There’s a new (!!) Suede song here. It’s called “Barriers”, a taster for their new album which is due in March. I know there’s a lot of Suede fans on The ‘Spill, so I’m most interested to see what you think. Let’s discuss in the comments below!

First thought: the intro sounds like “Babies” by Pulp.
Second thought (not directly linked to the song itself): Why didn’t Brett record his most recent solo album as Suede? It would have conquered the world!!
I didn’t hear anything other than the Brittle Heart single, but that was a work of genius. Although I always wanted to ask Chris if it was guilty of using one of those chords he’s so unfond of (suspended fourths, is it?) at about the 3.04 mark. (That’s my favourite bit of the song, natch.)
It isn’t a sus4 in at 3.04 in Brittle Heart, bish, it’s a dominant (I think that’s what you call it: I never did music theory. The song is in F and that chord is C.) However, there’s one under the word ‘Brittle’ in the melody line.
I’ve not listened to this new track as I’m not sure I’m ready to accept viinyl.com into my life.
Ah, thanks for clearing that up, Chris! Is viinyl.com a bit evil? I’d never heard of it until clicking through to the Suede link.
No idea about viinyl.com’s level of evil, bish; I just prefer to know what I’m letting myself in for before signing up to something. Anyway, the site is now letting me play the track without signing up. So I’m off for ‘a nice cup of tea and a biscuit’ rather than say anything untoward (it’s not really my thing).
Third thought: it sounds a lot like Suede.
Ah, well done for getting this up, sir.
I think it sounds a bit like “Seven”-era James. (But with Brett Anderson singing, obviously.) I think I’d like it to sound slightly camper or glammier or more preposterous, musically speaking. But I’m prepared for the album to be great – this is a track they’re giving away for free after all. And I’ve only listened to it three times, so it may well grow on me over the next few days.
And thanks for pointing it out in the first place Bish! I do agree, that this isn’t even the single, and I’m good with it.
weird, I was just downloading this when your post came up! I do think there is a bit of a Simple Minds/U2 cosiness to the sound initially,( is it the robust bass and drums at the beginning?), but then there’s Brett’s lovely voice and the downright grin-worthy bit where the guitarist utterly rips off Bernard Butler’s sound.
Then Brett does that little trill of notes he sometimes affects, it is a bit Suede by numbers, but they’re allowed and I do love them so. it does sound a lot like Suede, and all the better for it
My fourth thought was Oakes is SO ripping the Butler of 20-odd years ago, but this is the only context in which it would work!
Suede are great and any Suede sounding record by Suede will be great. It was only when Suede didn’t really sound like Suede that things went a bit pear-shaped.
Quite so, if you can’t steal from your own back catalogue, there’s something wrong with the world see also The Cult.
Heard it earlier on Radcliffe & Maconie, thought it wasn’t bad, certainly sounds like Suede. Come to think of it The Bernard appears to be in self-imposed producery retirement – wish he’d get gigging again.
I made the mistake of reading the comments on the GU article – eeech, it reminded me why I stopped reading the comments on things like that.
I’m so thoroughly sick of all the unrelenting negativity that the internet seems to channel from folks. If you can’t say anything nice (or decent), don’t say anything at all – really, why bother? Why waste your time when you could be having a nice cup of tea and a biscuit and be listening to something you do like.
Yeah, I started reading them after actually having found it elsewhere (The Line of Best Fit). Gave up quite quickly.
well, it sounded pretty good to me. Like Suede crossed with the last Horrors album.
I wonder if Brett stamped his cuban heeled foot when Bowie eclipsed him with a return after 10 years? I bet he was a little bit put out
I was thinking the exact same thing!!!
