I recently stumbled across Lotte Kestner’s wonderful covers album from last year, Stolen. Lotte Kestner is the solo project of Anna-Lynne Williams, lead singer of Seattle dream-folk-shoegazers Trespassers William, and the album is a collection of understatedly gorgeous versions of songs by the likes of Bon Iver, The National and Vic Chestnut. It also has this version of New Order’s “True Faith”, which made me realise I own more New Order covers than originals:
I do love “Blue Monday”, but I’d never really realised there was a proper song underneath it until I heard Hannah Peel’s version:
Nouvelle Vague do that one too, but they also do an utterly loveable “Bizarre Love Triangle”:
Anyone got any more?
New Order (possibly incorporating Joy Division and side projects) would be another good subject for a ‘SpillOVERview… Anyone?
Never liked New Order or their ilk, probably because they weren’t my era, but I like all these, especially Hannah Peel’s Blue Monday. I’d be hard-pressed o tell you what the original was like, though, so it sounds new to me.
There’s this from Flunk:
Joy Division only did two albums & the expanded versions include the singles & best ep tracks. Kind of annoyed that New Order have reformed without Hooky (although it’s nice to see Gillian back). Anyway, their last effort was as crappy as the Bad Lieutenant stuff so wouldn’t expect much.
this month MOJO will come with a CD (remember them?) of various bands covering the entire Power Corruption and Lies album.
I didn’t know that! Seems I’m unconsciously channelling the grown-up monthly music magazine zeitgeist.
I liked that (don’t know the original) but it sounded kind of like New Order…
The worst New Order cover ever has to be George Michael’s desecration of “True Faith”, which I shan’t post here because it’s so unlistenable. I had been thinking of doing a post on New Order offshoot bands (Electronic, The Other Two, Revenge, Monaco, Bad Lieutenant) but haven’t got round to it – clearly!
If you google ‘Joy Division covers’ the huge list that appears includes a cover of Atmosphere by Divine Comedy and Transmission by Doves both of which would probably be interesting but neither are on youtube unfortunately. To be honest though any cover of a Joy Division song is likely to be disappointing and bordering on sacrilegous as far as I’m concerned.
