I just discovered this picture of Mudcrutch in 1971 and thought I would post it for your delight – and for a serious medical purpose! I specially like the way most of the colour has drained away leaving the red leaves matching TP’s jacket…It’s a scan from a book that I didn’t want to flatten too much, so that’s why the drummer, Randall Marsh, on the left, isn’t showing up very well (sorry, Randall). Then there’s Mike Campbell and then a teeny Tom Leadon just showing in the gap, and then TP.
Notice TP’s posture – it’s very poor. It’s even worse than it looks in fact because the photo is crooked. This may be because of TP’s teeth: as you may know, his top teeth are at the wrong angle. And did you know that your teeth can affect your posture? Well, they can. I already knew this because my nephew’s orthodontist told my sister so, back when Ruairidh was a teenager and having his braces fitted. (If you don’t believe me, just google teeth and posture.) But I’d forgotten, till I was looking at this picture and thinking “cripes, I don’t know how TP can even stand up at that angle.”
So now, as well as worrying about his smoking, I also have to worry about TP’s long-term musculo-skeletal problems. It’s a hard life. For those of you with difficult teeth, or whose children have difficult teeth – think on.
You can’t tell from a photo what the music is, but it might have been this:
High School Confidential. This is the 2008 Mudcrutch, not the 1971 version. Same people though – plus Benmont Tench on keyboards.

You get me mildly stressed because I can’t find either little Tom (how small is he?) or the drummer at all in the pic, then wham! dental horrors. Thank heavens for the great song!
Tom L’s face is just above Mike’s wrist. You can see his guitar further down – I’m not saying what bit of Mike that’s next to. And Randall is just to the left of his cymbal.
I did warn you on RR that it was teeth-related.
Wow ! ! ! I never knew that teeth affected posture ! ! !
My dad paid a lot of money on dentists for me and my sister when we are young – so Dad – thank you for the teeth and the posture ! ! !
The song is great also ! ! !
I remembered your saying that on Facebook.
LOL!!! I am proud of my smile!!!
Lovely pic, but I do find the name ‘Mudcrutch’ most unpalatable.
They wanted a name that was down and dirty…
That’ll do it!
…and they each now deny being the one who thought of it.
Nope – still can’t see him, but having expanded my screen as much as I can, there is a ghostly disembodied head hovering in the trees near those gravestones at the back. Spooky!
See Mike, he’s the tall one – he’s wearing a check shirt. See his hand, which is where you’d think it would be – he’s playing the guitar. Just above his hand, level with his wrist, is Tom Leadon’s face.
That spooky face, if face it is, is probably the ghost of one of the legion of rhythm guitarists they tried out that were rubbish.
Well, the disembodied head must be Tom, but he seems far off. I’ve found Randall too – but there’s a person in a white shirt just beyond TP with just a dark head (hair only) showing but with his hand on the mike on top of the mike stand. Is that person known? Or am I asking too many questions? (Sorry!)
Maybe there are legion legions of rubbish rhythm guitarists.
He IS far off…maybe that’s significant. I don’t think that other one is a person. There wouldn’t have been anyone else on that side – Benmont would have been on the other side, if he’d been there. But he was at college in New Orleans in those days and only sat in occasionally.
