remains the master. Thanks for the ride! Homelife, Pest, and DJ Format definitely onto my to-get list.

  6. It was a tough call going first – I tried not to got straight down the obvious route, but some were needed.
I also missed the trip hop angle that you and shoey picked up on (a big chunk of my life that)

I’m looking forward to a steen and ejd list if they get it together.. If I get it sorted this week – I will send you a cd of my longlist… cheers for the listen.. good fun.

  7. I know what you mean re Pest.. there are a couple of other NT artists like that too. Necessary Measures sounds like something I’d be into.
It was a great mix first up.. I tried to avoid Ninja Tunes, but ended up failing.. did at least swerve past acid jazz though. CD would be fab. Am equally looking forward to further instalments.

  8. enjoyed this a lot Shane…..easy on the ear and full of the usual Shane quirkiness and idiosyncracies….DJ Format was the star of the show for me too, will have to see what I can track down

  9. What are you kids going on about? What’s all this NOISE! What are these weird sounds! Give me a tune I can whistle, damn it!!

This is a good list, Shane! I’m really enjoying it. I like the Shadow and format a lot. Love the Pest – sweet and trancey. REminds me of the Abe Vigoda track I posted a while back. WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU WEREN’T PAYING ATTENTION?

I like the out-to-lunch remixes of some more classically hip hoppy songs as well.

Nicely done, young man. Keep up the good work.
