  1. “Lifeblood” by Halls is stupendous. Love that sound. Also loved Strangers Die Every Day, Raymen, The National, Ghislain Poirier, Singers & Players & Congo Ashanti Roy. SDED reminded me that I forgot to nom at least Tenhi songs. Oh well, the blog got lucky there…

    • Tenhi sound interesting – any particular album to start with?

Glad someone likes Halls – was starting to think it was just me.

      Cheers, Fuel.

      • What would I recommend? Well the Tenhi template is something very slow with a few lyrics sketching an image of a small detail of an unforgiving natural world. Baritone vocals that fit mournful, wandering music. (They have actually written cheerful lyrics to a couple of songs but not put vocals to the song.) And sometimes they remember that the drum is something that you can hit to make a rhythmic sound with. I imagine them in the studio saying “Can you make that violin sound even sadder”. They go well with early morning silence and moments of contemplation. They don’t wander far from this template. Think of birds in cold weather sitting still in trees for ages, soaring high then landing and bouncing to their food and stabbing and swallowing it before being still again.

If you want to know what the songs are about and if you are buying the digital format I’d start with something older than Saivo as they have the impressionistic English lyrics online. If you are buying the CD then Saivo has lovely artwork and the lyrics in English and Finnish and that’s where I’d start. Maybe Maaäet or Väre. The triple CD “Folk Aesthetic” is nice selection of early EPs, unreleased and rare, and new recordings. But that’s well over three hours of folk gloom. ( I tend to skip some of the songs, unless in the mood.) If you want I could send some MP3s your way.

      • Will digitise a few tracks from a selection of the CDs and send them your way. Might start with some early Stranglers-style waltzing.

  2. Seem to really crave silence lately and find i’m to listen to much music. Thought i’d give this a try – what a great first set. Especially loved Gallon Drunk and Godflesh. Awesome.

    • Loved the first three of the second set, especially Mute Math. And loved the Nina Nanastasia song too – thing her songs have been a standout for me on all of your playlists that she’s shown up on.

      • heehee Thank you – that’s what I need a bloody big wall to deface! I haven’t managed to do any artwork this year yet – and it drags me down – I did manage to help the boys create Tintin’s dog in the snow though – that was fun.

It’s a well worked video, isn’t it – the colour intensifying with the release of energy.

I’ve been thinking of you too – and really hope whatever is going on in your world is improving …. all things pass, hopefully. xxx

    • Yeah it’s a great vid, and spot on with the colour thing. I don’t know why they split up, as some nice tunes on their albums. We all feel like that guy from time to time don’t we? I do hope you get to do some artwork soon. It must be so frustrating when you can’t get anything done. Having a young family isn’t easy either is it? No matter how much you love em.

As for me, I’m ok thanks. Nothing life threatening. Just suffering from a prolonged attack of acute noises in me head which has been a bit like this. But fighting it slowly with the help of some good dub (the only sounds that don’t make it worse) and some quality herbal medication :)

      xxx

      • heehee – it came up with ‘FAILED TO OPEN’ and ‘can’t find the server’ … sums up my head at the moment (and made me laugh – even if it was a mistake) ….

        great quick interview here:
Roots Manuva: ‘My whole career is just like a massive mistake’

possibly best not to listen to the scratchy noises in this (but it fits):

But pain leads to gain so we dare not stagnate
We elevate to that next state, motion divine
Glisten like crystal ball and stand tall
        With this knowledge and overstanding
Enterprise landing, bringing dem new brands of buff
Yes, we come proper with potency
Ain’t no blood in my body, it’s liquid soul in my vein
I dance on a thin line of sane and deranged

        splendid.

    • Ha ha! Me too when I checked the link. Fuck wit fuck up me!

Ta for Rodders. Love him! That interview put a big smile on me face. And Movements a big fave. Left . . right. . left . . right. The big soundscapes in the Roots toons are actually good medicine. The cruffatin liveth!
      Take care you x
