The BishBosh Birthday Bash!

Happy Birthday Bishbosh! We all hope you have a wonderful day and have put this little playlist together to celebrate. Hope you like it.

“Happy Birthday, young ‘un! Here’s something from the Drugstore that, hopefully, sits in that small overlapping bit of our musical Venn diagram. Groove On!”

AliM

Bish, I’m not sure if you’ll like the song but I think you’ll appreciate the feel-good sentiment. Have a birthday bash, Bish!

Abahachi

There are, musically speaking, two ways of dealing with hitting 40: one is to wallow in nostalgia and regret for lost youth, the other is to live in the moment with abandon and dance naked to the Rite of Spring. Or, with the Pet Shop Boys, you can do both at once.

Mnemonic

Knowing your love of a pretty tune, here is Kevin Tihista, downhearted but hoping that things get better. Remember, life begins at forty!

TFD

He Was Really Saying Something by the Velvelettes. Because you just never know.

Mitch

Happy birthday – hope you like this.

Sakura

Here is Happy Birthday by Love Psychedelico. It uses a mixture of English and Japanese but I think there is enough English to understand the feeling ! ! !

SpottedRichard

I thought this 80s classic would be a good song choice for you, bishbosh, even though it doesn’t mention birthdays. I hope you have a wonderful day and lots of your favourite kind of cake.

DaddyPig

I don’t suppose this will be new to you, but my detailed research tells me it was hovering around the top thirty singles in the UK when you were born. A fine month in a fine year, Happy Birthday bishbosh !

The Makis

Dear Bish. Have a lovely day. Here’s a song from Yasmin Levy we hope you will like. She tells us we have to live to pay the price, to earn our happiness but that it’s worth it. Live long and be very happy! (Mrs Maki says at any price !)

Carole

I’ve been thinking about a good tune and Big Star were always great for hooky and hummable tunes, so here is a gentle one that I love. I hope you do too, Bish.
Anyway, Happy 40th Bishbosh, you mere stripling!

DsD

A joyous blast of defiance against the ageing process.

If all the people in the world camped out in your back garden,
Would you write and tell the King, or would you grab a tent and join ‘em?

40′s just a number, Bish, and not anywhere near as significant/scary as the doomongers had us believe.

Hi junior, have a great day. Click on the link and enjoy.

  1. Happy Birthday dearest Bish ! ! !

I do hope you have a lovely day and the sun shines in the UK for you ! ! !

Thank you Maki for making the play list ! ! !

  2. rats – too busy working/ avoiding work – to have got off my lazy arse to send in a song.

    Happy double 20 Bishbosh….

hope these make up for it – (from one of my Birthday CD) – the Band is Sunday Driver (UK) made with the help of Arts Council England and Kickstarter – I’ll link you to:

Sunday Driver – Concubine WaltzDrink and kiss where ever you are

    and
    Rats
so you can see what they look like live.

  3. Happy Birthday Bish!!! Hope you have fun stuff planned. I am afeared that i still can’t come up with a tune for you.

    But wait a minute –

I don’t know if this is your sort of thing. But a friend made me an Ani DiFranco playlist recently, and i think this song is just lovely. So a birthday bouquet for you -

    Ani Difranco – This Bouquet

  4. Aw, thanks all! I’m just about to bugger off to the library to crack on with this bloody dissertation, but this has cheered me up no end! Will have a listen later – thank you thank you thank you! xx

  5. Happy Birthday, Bishbosh.

I was late in sending off a tune, due to a severe cock-up in my online calendar (I inadvertently set all my outstanding tasks to completed!)

I would have added Big Star’s Watch The Sunrise but I’ve missed the boat now.

  6. Have a wonderful day bishbosh – good that it’s on a weekend (so stop working!). I have been distracted by work in the run up to the opening of the cable car next week – sorry not to have contributed to Maki’s playlist. But here’s my cheery choice for you…(ghe)
The Valley – KD Lang on the Max Sessions
    (added to playlist – Maki)

  7. Hey Bishbosh – I think I missed the memo, but a Happy Birthday from me as one of the few people round here who can still say “40? Wow, that’s old!” (for a little while, anyway).

Here’s a mashup that’s been making me happy for the last couple of days – I know you love one of these songs at least.

(And a belated happy birthday to Maki, Beth and anyone else I’ve missed over the last couple of weeks)

  8. Sorry I missed your birthday bish. A friend has had visitors over for the last 3 days and we’ve been out and about so I haven’t been on the ‘Spill. I hope you had a great day and enjoyed the playlist.

  9. Lovely Sunday morning playlist and good fun as always to see our different responses. Actually Shane’s choice of Concubine Waltz isn’t very Sunday morning, unless they’re gracefully negotiating their way round each other in the kitchen to get to the toaster. There’s some nice tuneful 80s / 90s pop here which I don’t listen to much but is bright and refreshing here. The Velvettes I hadn’t heard for ages, it sounds frivolous and poppy but the storyline is as street-level as any punk rock. Maybe. Good work Maki and thanks.

Bish, try and avoid too much rambling on about stuff as you progress through your 5th decade. It’s too late for me but if I can help others… Anyway… Happy Birthday !

  10. Happy Birthday Bish…..sorry I’m late to this and apologies for my failure to get a choon to Maki…..I was racking my brains to get the perfect one and all of a sudden it was Spill time!!

Hope you had a great day and managed to extract yourself from the studies for a few hours (I’m in essay mode at the moment too!) to enjoy it

  11. Right, finally got to this… only to find my internet connection going blimmin’ dodgy again. Hope to get through the playlist before it dies!

Aw, great stuff, everyone! I’m a little too hungover to be particularly coherent about individual choices right now but I’m enjoying the tunes washing over me as I lie pathetically on the sofa, feeling vaguely guilty about the dissertation…

Thanks everyone – and maki for putting it all together! xx
