“The band broke up because I couldn’t bear Rotten anymore because he was an embarrassment with his silly hats and his, like, shabby, dirty, nasty looking appearance”.
I asked for filthy, dirty songs…..The interpretation being up to you.
It was an interesting experiment – the starting blocks slipped the rude and lewd songs out – then other forms of dirt piled up in the nominations playlist. Some were too close to home (terminal illness) and other momentarily not appealing (I’m in a house with vomiting children).
Others were ‘just‘ about sex and didn’t feel dirty at all – they obviously weren’t doing it right… I still picked some of these tunes trying to create an interesting playlist as I went.
I will start with the oddity of The Intergalactic Laxative – Donovan
What these hippies were on is anyone’s guess – but dirty drugs spring to mind – random cosmic diapers.
Following on (a turn of phrase I shouldn’t use after that Donovan track) Al Stewart’s ‘In Brooklyn’ paints a picture of grubby, slightly dangerous New York in the late 1960s explained Mari – but it’s still open to interpretation as the “…..Her house was a dusty collection of rusty
Confusion with landings and tunnels
And leaning bookcases and spaces and faces and things ”
.. makes it sound beautiful to me… overriding the grimier later lines.
A beautifully evocative nomination though – so Mari wins.
Memphis Minnie – Dirty Mother For You gets the old timers nod – as you can just imagine the expressiveness of this sung live on stage (and the change in wording no doubt) .. backed up with Pearl and the Beard – Hot Volcano – not that I find the track dirty – I like an orgasmic interlude in almost everything I do – the playing on the selected video certainly expresses an enjoyable amount of filth .. and my dirty mind just reading anything and everything into the band name – don’t ask!
“Out through the night and the whispering breezes to the place where they keep the imaginary diseases” – Frank Zappa – Stinkfoot. Does what Zappa does.
I had intended a track about mining for a song about industry – but these words summed up the hardships perfectly:
dirty air, dirty laundry, dirty money, dirty rain
a dirty dark at daybreak burning the sugar cane
Sugar Cane by Mary Gauthier.
Arlo Guthrie with Alice’s Restaurant is a song about littering – it’s a long song about littering (and possible a few other themes thrown in for good measure) perfect in every sense… the song that is, NOT the draft.
The Blood – Sewer Brain
“pure punk Alice Cooper shock rock” according to the liner notes, the lyrics certainly wallow in the gutter although perhaps the most notable thing about the track is that it’s seems to be the hideously deformed offspring of a musical copulation between Oi and pomp rock. Brilliant! exclaims wyngatecarpenter, I couldn’t agree more:
“Some like watching movies, And some like smoking pot, We like shafting corpses and then watching the bastards rot, All that’s sacred goes down the drain, I ain’t ashamed, I got me a sewer brain” it’s the charm that does it for me.
Primus – My Name Is Mud
Skinny Puppy – Two Time Grime
“Smokey, smoker, smokey, smokeless, sorry”
I’ll add a filthy lucre track-
The Adventures Of Stevie V – Dirty Cash
Mad Doctor X – dirty old man
points out the theme of the year …
I will play out with a track that has vocals by Q-Tee (born Tatiana Mais) on Saint Etienne’s “Filthy” a b-side to “Only Love Can Break Your Heart”
At the time she recorded these songs she was 15 years old… it’s a sexy track – the newspapers would probably condemn it’s existence nowadays while printing invasive and inappropriate photos of teenagers on the following pages.
Filth and dirt has many forms – it’s in the mind of each and every one of us. Be it mild or messy.
It’s under our nails, in our lungs and settling on our skin.
Filth and dirt can be gooey and great AND totally disgusting.
But it’s also destroying the human race.
Happy new year..
