1: The Butthole Surfers – White, Dumb, Ugly and Poor ~
A bit of a theme song for me this one. From their 1983 demo it’s, by their standards, a bit tame.
2: Billy Jenkins And The Fun Horns Of Berlin – (Not) Close To You ~
From the 1996 album East And West Now Wear The Same Vest, this for me combines beauty and the blues with political pertinence and some fantastic avant-garde thrashing. From a time when the reunification honeymoon was well and truly over, and the new Germany was indeed a state of ambivalence, what better way to portray it musically than this monumental Bacharach – David cover ? Billy Jenkins is not only a great British jazzer, he is also accredited by the British Humanist Association as a humanist funeral celebrant. And he went to school with Billy Idol.
3: Kim Weston – Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While) ~
Here’s a real earworm; so much so that my sig. oth. gives me The Look when I start to sing it. Not obscure, not clever-clever, maybe even a bit naff, but a performance of immense proportions, IMHO. Often covered, but how the Doobies, the Isleys or Phil Collins (!) thought they could better it I’ll never know.
4: Edgar ‘Jones’ Jones – Oh Man, That’s Some Shit! ~
An infuriatingly catchy number from a strangely “not known as well as he should be” super talent – it takes its lead from classic highly repetitive Gospel chants, but is perhaps more of a hymn of praise to some particularly good Mary Jane…
5: Handsome Hank And The Lonesome Boys – Video Killed The Radio Star ~
Switzerland’s most famous Country and Western band. This is a fine example of their “Alpine Blue Ridge” style.
6: Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears – Get Yo Shit ~
No explanation necessary.

Er…
1. pairubu 2. beltwaybandit 3. daddypig 4. wilemena 5. williamsbach 6. spottedrichard
… or not…
Buttholes: Yeah, this is fun. I dunno that I’d pick it out to listen to but it’s an enjoyable little ditty. Shane maybe?
Billy Jenkins: Ooh, it’s like a cross between Lambchop and Tom Waits. DaddyPig for the justi alone.
Kim Weston: Know the song and the singer but not together. Quite like it but not wowed. No idea who sent it in – BeltwayBandit? (But Lambi could be right with 2 and 3 the other way round.)
Jones the Jones: Sounds like it should be widely sampled – not quite enough of a ‘song’ there to draw me in. Was gonna go for SpottedRichard but I’m gonna plump for Pairubu.
Handsome Hank: You can’t keep a good song down, can you? I like how the ‘old-fashioned’ instrumentation points up how quaint the lyrics now sound. Turns it into a folk song almost. Williamsbach?
Black Joe: Favourite this week. The song that Edgar doesn’t quite become. Or something. This could be SpottedRichard. Or not.
1 shoey or me
2 BELTWAYBANDIT is eloquent enough to have written that.
3 DP – is known for a singalong
4 Pairubu – “not known as well as he should be” is the turn of phase he’d use (I think)
5 WILLIAMSBACH is our Swiss correspondent
6 Wilemena – too economical with words for her – heehee – but I’ll run with it.
Cheeky buggar!
This is hard, cos I don’t feel I know you all well enough to discern your musical tastes, but I ‘ll give it a go for the fun of it.
1. Shane. Ooh! Like this.
2. Pairubu. Cos it’s weird and wonderful. Lovely piano and sax.
3. Beltway or DaddyPig. Love Kim, and can imagine either of them singing this.
4. SpottedRichard. Cos she has used the word ‘super’ a few times before
5. Williamsbach. Cos I’m stumped and probably know him the least.
6. Me or Shoey. Cos because. (Shane you’re forgiven, cos of my birthday playlist).
btw. Enjoyed em all. Especially mine
1. Sakura. Closet Buttholes fan.
2. Shoegazer
3.Wilemena
4.Daddypig
5. Williamsbach
6. Shane
1 – I think this is Daddypig. I am sure he is a secret punkster ! ! !
2 – This is definitely Mr P ! ! ! It even sounds like him ! ! !
3 – This is mine – it is an Old Hipster favourite ! ! !
4 – I think this is Wilemena ! ! ! It I think this is the type of track she would definitely like ! ! !
5 – I think this is Williamsbach.
6 – Beltwaybandit ? ? ? Ummm . . . .I do not know ! ! !
It is a great playlist ! ! !
Thank you so much for making it for us. I had a lot of fun trying to think who they could be and the ttracks are all great ! ! !
Trying to post without looking which means pretending not see, the always intriguing, Sakurasan’s post right above me.
I really enjoyed all the songs this week. Even the zonky Carpenters cover. Kim Weston tops the heap. Another voice silenced way too young. Black Joe Lewis was probably next , but only by a hair. They’re all fun.
I’m shite at this personal guessing but here goes.
1. Pairubu
2. BeltwayBandit
3. Wilemena
4. Daddypig
5. Williamsbach
6. Shoegazer
Nice playlist and another one for saving. So who’s who ????????
1) Pairubu
2) Spotty
3) DaddyPig
4) Willi
5) Shane
6) Belty.
One out of 6 ain’t good…………………..
Ooh, nice tunes and a detective-style quiz !
THE BUTTHOLE SURFERS – good fun, but hard to hazard a guess when someone says that “white, dumb, ugly and poor” is their theme tune ! Risk of offence from a wrong guess is high. I’ll have to guess Shane on a two-out-of-four-plus-two-more-for-self-deprecation basis.
BILLY JENKINS – lovely stuff, as Beltway would say. In fact a jazzy J’accuse for Beltway for digging out this one.
KIM WESTON – fantastic, a singer gone too soon as Fintan says. I’d never have guessed this one, which seems to have been revealed already, unless it’s a complex decoy strategy.
EDGAR JONES – I think Williamsbach chose this, only on the basis that it has that gospel thing going on, as did his A-listing for Bruce’s Mary, Don’t You Weep. Really good again, fantastic earworm week we have here.
HANDSOME HANK – toe-tapping and tuneful, an unlikely cover that works surprisingly well. I’ll guess that SpottedRichard saved this in her own wormbank, but no clear rationale for this guess.
BLACK JOE LEWIS – great tune, funky and sweary, must be Wilemena !
Thank you SpottedRichard and mystery people.
1 – Not heard much of their stuff before. This sounded a bit like the Dead Kennedys. Quite liked it. Pairubu?
2) I’ve got that album “If I Were a Carpenter” with punky and grungey cover versions of the Carpenters’ songs. So I’m surprised I didn’t like this very much. Anyway I think this is also Pairubu.
3 – Lovely stuff. Really enjoyed this. Probably Pairubu.
4 – What a strange recording. Very catchy indeed. Can’t get it out of my head. Almost certainly Pairubu.
5 – This I love. Brilliant interpretation. Pairubu?
6 – Eh? Don’t get this. Probably not Pairubu (could be though).
I’m crap at this so apologies if I offend anyone:
1. Wilemena
2. Pairubu
3. Beltway Bandit
4. Williamsbach
5. Spotted Richard
6. Shoey
retires back under tin helmet …
1 wilemena, because she often uses a self-deprecating style
2 Now, who goes on a bit but is erudite with it? BeltwayBandit, that’s who.
3 I’ll join the majority and say DaddyPig
4 Shoey, because he’s very eclectic
5 Much too obvious, so not williamsbach at all. This is my second favourite, though I never liked the original. SpottedRichard, as she’s partial to a fiddle.
6 Pairubu, because he is short and sweet. Or concise even. This is my favourite..
Hmmm….
1. Buttholes – Shoey or Pairubu. Butt Rockin’ post punk. I might have posted this one if I’d known it.
2. BJ – Pairubu. Definitely. Or Sakura if she didn’t write the blurb. Sweet. I might have posted this one if I’d known it.
3. Kim Weston – Beltway. Great voice. I might have posted this one if I’d known it.
4. Jones Jones – Wilemina. Lots of fun; good Welsh name. I might have posted this one if I’d known it.
5. Handsome Hank – Daddypig. Do I hear ‘Wideo’? Puts ‘em in the German part. Zurich, maybe? I might have posted this one if I’d known it.
6. Black Joe Lewis – Shane. Cool guitar line, nonchalant lyrics. I might have posted this one if I’d known it.
The above are complete guesses. At least one of them will be wrong….
If I’m not mistaken [Disclaimer: I might be mistaken], Beltway and Edgar ‘Jones’ Jones hail from the same neighbourhood. Would this make him more or less inclined to describe him as “not known as well as he should be”? Could be a clue, either way, and it’s the best I’ve got seeing as I’ve not had a chance to listen to the playlist yet. Although I’ll put DaddyPig down for No.2.
Heyyyy! So good to see you around, it’s been ages…
It is wonderful to have such wonderful rare company this last few weeks, and now May1366. Great stuff.
It’s a chilly morning in Preston, had to get up at half 5 to get ready and drive here from Liverpool for my 9am seminar with a bunch of students who’ll spend the first hour waking up and the next two craving breakfast, and – SR, lambre – you’ve just saved me £1.50 on the sausage sarnie I was going to get to warm me up, because you’ve jsut gone and done that.
Yeah, I’m resolving to eke out time to swing by here more often, might even venture back towards RR under the guruship of the factory committee, but baby steps in case I wake the work beast….
Woohoo!
)))
Nearly everybody named me in the list, and I was linked with 4 of the 6. Only Bish, who has given me leeway with wordage as a former Curator, and May guessed it. Flattering to have my words mistaken for Beltway, who I hope is not too upset…
It was the reference to the German ‘reunification honeymoon’ that tipped me off, knowing of your time astride the Brandenburg Gate.
Aha ! Absolutely no direct causal connection between those things, but you obviously sense deeper connections…
I reveal myself to be white, dumb, ugly and poor !
see DaddyPig it couldn’t be me:
White? – I’m from Celt stock who lives in Norfolk – I’m translucent (I drink beer for the help in achieving colour in my cheeks – oh – until the sun shines for exactly 6 minutes – then I go beetroot. At no point would anyone describe me as white.
DumB? – I’m dyslexic (as you know), b’s and d’s are the most troublesome letters – bumd – would fit me better. (stop tittering at the back)
Ugly? – got no argument there… I rely on beauty in my record collection (and that’s a matter for bedate* (*I think that means debate)
Poor? – I try to avoid people – that doesn’t pay well in the job market – but it makes me happy, that in turn makes me content – ergo; my life is monetarily poor – but contentedly rich.
No offence taken**
** depending on what “(Shane on a) two-out-of-four-plus-two-more-for-self-deprecation basis”… you were guessing at. (adds Sakura exclamation mark overdose™© !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for comic effect)
I had you down as a po’ white boy creative, so I’m sorry for my misjudgement there. But would never say you were dumb, bumd or ugly !
heehee – you’re correct really… (I also have and love the song)
By the By – I was being interviewed and photographed by the local paper today – about ‘B-Boy’s Brainasaurus’ – it was quite a shock having to speak to people … you know, like ‘weird, real live people’ – not all you ‘friendly folk’ I’ve made up in my imagination. Shocker I tell you.
I’m promoting a craft thing that happens on Saturday – so was trying the human angle to get a bigger write-up. Sadly it’s the same day as the anti- racist (counter demo) in Norwich that I want to be huge too – even though I have to work.
Shall we just stick with mudb and lugy…. to be on the safe side?
Hi Shane. Awesome about Brainasaurus. I haven’t spoken to Arthur yet, btw… good luck with the craft fair.
That’s exciting, do let us have any interesting links or cuttings ?
cheers SR – hope you are keeping ok – tuff time… I’m sure Arthur had a blast.
will do DP.
Your Guru shirt should have been printed up this week – but the bloody supplier didn’t include the blank shirt with my order. grrrr.
It’ll be hot off the press tuesday morning.
Many thanks, I’m looking forward to it lots !
Hi All
No body guessed my pick ! ! !
I nominated Handsome Hank and The Lonesome Boys.
I thought Beth might have guessed because some time ago we spoke about country bands cover versions of songs from different genres and I actually posted the video of this song for her. ( phew ! ! ! )
It was fun to think about it and once again many thanks SR ! ! !
Sakura, it’s because if your outrageous bluff at “owning up” to Kim Weston. I thought we were allowed to deny our own picks, but not to lay false claim to others, but I underestimated your tactical talents !
Teehee, Only May1366 spotted my neighbourly link to Edgar Jones Jones (great to see you again by the way) – that was indeed my choice (I also use a picture of him for my avatar which is a hit of a clue) – much fun, it’s been a bit like being dead and hearing people say nice things about you, thanks all!
Hattrick! Williamsbach, May1366 and BB. And of course, Lambre and Wile of late. Feasting on the new blood….
So will you reveal the complete answers and award points, or do we wait for the others to come forward. So far we have:
1. Pairubu
2. Me
3…..
4. Beltway
5. Sakura
6…….
Results post up now you impatient man
