Back when I was 58

Back when I was two, in 1951

To celebrate my fifth anniversary on RR (November 9 2007 RRSA Illness) I thought I’d do a playlist of some songs/artists I’ve discovered since I’ve been listening…starting with a long life and a short life.

Back When I Was Four – Jeffery Lewis. Because it’s so funny
Leslie Anne Levine – the Decemberists. Because it’s so sad
A Horse In The Country – Cowboy Junkies. Because it’s me (without the horse)
Outfit – Drive-By Truckers. Because it’s good advice for anybody
The Longshot – Megson. Because of the story
She Talks To Angels – the Black Crowes. Because I’ve got a T shirt with them on the back
Go Your Own Way – Lissie. Because she opened for TP&TH last year
Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia) – Patrick Stump. Because it’s a constant earworm – damn you aip!
I Heard You Got Action – Pony Up! Because it restores the gender imbalance
Hard Times – Tumbleweed Wanderers. Because of the harmonies

Thanks, unknown person, steenbeck, Zalamanda, DsD, Shane, DsD again, chinhealer, angryirishpunk, Shane again, Fintan and everybody else!

  1. Happy Anniversary tfd. What an excellent playlist.

Jeffrey Lewis – one of my favourite RR discoveries too – via “Chelsea Hotel Oral Sex Song” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlRanftUqO4) (songs about other songs)

The Decemberists – I’ve been trying to get this one listed for years

Cowboy Junkies – another one I’ve nominated many times – one of their very best

DBTs – also an RR discovery for me. I’m sure there’s someone who mentions them quite often – I forget who…

Megson – ooh, good to hear this again – I heard it on Late Junction once, and it’s stayed with me. Great.

Black Crowes – haven’t heard this. They’re not really my thing, but this is good.

Lissie – I must have picked up some Lissie songs, including this one, from the ‘box, as she crops up on my shuffle from time to time. I’m still not really aware who she is, but I like what I’ve heard.

Patrick Stump – sorry TFP and AIP. I admire the sentiment and there’s some interesting stuff going on in the music, but I find the tune and, even more, the Autotune, irritating. I could all too easily imagine this being chosen as an X Factor winner’s song.

Pony Up! – oh yes, I remember this from a Shane playlist too.Like an indie-pop Grease.

Tumbleweed Warriors – not heard this before. Was enjoying it – and then on 3 minutes those Fleet Foxes harmonies kicked in, and took it to another level. Oh, and I like that sinking banjo at the end. Very good.

  2. Happy Anniversary TFD ! My 5th anniversary will be in January (‘I Am’ Songs) but I’ve come and gone whilst you’ve been dedicated and ever-present. Congratulations and thanks for all your contributions. Especially coming to my 50th in real life.

  3. Jeff Lewis is one of my fav artists (heard on the ‘spill from Me, Shoey, Blimpy at various times – I’ve seen him too many times but his comic books mixed with songs are a work of genius – tried to chat once. Two uncomfortable adults better at expressing themselves in drawings/songs was very ‘funny’ – to others not us – thankfully he found another sofa to crash on (because I’d only just moved to Norwich and the Ms. and son would have been slightly shocked to find an odd singer sleeping in the house)

    enjoying the playlist so far.

  4. Happy RRaniversary, TFD. Very enjoyable selection – thankyou. I particularly like the Black Crowes, Lissie and Tumbleweed Wanderers songs. I admire your memory as I rarely remember who introduces me to new music. Shame on me.
