Earworms 18 June 2012

Don’t turn away
(You’re gonna make it, baby)

1: Pink Cadillac – Bruce Sprigsteen ~Treefrogdemon

Ever since I heard about Elvis giving away pink Cadillacs to people I have wanted one (and in fact told Matt that when he became a rock star I would prefer one to the traditional house in Weybridge). This was an outtake from the Born In The USA sessions and came out as the B side of Dancing In The Dark. According to Wikipedia the car in question is a veiled pudendal reference; I may say this had never occurred to me and I have loved the song for years and listened to it many, many times. Hmm. Plush velvet seats.

2: Along Came Jones – The Coasters ~ RockingMitch

From 1959, I think the lyrics on this represent one of composers Leiber & Stoller’s finest moments. Brilliant!

3: Happy Virus – Hundreds ~ Zalamanda

Ridiculously upbeat song about the banality of caffeine-fuelled urban life.

4: Miguel Bose – Morena Mia ~ MrsMaki

A lesson in how to write a song about sex without ever actually mentioning it. The imagery and metaphor are as delicate as they are spicy. A sexy song without a hint of smuttiness.

5: Moulty – The Barbarians ~ SpottedRichard

A wacky “triumph over adversity” song, but it’s absolutely true – Moulty is Victor Moulton of The Barbarians and he sang the song.

6: One Vision – Queen ~ DaveSheddi

I would like to say a big Thank You to everyone who is sending in their lovely worms. I had already scheduled playlists through to 2 July, but after that, I am hoping that if you see my songs on the playlist it will only be occasionally for continuity purposes. Please see that as an incentive to keep ‘em coming!

PLEASE!  Send your juiciest worms plus a line or two per song on how you got hooked: to either earworm@tincanland.com or a wormhole near you. Thank you.

  1. Well done SR. Another good set (and not just because you’ve included one of mine!)
Bruce Springsteen. Yeah! The Boss! There are 2 other “Cadillac” songs, by Bo Diddley & Vince Taylor which are also great. My fave this week.
Hundreds – Yes, nice fun sound.
Miguel Rose. Again, very nice to listen to whilst eatins beigels and drinking coffee.
The Barbarians. Garage rockers. Liked it.
Queen. Sorry, Dave. My allergy to royalty extends to the band of that name.

    • There’s also Long White Cadillac by Dwight Yoakam.

If anyone fancies calling out a theme and soliciting tunes for a future earworm sesh in the comments, don’t be shy (I’ve got 4th July and the Olympics sort of covered mind), but it’s kind of fun to do a shout-out theme once in a while? Yes or no?

      • Hope have the right words to say this without pissing everybody off, but it has a bit same-old, same-old most weeks because it’s the same small group of regulars sending in similar stuff.

That’s not zala or Spotted’s fault – you gotta work with what you’re sent. And obviously people are going to send in what they know and love, so no reason for submitters to take offence.

We just need more and more varied contributors. Maybe we should all tap one person? Any other ideas?

      • Hey, I got Sheddi to send a couple in, Tinny! (And not even on my own watch.) So… he didn’t quite manage any words to go with the songs, but we’re working on that.

      • I’ve had some quite brilliant earworms over the last couple of weeks from all corners of the globe (almost). I am thrilled with them and future playlists (particularly July and August) are going to be hot stuff.

I see where you are coming from though, Tinny. So, if anyone’s got any suggestions, let’s have them.

Nobody (so far) seems to be too put out that DaveSheddi didn’t have any blurb on his song today, so I think he’s free and clear :-) , Zala.

      • Awesome news Spotted.

(I think re Sheddi that Queen is one of those Marmite bands, and whether you love me or hate em it doesn’t need to be said again. How’s that Dave? Yeah, yer welcome)

    • Absoluteky agree Rockingmitch, it is not the first time I encourage people to send more special songs but, if only a few people contribute to the earworms the selection can be repetitive and it does not help to the original idea of earworms.

So PLEASE, remember important songs in your life to enable SpottedRichard make different selections every week.

Great stuff this week anyway ! Thanks

  2. Love love love Along Came Jones. Always have. Always will.

Happy Virus: Yes, gimme some of what she’s having!

Morena Mia: Hey, there’s coffee in this one too…very laid-back sound. Liked the guitar.

Moulty: oh, this is lots of fun!

One Vision: don’t think I’d ever heard this before. Hmm, but it hasn’t really got a tune, has it? (Probably that’s why!)

  3. Veiled pudenda?! Heavens. Not sure this is gonna be a week for me. (No, not because of that! Just up to my neck in dissertation panic.) Will be back to comment in a week or two. Keep up the good work, SR!

  4. This week’s tunes are a treat. I am so pleased to have some TFD, Mitch,DaveSheddi and Sra Maki songs to listen to.

Pink Cadillac. A very solid Brucey rock classic. Great song.

Along Came Jones. Witty, accomplished and hard to beat. Excellent. My pick this week, but they were all very good.

Hundreds. Another witty one. Very, very enjoyable.

Morena Mia – (Different, very likeable. Fabulous voice.

One Vision – Classic Queen. Great song.

(BTW There are ‘Spill points to be won this week.)

  5. Pink Cadillac – Surprised myself by liking this. I am not a fan of Springsteen as a rule. I wish he sounded like this more often.
Not sure about the inuendo. Bronski Beat had a song called “Cadillac Car” and I’m sure they didn’t mean anything by it.

Along Came Jones – It took me a while to erase the memory of The Osmonds performing this song on The Andy Williams Show (Little Jimmy played Jones – my, how we laughed). It is a wonderful song though and I do love The Coasters.

Happy Virus – Bit whimsical but not really my kind of thing. Nor is coffee since you ask. Sorry.

Morena Mia – OK but didn’t make a great impact on me the first time around. Started to get into it after a second listen so I thiink it may be a bit of a grower..

Moulty – Although I knew of the song, I’d never actually heard it before. Brilliant stuff. Love it.

One vision – I like about half a dozen Queen songs and this isn’t one of them, I’m afraid.

  6. A splendid list, SR!

I have known “Pink Cadillac” for what seems like ages. There was Natalie Cole’s hit cover somewhen in the 80s, and then I discovered Bruce’s original. It’s one of my favourite Springsteen songs.

“Along Came Jones” is a brilliant story-song. It just sounds like the audio equivalent of one of those old films it describes.

“Happy Virus” is my ‘worm. I found it lurking on a Word magazine freebie CD and chased up a copy of its parent album. This is an obvious standout, but the rest of the album is pretty good, too. The band are German, I think.

“Morena Mia” has a lovely stacatto thing going on with the voice. I think that’s what it is. Anyway, I think it’s great; I just took too long to find it a home.

“Moulty” is a curious one. Veering from spoken word to the distorted cousin of “Wild Thing”… I’m not quite sure. I like the bits where they wig out, but the talky bits don’t do it for me.

“One Vision”. I’m quite partial to a bit of Queen, but I’m not sure I’d have picked this one as a particular favourite. Has anyone mentioned fried chicken yet?

  7. Been sadly missing out on my earworms listens but had time this am & it felt like old friends week. The Boss, The Coasters & The Barbarians have long been in my playlists. Pink Cadillac has a retro sound I always thought Bruce coulda explored more ( there’s a Sea Cruise vibe to Clarence’s sax I just love there). Always loved the coasters & Along Came Jones was one of those songs my buddies & I did (or tried to) on the playground. Arguments over who got to shout the title line of course & I don’t think we ever got the lyrics right. Great fun. Moulty is so sappy you almost want to turn it off but the harmonica is phenomenal and they sorta channel a Righteous Brothers riff and well , somehow it all works. Happy Virus – a deffo earworm and soon to find a place in a playlist. Morena Mia – There was a somewhat atrocious Craig David song ( that I liked none the less ) called 7 Days that this reminds me of musically. I’m hoping that lyrically it surpasses Mr. David & fortunately my Spanish isn’t good enough to contrast. Really liked it. The Queen? Sorry. Always left me flat & still does.

    • I felt for sure you were going to pick up the Spill points on this, Fintan. Or Mitch. Neither of you have hovered over the picture and seen the question, or indeed seem to know the connection between the Band in the picture and Moulty.

      • Wow SR. I really should pay more attention. I recognized the Hawks straight away but just thought it random (kinda like my mind). Never would have guessed they were the backing for Moulty without looking it up though. Always learning something round here. Thanks for the tip. Teach me not to hover.

      • Most weeks I’ll try and dredge up a factoid on one of the songs if I can. I’ve kind of got in the habit of doing that on RR and I find it fun. If it’s a good one, I’ll offer up Spill points. You did recognise Levon Helms and the Hawks so you get 5 Spill Points for that. Whodathunkit, though?

  8. Bruce Springsteen I like (TFD converted me – a bit like British gas but less painful). Happy Virus I like too, but reminds me of Suzanne Vega and Marlene on the Wall, which I will now be singing for the next week. Or coughing, as I’m not well (thanks for the honey TFD, am taking it by spoon as you suggested!) I quite like 7 Days by Craig David (sad, I know, Fintan) but am not picking it up from Mrs Maki’s contribution.

    Thanks every one.

    • Sorry you’re not well – let us know whether you think the honey has any effect! (Of course you could only tell, really, if there were two of you.)
