01 Gomez – Here Comes The Breeze ~ wilemena
I revisited this in RRSA Wind, after a long hiatus, and then it got stuck in my head. The song drifts pleasantly along at first for a bit and just as you’re thinking that’s all you’re getting, it cranks up a gear, kicking up a sexy little groove. It keeps on shifting up, and you find you’re on a bouncy thrill of a fairground ride. Then it stops. Awww! Can I have another go mister please?
02 Moonpools and Caterpillars – Hear ~ SweetHomeAlabama
Unwieldy name, unrelentingly catchy, caffeinated bouncy tune. (1995)
03 7 Horse – Low Fuel Drug Run ~ SpottedRichard
Nothing original here, but it’s fun.
04 Opa Dupa – Cpt. Due Inutili Parole ~ DebbyM
I don’t get to go on holiday for real, so I listen to foreign music and pretend. My Italian is non-existent, prego, but I believe the title’s something to do with useless words, which rather pleases me just now.
05 Marcia Griffiths – Childish Games (w Buju Banton) ~ Tincanman
In Jamaica they call it ragga – reggae made for the dance clubs – and it is a bit sultry so you might want to have a cool cloth handy. Whew, is it hot in here all of a sudden or is it just me?
06 The Mobiles- Drowning In Berlin ~ BethNoir
I have no idea whose idea it was to mix up the different bits of this song into one thing, but I’m glad they did. I love Anna Maria’s vocals, a little bit Lene Lovich, totally catchy, major earworm material for me.
Thanks to SpottedRichard for all her help in passing the worms over to my mucky paws. Also a big Thank You to everyone who contributed worms to this playlist or has sent them in to the wormbank. Please send me your juiciest worms, plus a line or two per song on how you got hooked to either earworm@tincanland.com or a wormhole near you. Thank you.

Yay! Earworms! Looking forward to this immensely. I will be back later after my appointment to enjoy listening to these.
Good job, wilemena. I am so looking forward to your stewardship.

Oh wow, this is why the Earworms are so great: I don’t think I’ve heard the Mobiles for thirty years, but that song is still as wonderful as ever.
Greetings, wilewormer!
I have a soft spot for Southport slackers Gomez and the lucky dip nature of Here Comes The Breeze is one of the reasons why.
Moonpools and Caterpillars isn’t my thing really.
Low Fuel Drug Run is great fun, although it rather undermines the January abstention message being punted everywhere at the moment.
Cpt. Due Inutili Parole: brilliant trumpets! And a time signature flip! Perhaps a bit of a novelty but fun all the same.
Childish Games (w Buju Banton): OK.
Drowning In Berlin: oh, yes I remember this, too! Strutting, big-haired, heavily warpainted pouty-ness. I can’t go through all that again; I gave my thigh-length shiny leather boots to Oxfam a while ago….
Which branch of Oxfam? I need thigh-length shiny leather boots
That’s OK Chris; I read a medical thingee that a month of abstinence being good for you is one of those urban myths. Any benefit us virtually negligible vs what you do the other 11 months.
Glad you enjoyed it Aba, I stumbled across it again recently and was very pleasantly surprised how fresh it sounded.
Gomez do get into a sexy little groove, I totally see what you mean. I like the hoarseness of his voice.
Moonpools and Caterpillars I’ve never heard of, but that is catchy.
Were 7Horse on the Spill top 3s of the year? Opa Dupa make me feel like I’m on holiday too!
It’s too cold to get hot, even with Marcia Griffiths, is warming though.
Yes, Beth. I’d slung this one at wilemena before I’d remembered about the festive 3s and put another track in for that. Love the album.
I really like them all!
Gomez. Fab. I think shane introduced me to them although I haven’t done much listening yet. (I hope his tax returns are going okay.) There’s a meatiness to their sound which really appeals to me and I like the country vibe and all things slidey.
Moonpools and Caterpillers – the name is enough. You almost don’t need to listen to the song, so the fact that it’s so good is a bonus. Nice post-80s noisy pop.
LFDR – It’s a bit of a Stones knock-off in places, which really isn’t permissible this many years later, is it? Or is it “in homage to”? It’s mine so nothing else to add.
Opa Dupa – Bonkers brass band with accompanying strange eeps and clicks goes mambo mad. Has Debby gone off her rocker?
It’s a trip. Great stuff.
Miss Marcia with Buju – I do like a bitta ragga and Mr Banton is definitely doing it for me, but Marcia, not quite so much. I’d like it much more without her vocals if that were possible – and yes, that would be a different song, of course.
Berlin – Eyeliner, Big Hair. Bish’s boots. Shiny clothes. Now. LOVE.
Lovely, wilemena. Thank you for putting such a good playlist together. Thanks all.
Gomez: Don’t know much by them other than “78 Stone Wobble” (which always struck me as a great name for a song – and was the main reason I bought the CD single). He does have a great voice. Gets a bit droney for my tastes before changing into something else entirely (and thereby rendering the song really rather interesting). Yeah, I quite like this – even if it does slightly smack of the (bish-)dreaded “jam”. I do rather like my musicians to have written their songs before trying to play them.
Moonpools and Caterpillars: Now who does that voice remind me of? It’s gonna bug me. But I like it. Especially in the gentler bits of the song.
7 Horse: Love that honky-tonk sound. I know what you mean by the Stones, SR, but it doesn’t have that squawking braggadocio that tends to put me off Mick ‘n’ chums (sorry Amy!). Like the treated vocal too. Favourite so far, I think.
Opa Dupa: Ooh, squelchy fun-ness! I like the rather teutonic vocal style in a language that really never sounds teutonic too. If that makes any sense. (It doesn’t.) I think this may now be my favourite so far. How quickly they change…
Marcia Griffiths: Well, obvs I’m conditioned to take against Buju because of his rather unsavoury views on the gayz (or has he since recanted?), but this is (equally obvs) marvellous. Bugger. (Insert own off-colour joke here.) I think I prefer Marcia’s strong woman bits though. Buju’s growliness is a bit too shouty for me. Windin’ and a-grindin’ in a club, I might feel different.
The Mobiles: Never heard of them, but feel like I ought to have done now. Especially as this sort of thing is right up my early 80s nostalgia-piqueing street. Ah, fairground noises and a serious chap intoning auf Deutsch… Einfach klasse!
Thanks all – and well done on your first list, wilemena! Great stuff.
You’d never heard of The Mobiles either? Spooky-link-between-record-collections hits again!
Yikes, this has got to be the worst curated earworms in history!
I’ve been waiting weeks to do that
What a relief.
Seriously, tx for pitching in wilemena. I know it will be a stellar period in the anals of earworms.
Arf!
Really happy for you for getting that off yer chest mister tincan
I’m relieved too. Dr said if I went to long the pressure would build up and it would blow
Hello peeps. I had a fun time putting this playlist together. Big fun indeed!
Just one thing to add. I already have some really ace worms, but I need more. more, MORE, of all shapes, sizes and variety. So come on laydees and gents . . . fill up that hole!!
I’ll endorse that the cupboard is very bare indeed. PLEASE can you all dig up some worms for the new wormwhisperer. Ta x
Wilhema the Wormwhipper?
No, the ones she’s got are in great shape. First class specimens. They are just, well, select … as in there should be a zoo breeding programme for them they are so rare.
If 7Horse haven’t listened to a lot of Alabama 3 they’ve kinda reinvented the wheel. Which in this case is a good thing.
Liked the jauntiness of Moonpools and Caterpillars, but Opa Cupa is the highlight got me this week. When I asked if it was hot in here, I must have been channelling this. I can just picture debbym tangoing back and forth across her livingroom with hoover in hand.
Get yer Latin dance styles right, oaf! I even said upthread it’s a bloody mambo. (Groan!)
Well at least you know I make my comments before I read what others have said.
*tries diversion as a tactic*
Freddy Mercury and Elmore James in one post? Have you no shame, you non-hoovering person?
(oh, and just in case you missed my other ‘Spill Mom’s correction, it is a mambo not a tango. I have reluctantlyBACKSPACEenjoyably watched Strictly Come Dancing when it fell on a spousal birthday or anniversary or my comp was doing an update, but quite frankly I can’t tell the difference. I should have guessed though really because if you dance with a hoover you wouldn’t want to get the cord…wait for it…tangoed.)
Think you’ve got me confused with Freddie Mecury there, Young Tin (’tis an easy thing to do). I don’t use a vac, I
…
….and that should, of course, be Freddie Mercury, and I completely mucked up the link to dust my broom
A game of two halves for me. The first 3 are kind of O,K but a bit blah.
Things improve with Opa Cupa which is super duper and I’m fond of a bit of Buju ( he did recant his homophobia, I believe) and the carnivalesque bit and Teutonics of the Mobiles won me over.
Hadn’t heard it before but then I was away with the fairies for most of the 80s.
Just a few comments, as now I’ve managed to scrape the kids down off the ceiling, after their first day back at school
Moonpools – Big girlie fun. Love it!
7horse. YES! Alabama 3 is what I heard straight off.
Opa Cupa – Enjoyed playing the Italian sultress (is that a word?) trying to sing along in Italian which I can’t quite pull off coz a) I don’t know any Italian words except ciao and bella, and b) It doesn’t quite have the same dulcet-ness with a thick Bolton accent. Brill stuff.
Marcia Griffiths v Buju Banton just made me lol, coz she’s so serious whereas he’s like a naughty kid taking absolutely no notice. A bit like a ragga Groucho Marx and Margaret Dumont thing doing on. Well, a bit anyway. I do love that one note horn all the way through – it’s just so erm . . . horny.
The Mobiles – HAD to go on as soon as I saw it. Took me waaaaay back. Great song.
Thanks all
Ooh, thanks Wilemena and wormers all. Liked all of these, top two being the crazy genius of Drowning In Berlin, and Marcia Griffiths v Buju Banton. If he is a homophobe with one part of his brain, he undermines himself by participating in steamy stuff like this. Do I win sample-spotting points for tracing their introduction back to here ?. (Couldn’t find the original soundtrack version but I like this one).
Gomez – As a band: love ‘em to death. But for me, the albums have deffo been a bit “…diminishing returns”. As this is from their debut, it still gets listened to a lot chez DsD. For those who like Ben Ottewell’s voice, he released a solo album (Shapes & Shadows) a little while back. In answer to your next question: don’t ask me, I missed it too.
* makes note to self ahead of visit to the library tomorrow *
The next three I didn’t know of at all, and enjoyed all of them. And yes, there’s definitely some Alabama3 influence in the 7Horse.
Marcia & Buju – Hmmm. Ragga is a genre I know so little of, that it’s difficult for me to separate the music from that whole homophobia argument Banton et al got themselves into. Handicaps it for me (unfairly, I admit, but still …), I’m afraid.
The Mobiles – Blimey! Yes, I remember that now. But not necessarily with any affection; it was about as likely to be found next to my record player way back then as a MancUtd match programme.
Will get to these, I promise. Just wanted to say “Hi” to wilemena and thanks for taking on the earworms. Mrs Maki and I will be sending some in.
enjoyed this little lot.
Bought Gomez’s early singles and liked this a lot – hadn’t even thought about them in years!
Liked the Marcia and BB tune a lot too and the Mobiles was ace – never heard of them before.
Cheers all!
Living on another planet to most ‘Spillers, as I do, I’d never heard of Gomez before…..apart from the scratchy bit, this is reminding me of Lindisfarne. Quite partial to a bit of Lindisfarne from time to time, I am….
I was expecting Moonpools and Caterpillars to be either hippies and/or twee, but they’re sounding more like a nineties pop band. OK, but not really debbymusik…(sorry)…
7 Horse – yeah! Really liked SR’s festive spill #1 too. SR, you wouldn’t be interested in sharing a house with me and AliM would you?…
Opa Dupa is my choice anyway – I love the brass on this and I love the interaction of the voices (I think they sound great together) and I love the feeling that a whole story’s being told in the song, even though I can’t understand a thing!
Marcia Griffiths is leaving me undecided, mainly because I don’t like the bloke’s voice. Her part is more like southern soul than what I’m used to hearing as ragga…
Goodness, I remember this one! No idea it was the Mobiles though – the old grey cells went into overdrive trying to work out who it was (thought of Hazel O’Connor first). Music as a time machine!
Thanks wilemena – hope you had fun putting this together!
2 stand outs this week for me were Moonpools and 7 Horse.
Not much time this week, so I’ll just say welcome to ‘worms Willi, I’m sure they’ll be safe in your hands and send a big thanks to SR for doing such a great job while in charge.
Gomez – Rather enjoyed this. Are they the chaps who won the Booker prize? Read about them at the time but never listened. Must investigate more.
Moonthings and Catapults – Great fun this. Started off like Wild Thing. Like the vocal and, like Bish, I can’t think who it reminds me of.
7 Horse – Not my usual flagon of mead but a nice bowl of bluesy gumbo.
Oopa Dupa – Now this is effing brilliant. Love it to pieces. Marvelous stuff.
Marcia Griffiths – I’m not much for Ragga but I do like this. Marcia more than Buju. I think he did make some kind of recantation for Boom Bye Bye but if Wiki is to be believed (sometimes a big if) he’s currently in jail in the USA for Drug and fire-arms offences.

The Mobiles – Oh I remember this. Lovely teutonic camp pop. Definitely an earworm.
Great start, Wilemena. It’s a splendid list.
Gomez are one of those bands that I have a vague feeling that I like, but can’t remember anythng specific and don’t actually own anything by. This was very nice indeed, but it also failed to lodge in my head.
Moonpools and Caterpillars, on the other hand, were insisting that need to be part of my life. They reminded me everso slightly of The Innocence Mission. I think it’s the voice.
7 Horse was certainly great fun! Alcohol-fuelled countryish getting-over-someone. I do hope he didn’t really drink that much whisk(e)y.
Opa Dupa was lovely to listen to, but as I’m one of those people who focus on the words, it wasn’t a lodger.
Marcia Griffiths has a lovely voice. Mr. Banton‘s interjections were less pleasing, I’m afraid.
I didn’t know The Mobiles track, but Sheddi identified it immediately. I, on the other hand, loved it immediately. Hints of Toyah in the vocals – but then, I imagine they were contemporary.
