Or, Long Ago And Far Away, or even Such was the tale, Socrates, which Critias heard from Solon...
Anyway, songs that tell stories or which are some way inspired by myths and legends. These are my contribution to the lovely West Country Social that was held last weekend Chez Abahachi.
I think that most people should be able to work out who is playing what, but let us treat it as a small game, ‘Spill points available, for getting all the artists and tracks right. I shall exempt the opening and closing selections.
I was listening to this last night just before I went to sleep but was too tired to comment. Here’s what I thought.
2. Don’t know
3. Don’t know
4 Can and the Coastliners – Genesis
5 Wondrous Stories – Yes
6 Sandy Denny/Fairport Convention .. not sure – She Moved Through The Fair
7 No Quarter – Led Zeppelin
8 Sandy Denny/Fairport Convention again – Tam Lin
9 Don’t know – El Paso
10 The Battle of Evermore – Led Zeppelin
11 Don’t know
12 Don’t know – King Crimson?
13 Don’t know
1. Theme from Star Wars film -John Williams
2. something by Van Der Graff Generator?
3. I’m sure Ali is right with Camel, I like it but didn’t know it.
4. Never heard it before, but it doesn’t surprise me that it’s Genesis
5. I have heard one Yes album, this wasn’t on it, it’s better than I imagined
6. Ah lovely, She Moved Thro’ the Fair, is it Trees version? Zala would know as she is the authority on this song.
Back in a minute, Scalextric is interferreing with listening pleasure!
7. One of my all time favourite Led Zep songs, I love the video with JPJ riding through the graveyards at night and the beautifully understated vocal by Percy, wish I’d seen them do it live in the 70s.
8. Fairport doing Tam Lin.
9. Is that the Grateful Dead doing El Paso?
10. Oh I like this version, lovely clear sound, I always think the album version sounds a bit muffled. Who is that with the tall cool one? I’m sure it’s not Sandy sounds like Alison Krauss maybe?
11. I don’t have a scooby. Bet it was from the mid 70s and the band had nice artwork on the album cover.
12. Quite syrupy strings, love the bass, no idea, but I look forward to finding out.
13. I’m not that famiilar with Wishbone Ash which Ali said, the twin guitar sounds like what I know of them.
A really atmospheric selection, Carole, I enjoyed the game too.
Nothing to add to others’ guesses, except to say that the Dead played that particular El Paso on October 13th, 1980, at the Warfield Theater, San Francisco, and it appears on the bonus disc of Reckoning.
And it’s the Liege and Lief version of Tam Lin.
Hi all, here as promised are the actual tracks, bookended by music from Star Wars;
2. – Van Der Graaf Generator: The Emperor In His War Room
3. – Camel: Nimrodel
4. – Genesis: Can-Utility and the Coastliners
5. – Yes: Wondrous Stories
6. – Trees: She Moves Through the Fair
7. – Led Zeppelin: No Quarter
8. – Steeleye Span: Tam Lin
9. – The Grateful Dead – El Paso
10. – Robert Plant and Kristina Donohue/Fairports: Battle of Evermore
11. – Steve Hackett: Ace Of Wands
12. – King Crimson: In The Wake Of Poseidon
13. – Wishbone Ash: Throw Down the Sword
The version of Battle Of Evermore is from the Fairports “Live At Cropredy 2008″ album and Kristina Donohue is guitarist Jerry Donohue’s daughter.
The Steve Hackett is from “The Voyage Of The Acolyte” and, yes, it has a nice cover.
Hang on, I got this wrong, not Steeleye Span at all, it was Fairport Convention. I copied the listing from Ali’s post and edited it, but missed that incorrect answer. It should be this;
2. – Van Der Graaf Generator: The Emperor In His War Room
3. – Camel: Nimrodel
4. – Genesis: Can-Utility and the Coastliners
5. – Yes: Wondrous Stories
6. – Trees: She Moves Through the Fair
7. – Led Zeppelin: No Quarter
8. – Fairport Convention: Tam Lin
9. – The Grateful Dead – El Paso
10. – Robert Plant and Kristina Donohue/Fairports: Battle of Evermore
11. – Steve Hackett: Ace Of Wands
12. – King Crimson: In The Wake Of Poseidon
13. – Wishbone Ash: Throw Down the Sword
I thought it was Fairport, I haven’t heard a Steeleye Span version of the song. I think I got 5 or 6? Oh it was King Crimson? I really should listen to them more.
Well, that is radically different isn’t it? It’s so dissimilar to the Fairport one I think I’ll consider them as separate songs. Both are very appealing.
In my search to make a good playlist for my west country social CD, I have ended up with 3 different versions of Wille O’ Winsbury, but I still don’t think I’ve found the best one. That is the beauty of folk songs, I suppose.
I like the Richard Thompson one a lot.
Fancy me not recognizing Steve Hackett. The rest I got wrong don’t surprise me in the least. Did do a bit of hedging there admittedly.
Finally made it here. Is it possible that i could get burnt out on the Stones? How i’ve missed your playlists Carole, a healthy dose of prog, folk, and Led Zep is the perfect antidote. That Trees was absolutely gorgeous – I love the song but don’t know them. The other version i’ve heard that uses “he” instead of “she” is Sinead.
So i should be ready to enjoy Fuel’s and Shane’s Stones playlists by tomorrow now!
Ahh, Carole! Thank you – finally, I might win some Spill points! What a great playlist.
2. – don’t know
3. – Camel: Nimrodel

5. – Yes: Wondrous Stories
6. – (Sandy Denney?) She Moves Through the Fair
7. – Led Zeppelin: No Quarter
8. – Steeleye Span:Tam Lin
9. – Don’t know
10. – Led Zeppelin: Battle of Evermore
11. – Gryphon (??)
12. – Don’t know
13. – Wishbone Ash – Throw Down the Sword
Think I’ve found my niche, thank you …

Track 2 sounds like David Tibet/Current 93 but I don’t know this track
Ah, I’ve just found out what it is on Google so it’s not David Tibet
Excellent playlist!

I shall post the complete track listing tomorrow, some good guesses so far, some correct, others close.
Aha. I don’t know my Fairports from my Steeleyes.

Enjoyed this enormously; recognised Genesis (but not the song), Steeleye Span and Led Zep, and that’s it.
I claim 6.5 Spill points … most ever for me… and it WAS Steeleye Span after all. Thanks Carole!

Silly me. Apologies all round.
Flumps!
Kristina Donohue is a new name for me, I’ll look out for her.
I thought it was Fairport, I haven’t heard a Steeleye Span version of the song. I think I got 5 or 6? Oh it was King Crimson? I really should listen to them more.
The Steeleye version is quite a lot different:
Tam Lin

Lovely playlist Carole. More please!
