Have Yourself A Wormy Little Christmas

Oo-er.  I’ve received my first Christmas earworms.  Three from an excited little Christmas Elf who can’t wait.

  1. Are we going to do just one Christmas Earworms set?
  2. Do we want to run for the whole month?
  3. Do we want to to do extended playlist(s) of eight or more songs?
  4. If people send in a selection of say, three, do we want to send them out anonymously to an anonymous selector to pick  one?

If we start at the beginning of December, we’ll need to decide very soon and  you’ll have to start sending the songs in pronto. Last one to comment buys the eggnog.

Ideas please!

  1. Honestly ! What kind of idiot sends Christmas earworms in November ?
I’d say go for just one set, maybe two at a push and simply pick the “best” 10 or so.
One can have too much of a good thing.

  2. My vote would be for one extended list of all Xmas earworms sent in – maybe a week or so before Xmas. And then a week or two off regular earworms.

    This is because:

    1) I can’t bear how long Xmas is stretched out for (bah humbug, etc).

    2) There tends to be lots of other stuff to listen to over the ‘festive period’ (eg, ‘Spillers threes, twos and ones of the year), so ‘ordinary’ earworms can get a bit lost.

  3. I think one list, possibly split into two if it seems cumbersome. Monday 17 would look like the best date – Xmas Eve would get lost, Dec 10 too early. (Then again, who says it has to be a Monday?) Very happy for you to make the final song selection.

  4. Sorry……………This is the first Bah-Humbug post.

I hate, with a pasion, the time of year when radio stations start playing Christmas songs. The songs are the same, year after year. They are – in my opinion – some of the worst type of music on the planet. They have mostly been recorded to satisfy some section of a contract or to cash in on the Christmas season.
    Some of the worst……………………

Bruce Springstein, McCartney (or Wings), Wizard and Slade.

Looks like I’ll be taking a time out over this period.

    • I agree wholeheartedly about the same old shit that’s spewed out at us year in year out from every radio station and retail outlet in the Western world. But Xmas earworms have traditionally been, er, not traditional Xmas songs. They’ve been less well-known, quirkier, more interesting, occasionally more beautiful. You might find yourself surprised…

      • Thanks bish, I will obviously keep looking in on ‘Earworms’ and would love to pick up some stuff that I haven’t heard before. [ That's one of the joys of the place]. But I prefer to leave any proper musical connection to the day in question and not have things thrust into my ears from October/November. And it does not have to be of a religious definition.

  5. Does UK radio go all-Christmas music with the same intensity that American radio does?

Here’s the current list of all-Christmas stations. http://100000watts.com/specials.asp
Currently at 23 and we’re still in the first week of November. Locally WMJJ hasn’t taken the annual plunge yet, but they did do an all-Christmas music weekend back in July.

I’d love the idea of one all-Christmas Worms list – I might dig up a few myself – if only because I’m a supporter of the *idea* of Christmas music as a means of breaking down musical barriers. It’s the only time of year when a singing cowboy, a crooner, a choir, and a jazz trio can all occupy the same radio stopset like they can occupy an RR A-List.

  6. I think Maki and Bish speak wisely from experience – no problem with a nice long list that we can dip into as we get time over the season, but no problem either if SR, you want to tighten it up a bit eg. to 1 per person. If the playlist is carefully constructed to flow, or segmented in some way, that’s great; but if it’s just a weird and wonderful collection of songs, that’s great too.

  7. Apologies for going off-topic, but I wanted to take the opportunity to send my condolences and best wishes to SR. Am steering clear of the current debate over on the Mothership for several reasons.

  8. Good to keep the traditions going – although 5 years in, this one gets a little trickier each year. Am sure the collective will surprise us with something new & it never hurts to repeat some of the old stocking stuffers.

My preference would be one post and one tune per person (if someone has a bunch – they can always do a separate post to supplement).

Very sorry to hear your news on the Mothership. It’s humbling that in a time like this you think about stuff like Christmas tunes for us, continue the worm herding, etc. Thanks & condolences.

  9. Thanks for the condolences. I forgot to respond. Everything is in a bit of a whirl to be honest! I really appreciate everybody’s kind messages. I really appreciate your goodness and compassionate hearts. Many blessings upon you all xxxx
