Greatly enjoying this already (obviously). tonnl’s selections are coming from a beautifully chilled out place this year. BeltwayBandit’s are wonderfully weird.
Beth – is this a new Anthony Reynolds? Croon-tastic!
Also loved GF’s exquisite version of Dimming of the Day, and had completely forgotten bishbosh’s pick, but remembered it instantly when the chorus came in – ace!
Thanks but I think I must give Tamurapan at least part of the credit.
She’s wonderful, actually, one of my favourite J-poppers. Started out as a “Myspace” releaser too.
A well spent couple of hours this evening. A really enjoyable set, with nothing I felt I had to skip. Some old friends (Hawley, His Bobness, Frida et al), but the real joy as ever is the undiscovered outfield stuff that piques your eardrums, and/or leaves you wanting to explore that artist more. Amongst all the riches it’s hard to single things out, but I was especially taken with the picks from caroleB (dreamy, with a lovely bit of steel pan or hang drum); spottedrichard’s drummy bit of afro beat; groovy jazz from Albahooky; mnemonic’s Dylan cover; and a strong close from DsD with an Allmanesque bit of southern fried, and a bit of bottleneck and honey from Shiv. EJD’s Hot Chip was super, if unexpected. And donds to barbryn’s comment re GF’s ‘Dimming of the day’. All in all a triumph again, and now looking forward to playing it all again…and to seeing the list of what I heard, tho’ it’s fun to listen without knowing (once)…
Ta Maki. Have just Googled that and you may well be right. Released early 2011, but hey-ho, my #2 is from last year as well.
It’s difficult getting the year right sometimes, isn’t it? I’ve got stuff I’ve listened to so much this year I thought it was older and sort of discounted it – Reina Republicana had better get another album out soon! Can’t believe I overlooked one of my favourite albums of this year!
Spill points to maki, here’s the picture.
Bit shocked at her taking a breath in the middle of ‘falling’…but hey, it’s got Jerry Douglas and Danny Thompson (no relation)…
Got a two-song Repeat going on now, with DotD and the following cracker from Richard Hawley. That’s yet another album I haven’t heard. I think I’m going to have to do a Spill post on 2012-LPs-I’ve-missed-and-want-to-know-if-I-should-track-’em-down.
Glad people seem to be enjoying Mr Hawley’s output. I’m planning a Richard Hawley Overspill post for the week after Christmas. Leave it with me…
By which I mean, of course, a Richard Hawley spillOVER post…
I’ve started listening and loving what I’m hearing – GHE, bish, toffeeboy, vanwolf….. and that’s just first listen, and I still need to revisit the 3s as well, which I will do in the morning while I’m baking cranberry orange loaf and Steenbeck’s Nutella cookies.
Just a reminder people to:
a) Do not play files from the dropbox folder.
b) COPY the files (or entire folder) to your music folder and play them from there.
*I’ve had to spend an hour this morning removing extraneous artwork and restoring some folders and files. No biggee, but not how I want to spend the rest of my holidays.
Managed to listen to the rest this morning – what great fun – bit much having nilpferd pandering to his perceived, ‘spill tastes, to start us off – with his 3 minute pop track – I think he should try harder to pick tunes he likes, rather than watering them down for the mass audience… two in a row now – if his top pick panders just as much – that’ll be 3 strikes and out, sir.
Can’t wait for the one’s – a brilliant ‘spill social experiment as ever.
(I’ve just cleared out a whole load of my MP3′s from the media store – hopefully giving enough room for the rest shoey)
Heh heh… I actually have watered down my number one for the mass audience, I doubt there’s anyone (over 35 at least) who won’t recognize it… I’ll just take my 3 strikes now then.
Sorry, tincanman – I’m sure I put it in the email but it must have got away. It’s Richard Thompson et al. (Or Richard Thompson and the cast of Cabaret Of Souls, but I thought that would be too long.)
Sorry, tincanman – that was kind of shorthand for ‘I really did buy the album – didn’t download it from anywhere dubious – and put it into my iTunes where I thought its formatting would follow it.’ Like most shorthand, it turned out more or less incomprehensible.
Oh, it’s just the ! mark in the wrong place – serves them right for having such a damn silly name.
Thought I’d miss sorted the festive spreadsheet & reallocated all the tunes – might have been interesting.
Oh shoey, I’ll never employ you as a proof reader – it’s not the missing exclamation mark, it’s the missing letter! Agreed, it’s a silly name and they’ve changed the way they write it themselves in the past.
Oh toss! Was planning to listen through these at work today and just realised I’ve left the house without my headphones. And before ya know it, the 1s will be up. I’m SOOO behind…
Some nice stuff here, particularly liked Goneforeign’s Alison Krause, bethnoir’s Anthony Reynolds and bishboshes 80s flashback.
Nearly liked Dylan, until he started to sing !
Right, found some headphones! That Andrew Bird track (ghe) is incredible. Have Amazon-ordered the parent album before the song is even over. (Please don’t tell me the rest of the album is rubbish.) Lovely voice on bethnoir’s chappie too – hard to believe this is a 2012 release (sounds like it’s been around forever). Not sold on the spoken-word bit though. Another burst of joyousness from pairubu and pals. Tin’s choice made me sit up and take notice. Carole’s is beautiful. Maki’s is setting the pulse racing. Fuel’s is pleasingly 80s (if a bit long). DsD’s aches gorgeously… Oh too many to comment on – all fab!
PS Aba’s (Susannah Hoffs, perchance?) cut out short on me, as did Gareth’s. Could just be my browser or something though.
“Another burst of joyousness from pairubu and pals.”
Bit of a head scratcher that one, I’m a right miserable old git in real life.
It’s like Victor Meldrew chosing the Birdie Song on Desert Island Discs !
You will not be disappointed, Bish, but you could do me a favour and cancel the Amazon order, and get it from Rough Trade or HMV, to help keep a hospital open! (ghe)
Japanther: I started listening to Mladic and at about 3mins in discovered that there was another 17 mins to go! ‘No way’ I said, I can’t give this one that long, but I continued and the farther we got, the more I appreciated it. What a wonderful group. There’s an extensive interview with them in the Guardian, everyone should read it and listen.
Thanks for that one, not what I expected. http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/oct/11/godspeed-you-black-emperor-interview
That’s so great GF- it’s not often that our tastes converge! – and thanks for sticking with the tune! I’ve been a fan of Godspeed… since the first copies of their debut LP started filtering through into UK record shops (my vinyl came with a Canadian 1 cent coin that had been crushed by a train – presumably on the tracks in the Guardian article photo!) and I had the pleasure of seeing them live earlier this year in Tokyo (thanks to Mnemonic’s connections and unrelenting kindness!) and they were simply incredible live – not just the music, but the backdrop photography and films and artwork are all part of the package too.
Pick anything from their back catalogue, it’s all great!
Gareth: I didn’t expect that one, the Spitfire is something I’ve long been interested in, I even have the volume that details the life of every Spitfire ever built in minute detail. Mr Mitchell would be very pleased, I assume that’s his voice that we hear. Thank you for this one plus thank you to PSB.
GF: I’m looking forward to listening to these properly, as I’ve just finished work for Christmas. The samples are taken from The First of the Few, so that’s Leslie Howard – who died in strange circumstances the year after the film was made – playing the part of RJ Mitchell.
Wow! I thought that the Threes were good, but the Twos were even better. Some amazing stuff there. GSY!BE is epic. Can’t wait to see if that one is under the tree tomorrow morning, I did ask for it.
Public Broadcast System has been a fave all year on BBC 6Music. Great stuff.
I love the Smoke Fairies too. I should have nominated the album for the Best Album award but I actually forgot it was only released this year. I have played it so much that it seems like a long-treasured friend.
Diana Krall is also worth a mention, I shall have to get the album in the New Year, I think.
I am gald that one of two people have enjoyed The XX. I will admit to being a bit obsessed with them at the moment. I just live the fragile atmospheric beauty of their music. It has so much emotional punch behind a deceptively simple facade.
Right, will need to find time for the Ones over the next few days.
I am glad that one or two people have enjoyed The XX. I will admit to being a bit obsessed with them at the moment. I just love the fragile atmospheric beauty of their music.
Interestingly I think this is the best of the 3 lists. Gawd knows why. Could be that it’s closest to my tastes or something predictable and boring like that. Very cool to see Rihanna in there, Alison Krauss, Andrew Bird and Diana Krall. Again many thanks to shoey and shane for compilation efforts – I spend most of Dec trying to build an end-of-year playlist and it’s a joy to listen to even more new stuff from you lot.
Thanks
Greatly enjoying this already (obviously). tonnl’s selections are coming from a beautifully chilled out place this year. BeltwayBandit’s are wonderfully weird.
and merry christmas to you all, tasteful and generous bunch that you are
lovely stuff
Loving arTEEsane’s … and GHE’s – is this Andrew Bird and his magic violin?
(May have to stop this commenting as I go along…)
*spoiler alert* – yep! (Really enjoyed seeing him a couple of times this year)
Beth – is this a new Anthony Reynolds? Croon-tastic!
Also loved GF’s exquisite version of Dimming of the Day, and had completely forgotten bishbosh’s pick, but remembered it instantly when the chorus came in – ace!
I think I’m listening one track back from you barbryn – loving the comments.
Where is everyone else?!
don’t know – waiting for the download option?
I might have to quit soon – got to finish some work – grrr.
yes it is, he has a compilation album out and this is a new track from it, 2 eps this year too, he’s been prolific, glad you liked it
Pairubu – your music sometimes has me reaching for the fast-forward button, and sometimes puts a massive grin on my face.
This is most definitely the latter.
Thanks but I think I must give Tamurapan at least part of the credit.
She’s wonderful, actually, one of my favourite J-poppers. Started out as a “Myspace” releaser too.
I’m here, but I’m tired, tipsy, and trying to multi-task. I have to say, some of these distractingly offbeat tunes are not helping my cause.

Gosh, I haven’t finished playing all the Threes yet! I shall copy everything from the Box for later.
I haven’t even STARTED the threes
I thought I’d done well listening to all of 3, but I’m very late with these, enjoying them so far though!
Just got to GF‘s Dimming Of The Day, and I’ve melted. Who is it? There’s no info attached to it in the ‘Box.
Sounds like Alison Krauss to me.
Ta Maki. Have just Googled that and you may well be right. Released early 2011, but hey-ho, my #2 is from last year as well.

I think the Sheffield rocker would be worth the hunt, knowing your predilections…
I think that could be a useful post for quite a few of us.
Glad people seem to be enjoying Mr Hawley’s output. I’m planning a Richard Hawley Overspill post for the week after Christmas. Leave it with me…

Wow, that’s a superlative Simple Twist of Fate too.
It is, isn’t it. I usually prefer the Dylan originals, but this one really grabbed me.
The new Magnetic North was on my list, and after hearing tonnl’s pick, it’s a deffo…
And lovin’ arteesane’s Madness meets the Vampire slayers!
On a second listen, that spottedrichard track has really got my goat – in a good way!
and the intro to beltway’s quirky anthem to beer hits the spot…
pretty stunning…I thought the last would be hard to top…y’all are good…
You enquired about dropbox. You need to email rr@tincanland.com about that.
Is the .mp3 file for mine screwed? Properties showing the file is only 862K and 36sec long.
should be ok now
Thoroughly enjoying listening to these. Not much I’d spend money on personally but it’s nice to hear what other folks like.
I like Simple Twist Of Fate as well…lots more goodies, need to listen again!

I feel dirty now. I think I’ll go and wallow for a bit.
I always wanted a boyfriend who wallows
Try Shoreditch, it has a herd of Hipposters that wallow – wallowing usually happens when they don’t get in first.
(it’s taken me a long time to construct that sentence anywhere close to clean)
Do we know yet the artist and title for the incompletely tagged ones:
GF, Maki, Mrs Maki, TFD
Sorry, tincanman – I’m sure I put it in the email but it must have got away. It’s Richard Thompson et al. (Or Richard Thompson and the cast of Cabaret Of Souls, but I thought that would be too long.)
Al who?
Don’t say I don’t give you anything, Anonymous
Al Anon? hic
The emails went to Shoey. I just downloaded the tracks from the post so that people could have them via DB if they preferred.
Sorry, tincanman – that was kind of shorthand for ‘I really did buy the album – didn’t download it from anywhere dubious – and put it into my iTunes where I thought its formatting would follow it.’ Like most shorthand, it turned out more or less incomprehensible.
Ditto, both of mine were tagged but here they are
Alison Krause, The dimming of the days.
Bonnie Rait, Not cause I want to.
Hi Tin:
Mrs Maki’s
Homenaje a Moraíto Chico by José Mercé and Diego del Morao
Mine
Seguirillas de La Verdad by Estrella Morente and Paco de Lucía
Yes, Shane – oh yes! that tune’s a killer!!
Sorry for delay. Here’s the playlist:

Nice typo there, shoey. I almost had Godspeed You! Black Emperor as one of mine but I was fairly sure someone else would pick it.

I’m all about the 80s flashbacks…
Lots of good things but totally mesmerised by Albahooky’s pick and reminded of Lemon Jelly by Gareth’s.

Oh yeah, good point. My bad…
another great list…..so much diversity all in a single calender year!
The Anthony Shake Shakir was the one that made the biggest impression, but so much great great music. Cheers all!
Question: is the Anthony Shake Shakir track called Anthony Shake Shakir? That’s how it’s arrived from dropbox.
I am glad that some people liked Anthony Reynolds, I was surprised how much I liked the Dylan track and I’ll report back when I’ve heard more.
Japanther: I started listening to Mladic and at about 3mins in discovered that there was another 17 mins to go! ‘No way’ I said, I can’t give this one that long, but I continued and the farther we got, the more I appreciated it. Apart from the Maki’s, all different picks in the two’s for me. The ones I really liked were from Severin, Japanther, Tin and Shiv.

Lots of really super music.
Don’t we all have such exquisite taste?
Bah, bloody typos.
It should read
