thank you for the listen DP - bit quiet this week isn't it?

it was rather a tuneful indie (well my idea of tuneful) selection this week - the only darkness is the underlying vanity of such magazines in some tracks... no worries about doing playlists a proper justice - I make them to listen to, NOT to heavily analyse... sometimes it's good to delve deeper into tracks, but it's not always needed.
Mouth magazine was a prototype set up in about 1992 that never went anywhere (a different title was used - one that was derivative of Mad magazine) I just googled Mouth magazine and there are loads of them about - I did copy write it - wonder if I could get royalties?
Cheers for listening in to the sane DJ booth.

1. Up The Hill Backwards: Like the intro and the end - the middle is a bit plodding - but I'm not a Bowie fan.
2. Fear Is The Mother Of Violence: This stays, Peter Gabriel can do no wrong.
3. The Emperor In His War Room: Gosh. This took me back to somewhere I'd forgotten I'd been. Terrific. Keep.
4. I Talk To The Wind:One of my favourite Crimson songs. This is going to be a tough choice.
5. Wave: Hate the vocal (this is good, I've found something to dislike). I like the guitar, though.
6. Flight Of The Ibis: Kind of washed over me like a gentle, warm wave on a sunny day.
7. Something in 4/4 Time: Catchy, though not great. I used to like Hall and Oates.
8. Dreamtime: Well, this is lovely too.
9. Child: The intro reminds me of "Here" by America, although the resemblance ends there. Nice flute (I like flutes, used to play).
10. North Star: Superb. Sigh. (Plays it again). Reminds me of "Albatross" by Fleetwood Mac, just the guitar riff in the background. I see Chris has already said this ...
11. Exiles: This and "Book of Saturday" are another two of my favourite Crimson tracks. I love this version.

Great list Carole, and a great achievement considering you've just moved house. One of the Davids will have to go; I think I can tolerate the Bowie but David Sylvian's voice really turns me off, so that's the one to be consigned to the deep. (Sorry, Beth).

1. Up The Hill Backwards. Hmmm… the interesting instrumental 7/4 bits seem to be grafted on to rather a nonentity of a song. Not convinced.
2. Fear Is The Mother Of Violence. Very sweet and a perfect length. Lovely.
3. The Emperor In His War Room. It’s nice to hear some flutes once in a while, and I appreciate the confidence required to produce epics like this, but drama-prog was never really my cuppa. Interesting wig-out near the end – definite value added by Fripp there.
4. I Talk To The Wind. More flute! Yay! And a bassoon? It shouldn’t be a surprise that the wind doesn’t hear, surely? Or is it about an attempted conversation with the wind section?
5. Wave. Some very Japan percussion-y stuff in there and there’s a very Ferry sound to Mr Sylvian’s voice on this one. Love the horn breaks (and, to a lesser extent, the guitar breaks); pity about that effing drum. A bit overlong?
6. Flight Of The Ibis. Very well arranged and produced but very much of its time, I fear.
7. Something in 4/4 Time. Did Daryl do a lot that wasn’t in 4/4 time, or is this a Fripp joke? I was coping until the falsetto chorus. The fade came much, much too late.
8. Dreamtime. Beautiful enunciation and more lovely flutes! Nice bass but, overall, a bit too polite. I hear the sound of print dresses and turtle-neck sweaters.
9. Child. The dramatic tone again makes me a little uneasy but the arrangement is rather good. Or maybe I’m just a sucker for flutes?
10. North Star. A lovely, relaxed feel to the music here (echoes of Albatross?). Maybe I’d prefer one of the versions with a different singer, though.
11. Exiles. Whilst I appreciate the musicality, it seems a bit artificially-complex to my ears. Nice bass again and great banter at the end.

Someone who deliberately writes music about a cosmic voyage that depicts seven stages of altered consciousness is unlikely to appeal to a huge audience but I’m glad he made/makes the attempt. I can live without Daryl Hall as a rule but, because it doesn’t work as a cohesive song, I’ll ditch the Bowie.

Thanks, Carole, but the closest I like to get to prog is probably Terrapin Station….

7. Daryll Hall - probably the less said the better.

8. I enjoy her singing on the first Fairport album, especially Chelsea Morning, this is lovely. I will have to check her out some more, I didn't know she had returned to releasing music.

9. Mmm, androgynous vocal to begin with which I quite like, the flute is nice.

10. See number 7

11. Rather a glorious cacophony, the violin is very appealing to me.

The dustbin of history is going to get Daryll Hall, I'm afraid, but I enjoyed most of the list :-)
