  1. sun is shinning – family are out – neighbours are hard of hearing – noise ahoy!

Scientists – growly vocal with nice chugging along backing – good opener.

Parquet Courts – first couple of note made me believe the monkees were in the room – then the VU started playing and singing – this is all good.

Ty – does his thing in a pebbles style.

ouch! sic alps – squeals open … don’t it?

thee attacks is almost a perfect definition of groovy garage.

king tough – very rock anthem. growing on me after 2nd listen (it felt too 60′s first time out)

Parquet Courts and Thee Attacks were my fav’s but I enjoyed rollocking thrill of the whole list …. ace work amy. Much needed clearing out of my cobwebbed ears.

  2. Glad you enjoyed. Scientists are 70′s / 80′s Aussie post punkers – Pairubu probably knows them. Parquet Courts – NY via Texas. Ace soloing in that one. Panther is probably already a Ty fan, as he’s part of the SF garage gang along with Thee Oh Sees. Sic Alps – more SF garagers. That track is actually a legal download, not a rip – and yet it still sounds like that. Thee Attacks – Danes! King Tuff – Vermonter. Yeah, it’s a bit smoother and a bit more rock. Which works with me.

I have a Spill Game list coming up in a few weeks – thought about doing this sort of thing but though 11 might be a bit much for our friends with more sensitive eardrums. So i’ll do something a bit different.

    Can box if anyone wants.

  3. You know I was just thinking that Scientists sounded Australian, then I read your comment. Adelaide? Reminds me of the bands Nick Cave hung around with, some of whom were in the Dogs in Space film. I like it.

I admit I haven’t heard of any of these bands, it not being an area I spend much time in, but they’re sounding good to my ears. Will comment in a minute as my Mac’s a bit weird today.

      • mmm, that was probably why I thought that too. I listened to some of The Scientists other songs and it wasn’t so apparent, plus they’re from Perth which is miles away, but I think they share a style of singing or something. I like it.

    • That’s in the Haight in San Francisco.

Sic Alps may be my favorite of the batch :) But the dodgy sounding quality is irritating to me. A lot of Sic Alps is tamer than that one. I like a lot of Ty stuff, that one is pretty tame compared to a lot of other stuff they do.

      Thanks for listening!

      • There are actually a vatreiy of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to carry up. I provide the ideas above as common inspiration however clearly there are questions just like the one you carry up the place a very powerful factor might be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if greatest practices have emerged around things like that, however I am certain that your job is clearly recognized as a fair game. Each girls and boys really feel the influence of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.

  4. Yes, it’s all good, love it, thanks so much for posting, Thee Attacks is perfecto. Tho I haven;t heard Ty sounding so much like The Hives before, and I really wished Parquet Court had freaked out more in the last third. Fab playlist – more please!

    • Thanks for listening, glad you enjoyed! Might try to sneak a few in my Spill Game list in a few weeks. Have you heard the Black Lips? Would have slipped one in here, but i did a mini-post a few months ago on them. I do love the Hives and even considered slipping one in after i posted. Could have put in some Jay Reatard too, but honestly i like Ty a lot better.

  5. Ace list Amy – really did the job.

Ty had a great year, releasing three albums & all of them better than anything that came before.

  6. I going to be the curmudgeon here and say that I really don’t go a whole bundle on “new” garage stuff.
Off those offered only the King Tuff track made it all the way through.
I think it’s mainly to do with the production. They seem to me to be trying too hard to recreate the crappy 60s sound.
It comes across, to me, as a little forced.
There’s nothing wrong with drawing inspiration from the past but I’d prefer to hear it used in a “new” way not as a recreation of times gone by.

    Old Punks, eh ?
We never die, we just fad…e…a…..w……..a…….

    • I’d agree with you on the forced crappy production on some – i sure don’t like it on the Sic Alps track, i’d rather just hear the tune. Surprised that you liked the King Tuff though. Not sure the production on the Scientists was as crappy as it sounds – that one is a r** as i couldn’t find the version i wanted for download. And that one actually was 70′s…

      Thanks for listening!

  7. loved all of those, knew Ty (ah…you know me too well Amy – see my Festive Spill #3 pick!) and Parquet Courts already and really dug Thee Attacks – cheers for those!

    • Thanks, Panth!

My guru week coincided with the week of Festive Spill posts so i didn’t get to listen that week. Started to give it a go after the holidays, got as far as halfway through the #3′s, and my brain shut down and couldn’t listen to music – i guess i needed silence to try to sort some real life stuff out. Which still hasn’t happened yet – but the fact that i’m able to listen to music again give me hope that i may get reality sorted sometime soon…

  8. Love the sounds these bands make. I played them as soon as you posted and started a long post about The Last, Chesterfield Kings and Nuggetsy bands in general but then deleted it. Great bands. There isn’t one I wouldn’t have in the house. Ty Segall is the one I really like, but funnily enough I don’t buy this type of music much anymore. Strange that.

There’s always been a big garage scene in Finland. Sweatmaster were my faves and Black Magic Six hot the spot nowadays and I think I’m going to like Black Lizard a lot. So here’s some noise. Sorry for doing the links the wrong way.

And now I have to go and play the Allah Las

    • I’m so sorry that you deleted that post!

I’m up in the middle of the night here for a coffee and cigarette, will listen to the tunes later when i’m up for the day.

Why you may not have them in your house – you have to wade through a lot of chaff to get to the wheat of garage music these days. There is a lot of good stuff out there, there is also an awful lot of crap. Can be hard on the eardrums to find the good stuff.

I love that Allah-Las song though, and very nearly included it. The Graun just hapened to have a post on them the day i did this post so i skipped it. As it happened, i had just been listening to them for a few days previously, and have another one of theirs (not this one) slated for my Spill Game list…

    • Liked Sweatmaster the best – nice crunchy guitars!

Occurred to me that i could have easily put the Vines on the list – I so love this song -

    • Yes to all those bands, although I don’t connect with the Vines or the Black Lips much; it’s a blind spot. There was a video installation in Nottingham called “Floating Coffins” about abandonded ships polluting Mauritania and in a lovely coincidence the new Thee Oh Sees album is called “Floating Coffin”. Shame I couldn’t work that into last weeks theme.

      Here’s the ace Lupine Dominus

  9. Ha. Garage rock has always had some shite but god those bands seemed to love what they were doing; part of the attraction for me.

The post was about how the sound of those bands has become merged with some orginal Nuggets in my head, so much so that the distance between the sixties and eighties doesn’t seem as vast as it was. It was also about how some bands had great tunes and lines that stayed in my head for years but as the digital age let me rediscover them I realised that they sounded crap and dated compared to the versions in my head, so I stopped looking backwards.

The last part were all these bands in small towns who were keeping the flame alive while seemingly being less visible than they were in the early 1980s.

Nowadays any genre you want is available.

BTW. The Allah Las are the real deal for me. Everything I’ve heard has made me want to go out and buy their stuff. I expect I will and then I’ll just go overboard on that stuff. Keep with hunting for the silence – for me it’s what makes the noise possible. Very easy to say that in Finland though. Here’s The Holograms (Swedish and great)

  10. just had a listen to a few more by them. i love the way the vocals are so clear and so catchy. i hate that the reviewer had to mention New York rock history for half the article. going to order them and the Allah Las today. the shop has the vinyl version of the Allah Las but not the CD. How veery 1986

here’s one i listened to yesterday.

she’s not normally my (musical) taste but i like this a lot. she sure knows how to use her fingers.

  11. It WILL be lovely when it is done (and figenrs crossed it is soon)We have a similar issue whole parts of the floor are currently being taken back up and replaced fortunately like you we haven’t paid the final bill so they are motivated to get it doneHang on in there
