Thanks tfd, I hadn’t heard. I fell in love with “Mythical Kings and Iguanas” as a teenager – it was one of the few non-Beatles-Dylan-Simon LPs my parents owned, but it wasn’t played in our hearing as children because of the single, but prominent, f-word (“One was an artist, one drove a truck / One would make love, while the other would fuck”).
She was a wonderful lyricist, and it always surprised me that she wasn’t more widely known.
Dory Previn introduced ‘yada yada’ to me long before Seinfeld did. I enjoyed her music ,and as a contemporary of Joni, found her to be a nice acerbic counterbablance.
Mythical Kings… was played a lot after hours in one shared house I lived in in the 80s, and it’s got good associations for me. I was having a rubbish year of failing job interviews and being single whilst mates moving onwards and upwards, and the occasional nights out with house-mates and friends and all back to ours were good.
I’m sure Dory herself would approve of introspection and over-sharing in her memory !
glad you did

A lovely song which may only passingly refer to the late Dory Previn but does so in glowing terms:
I caught the end of Jarvis Cocker paying tribute to Dory on his 6Music show today. He played this song as well as “20 Mile Zone”. Gorgeous.
Off topic, but ToffeeBoy – as an Evertonian and Camera Obscura fan, did you ever catch this interview with Pat Nevin, an exceptional footballer on so many levels: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/aug/26/small-talk-pat-nevin
Mythical Kings and Iguanas is the only one of her albums I know.
To be honest, I often found her music very depressing although I agree she was a good lyricist.
Well, she did have mental health problems so it’s not surprising…

…fine singer-songwriter, RIP…
…86, didn’t know she was that old, oh my, how time flies…
@Toffeeboy: thanks for that Camera Obscura song!
Time flies indeed, TonNL! I had no idea she was that old either.

My ex introduced me to her music…ironic really as he then did the same thing to me as Andre Previn did to her!
Can’t believe your ex ran off with Mia Farrow, that’s amazing !
Nope – with him it was a case of “beware of young girls a whole lot younger than twenty-and-four”!
I had no idea either. RIP.
