Lia Ices

1. Public Image Limited – This is PIL

I love the defiance of this. My best comparison is Eddie Murphy’s.”Because I’m Gumby, dammit” Still got a question? We’re PIL, dammit. Google it.

2: Screaming Lord Sutch And The Savages – Don’t You Just Know It ~ RockingMitch

Richie Blackmore played lead on this cover of a Huey ‘Piano’ Smith track. One of Blackmore’s finest moments in my book.

3: Young Heart Attack – Mouthful Of Love ~ DarceysDad

Calling all frogs, calling all frogs – this is your ten-second warning to mute your speakers for the next 3m 40s or so. REALLY potty-mouthed metallic mayhem I-N-C-O-M-I-N-N-N-G-G-G-G-!-!-!

4: The Steve Miller Band – Going Down To Mexico ~ Fintan

“53 Studebaker going for broke” ?  What’s that feel like? 4×4 A/C.  A suspension that takes 100 yards to even out between bumps.  80 feels like 150 mph.  And this song.  Steve & the boys drop the hammer straight off & don’t ease up.  Offered up specially for those only know The Joker.

5: Lia Ices – Little Marriage ~ HoshinoSakura

I sit in my balcony and listen to music as the sun goes down.  This is  my favourite “sun down”  track.

6: Tracey Browne – Kate Rusby ~ Zalamanda

A song about singing. And why not? It’s sort of about celebrity, too – but the gentle sort that the titular Kate Rusby and, indeed, Eddi Reader (who also features) enjoy. As might be imagined from the references, it’s mellow folky stuff, but very nicely done. Quite catchy, too.

  1. PIL: Surprisingly (to me) clean-sounding production, which makes the track more listenable than it might otherwise have been. Lovely instrumentation. Does sound a bit like Lydon’s making the ‘song’ bit up as he goes along, but nothing wrong with that really!

Screaming Lord Sutch: Yeah, pleasingly raucous. Player’s died for me again after track two – dunno what I’m doing to it!

Young Heart Attack: Bit too raucous for me, this one, but I can see the appeal.

Steve Miller: More pleasingly raw than the tracks of theirs/his I knew already. Not really my thing but nice sound.

Lia Ices: Most fitting soundwise for what I’m doing while listening (wrapping pressies to be sent abroad).

And now the player seems to have picked up again – most odd…

Tracey Browne: Very nice. Lovely soothing voice(s). Great end to the set – thanks all!

  2. What a mix! Is this a bit of a pre-Christmas cupboard-clearing exercise, SR? There is no way on this earth that selection should go together, but not only does it, but I love every single one of ‘em. Mine is the only one I own, though I’m sure I’ll have the PIL & the SMB somewhere in my memory bank.

Seriously, there isn’t anything less than an 8 out of 10 here. Going To Mexico is surely the song that fell off the From Dusk Till Dawn soundtrack at the last minute.

Tracey Browne‘s subject matter reminds me of Tom Cochrane’s Marianne And Lenny

Excellent way to soundtrack a Monday at my desk … though I still haven’t done any RR justis or answered Shane yet.

  3. Another eclectic mix!
P.I.L. I like this, even though I went off Lydon a bit when he started advertising ‘Country Life’ butter.
Young Heart Attack. – Love the energy here.
Steve Miller – Always like what he does. This is no exception.
Lia Ices – Yes, sundown music. Very nice.
Tracey Browne – What Bish said.
    Cheers all.

  4. Sorry that I haven’t been around over the weekend, and that I’m still snowed under and stressed so won’t be able to listen to these for a while. Just wanted to say that I’m still inviting nominations for the Spill Awards – album, film, tv show etc. of the year – not least because more nominations increases the possibility that there might be some overlap between different lists. Anything you can all do to advertise this would be greatly appreciated, and voting will then be able to start…

  5. Nice bit of blues rock spiced with a touh of psych in Going To Mexico Fintan

I hear why you want to chill to Little Marriage HoshinoSakura. A bit Frida Hyvonen.

I find British folk a bit insular and contrived Zalamanda, so I was more than a little apprehensive based on the title. But it is a lovely little song. Even though it is two adult characters, it sounds like two little girls playacting what they want to be when they grow up. I like that.

Will try and return to the other two when I’m not so mellow. (Note to singers/bands: If you put ‘Screaming’ in your name, I’m unlikely to buy your records. cc Jay Hawkins, Trees, Females, Cheetah Wheelies, Blue Messiahs, Lord Sutch et al)

  6. Have to agree with DSD. No way this should work but it does. Loved everything. In a bit of a pre-solstice funk myself and this worked wonders. Highlight was Young Heart Attack. Now that’s how to sluff off the barnacles. Lia Ices tilted me back towards the doldrums a bit only because it’s achingly beautiful but the optimism of Tracey Browne rescued it all. One question though. Who was that first band again? They’re ace.

  7. PIL – never would’ve guessed this as Tinny’s choice. Good though.
Screaming Lord Sutch – would’ve guessed this was Mitch’s. Great guitar as you say.
Young Heart Attack – struggled to hear many of the rude words, but sounded fun.
Steve Miller Band – great tune and the highlight this week for me, me’sen and not forgetting me wife’s ‘usband.
Lia Ices and Tracey Browne – lovely diminuendo to the playlist. SR, you’re good at putting the uptempo ones in the middle and ending the playlist with something chilled….

    Thanks all xx

  8. Pil- Never could get on with Rotten’s post pistols work.Fingernails on blackboard time for me
SLS- Bless, he wasn’t great at the vocals, was he. Nifty guitar as other’s have said.
    YHA- Nope.
SMB- Nope. I don’t really like “boys” music these days.
Lia Ices – I get “Knockin’ on Heaven’s door” crossed with St Winifred’s Choir. Too “laid back and girlie” for me this one.
Tracy Browne- Reminds me so much of another song but I can’t place it. Pleasant enough but wouldn’t buy it.

  9. As others have said, ‘shouldn’t work – but does’.
I’m a bit unsure about the PiL track. Seems like Lydon is just making it up as it goes along. Not bad though.
The Sutch track is good old rock and roll. What’s to not like.
The YHA sounded a bit like AC/DC. In the DsD noise mode. O.K.
Steve Miller was the stand out for me this week.
And rounding off with 2 nice pieces easy on the ears. Just right for end of the day listening.

  10. Where is everyone?

PIL – No, no and thrice no …

Screaming Lord Sutch – slightly better

    (Darcey’s) Dad Rock – OK

Lia Ices – quite like this one, unusual, thanks Sakura

Tracey Browne – I lurve you Kate – yeah, nice.

Hmm. Strange mix, after strangest leaving do ever, One person came, she left 3 months ago and is the only friend I have ever had who is blond. Bradford hotel bar drinking wine (I don’t do wine) very odd, like the playlist. But thanks, SR, very grateful and no offence intended.

    • Was it your leaving do ? If so, I hadn’t realised you were leaving the Bradford job, apologies if I should have known….

I can beat one person turning up to a leaving do. When I left Kirklees Council, I had a decent send off from my team at Batley (well, I was still their boss) and a nice lunch with my fellow team managers from Dewsbury, Dewsbury Hospital, Cleck, Mirfield… But my attempt to drag people to The Head Of Steam at Huddersfield Station on the Friday evening of a school holiday week, attracted zero people ! It was still nice to read The Guardian with a pint of ale, back when baby boy was but 2 months old, but I was off back to MummyP and the in-laws at Honley where we were staying the weekend fairly early in the evening…

  11. I loved this playlist!

(Bit relieved that i did too, after my sourpus take last week)

PiL – I actually do like a lot of their stuff, some even better than the Pistols. But surprisingly this one is for the trash heap for me this week. Started out fine, but became tedious after awhile. Glad Mitch brought up the obligatory butter ads thing so i didn’t have to – no mention of Mr. Lydon is complete without it.

The Screaming Lord – Great fun as always. Was waiting for a Ritchie solo and wasn’t disappointed.

Young Heart Attack – Ace, pick of the week for me. (Nice f*cking song title there, DsD. Jeebus.) Way too good a riff to park in hair metal ghetto. It totally rocks.

Steve Miller – Liked it just fine. He’s a weird one with me, never had any of his albums, but still, when he comes on the radio, i have no urge to change the station. (Except maybe the Eagle one).

Lia Ices – That was lovely. Definitely reminds me of someone else, maybe it will come to me after another listen.

Tracey Browne – Very nice. Liked it a bit less maybe than the Lia Ices, but still nice to listen to.

Thanks much to all, and Spotted Rich!

  12. Late to my own party…

PIL – I liked it. I did like the Sex Pistols, especially on Nationwide so it’s funny to think of him as a middle aged man who’s flogging dairy products, but I’ve never seen John Lydon in a butter ad. Surreal.

Screaming Lord Sutch – Yes, very good. Lyrically, just fine, but again, great instrumentation.

Young Heart Attack. Yes, lovely and brash. Excellent.

Steve Miller Band. Oh thank God it’s not T*e *oK*r. This is my favourite. A great song that redeems them from that shock horror.

Lia Ices – Lovely and calming.

    Tracy Browne – Ditto.

Glad the playlist hit the spot this week.

  13. Very late, sorry. Hello, I’m a shouty man! Not a fan of PIL. Screaming Lord Sutch is always a laugh, Young Heart Attack are full of vim and vigour aren’t they? I had to ignore who the band were to listen to Steve Miller Band, instantly thought I’d hate it, but it’s okay (faint praise, soz).

Lia Ices is gorgeous, really enjoyed this song. Tracy Browne has a lovely accompaniment, her voice is nice too, these are my two favourites this week.
