  1. This is a really great play list Shoey. How do you select them? Are they around a theme or are they some tracks you like this month?

    • Yep, it’s my highlights of what came out during the month (or thereabouts). Try to include some folks we haven’t mentioned before along with the usual suspects.

  2. Had my sons 7 year birthday party today – so probably wont make it to the end of this tonight. Saltillo caught my ear so far (of those I don’t know).. will listen to the rest tomorrow … looking forward to the Hukkelberg.

picked up these (not sure if they were released this month) – pretty enjoyable add ons to your selection… haven’t properly delved into all of them yet.

Prinzhorn Dance School – Clay Class (2012)
Lazarus and the Plane Crash – Horseplay (2012)
    Cursive – I Am Gemini (2012)
School Of Seven Bells – Ghostory (2012)
    Soko – I Thought I Was an Alien (2012)
Speech Debelle – Freedom Of Speech (2012)

    • Speech made the long list, but didn’t enjoy it as much as the 1st one. Thanks for the Lazarus – particularly enjoyed the gravelly bluesy ones. The other vocal style wasn’t bad either, but it did make the album a little schizophrenic.

  3. Pulled in for a rare check-in to a Shoey playlist by the number of artists whose names I already know. Facilitated by being on a rare house–otherwise-empty “office” day, and few phone calls to make.

Sinead & Barry went down well.
New Age Steppers a bit odd, but I have a problem with German as a lyric language.
Is that really the Phenomenal Handclap Band with the G.Moroder/D.Summer electro vibe thing going on?! Blimey. Not my bag at all.

    … tbc

  4. … contd.

Saltillo [is that "Salt-ill-oh" or "Salt-ee-yo", btw?] pleasantly bonkers: broke a pen bashing the desk to the drums on that.
I see Apollo 440 have still got their usual (in my limited experience, anyway) ‘turn-everything-up-to-11′ thing going on. Bit too rave for me on this song.

  5. Sleigh Bells: oh yeah! That’s getting played to the girls later. May be too loud for Darce, but Jess’ll love it.
A Place To Bury Strangers kinda passed me by; Disappears reminded me of The Fall; not a good thing in my case!

  6. Ooh. The Shearwater is my favourite so far. It’s Chris-Isaak-meets-The-Mission: I LOVE IT.

    Have to replay this …

    • Ha! Chris Isaak frinting the Mission sums up Shearwater pretty perfectly. Plenty more where this came from, along with related outfit Okkervil River. Recall that Snadfrod was a big fan of both.

  7. DsMam home now, and constantly interrupting, so haven’t managed to form any opinion of Broderick, Soap&Skin, Hanne&Erik yet. Giving up ’til this eve.

    Cheers, Mr.Gazer.

  8. Shoey, I left the list playing despite the interruptions, and restarted it when it finished from Shearwater onwards. That portion of the playlist is a thing of exquisite beauty, though I haven’t yet had a chance to differentiate who’s who.

Excellent stuff. Has any of the list been previously ‘Boxed, ‘Spilled, or written about elsewhere? I obviously need to do some exploring up the Amazon!

    • Not planning to box, but you can always snag what you want with Google reader. If not, just shoot me an e-mail.

  9. That was a list of two halves for me (which may well have been the intention).

Nothing that I’d look to buy in the first set, though Sleighbells were fun and I didn’t mind Disappears’ resemblance to The Fall.

But from Shearwater onwards it was lovely. Lambchop and Tindersticks are already on the shopping list (presumably there are some vocals elsewhere on the album) and Soap&Skin was the best (yes, and probably the only) thing I’ve heard from Austria since Johann Strauss (I googled – she sounds interesting…). But Perfumed Genius was the really stand-out for me – two minutes of perfection – off to seek out more immediately.

    • Agreed, barbryn. It would appear – according to Amazon – that the artist’s stage name is actually Perfume Genius (no end -d. Not being picky, Shoey, just sayin’ is all), and that this is his second album. What I’ve read seems to make him a kinda Seattle version of Mark Hollis, and I want to hear more too.

I daren’t play this list any more; I cocked up my broadband deal on changeover and streaming very quickly pushes me over my new limit.

    • @Barbryn, Lambchop & Tindersticks are stripped of vocals as a service for those who don’t like the vocal stylings of their respective frontman. Found the rest of the latest Tindersticks a little disappointing, but the Lambchop is ace.

@DsD. Mr Genius was featured on the old AOTM. I liked the first album better – not as produced. Think you’ll find he’s a little more fey than Mr. Hollis.

      Cheers, for listening.

      • Sod the download limits!

Yeah, Shoey I see what you mean. Listening to samples of 1st album on Amazon, and streaming new LP via barbryn‘s proffered link (Cheers, Barney), I’d say more like the hinterland between Antony Hegarty and Bon Iver.

Like it, though, so thanks for the [second] heads-up.
