Venomous Beings!!! The MFF 24 Hour Challenge!!!

Shocking Pink Dragon Centipede

Poisonous Pink Dragon Millipede

This is post for all the Spillers missing their MFF!!!

It should have appeared by magic at midnight UK time and if you are reading this then I suppose so that it must have worked!!!

As you know, I come from a sub tropical island so we learn very young about venomous things that crawl or wiggle or fly or swim or even just sit waiting to be touched so they can inject their poison in to you!!!

There is actually a lot of them!!! Snakes, spiders, insects, amphibians, jelly fish, Centipede and millipedes, plants and even some fish and sea plants!!!  So I think you should be able to think of some good tracks to honour our scary friends!!!

The cute little thing you see in photo is a Pink Dragon Millipede – but Watch Out!!!  This little monster shoots cyanide at people that annoy it!!!

So for this 24 hour challenge we are looking for beings with venom.

They do not need to be fatal (most poisons are designed to kill animals much smaller than a human) but they do need to have a sting in tail, mouth, or thorn.  Plants that are only poisonous if you eat them are offside!!!  (I have been studying sporting metaphors recently!!!)

Here is my nomination to start you off – Queen Bee by Maki Goto – As sweet as honey but definitely a sting in the tail!!!

So Ready  -  Steady -  GO!!!

  1. I had a many legged creature theme lined up for one of these night so GOOD choice:

    Black Spider - Sunday Driver
    Spiderbite - Beats Antique

and Tarantula – Pendulum Vs. Fresh Feat. Tenor Fly & Spyda (but I got that A listed last week, so it doesn’t count)

will do for now – but I must sleep – I have a rough day coming up.

  2. I’m quite fond of snakes, although I’m careful about not getting too close to them in the wild. Here is my favourite snake song

    RL Burnside – Snake Drive

Apparently it’s his son doing the psychedelic guitar playing.

    • No!! You would not want to be bitten by her!!!

But I do like this song, but I hate the video, I think she looks really unattractive in it!!! I do not know what they did, but I suspect manipulation of the images to make her look thin or something but her face seems to be wrong proportions….

  3. I have a few Black Widow songs, but some of them I wouldn’t want Sakura to listen to.

Addis Black Widow by Mulatku Astatke and the Heliocentrics is good though.

As is Army Ants by Tom Waits.

King Snakes aren’t venemous, so I won’t be nominating that song.

  4. One from my youth: Not a great song but it fits well because its about a boy trying to impress a girl by picking up icky things.
I don’t like spiders and snakes
and that ain’t what it takes to something

    by Jim Stafford

  5. Shriekback – Tranquil Vermin

Don’t think they ever released this. Have a copy ripped from their website. Most dangerous creatures just want to be left alone.

  6. Hi All there are some great tracks!!!

I am really sorry I was late with the posting!!!

I screwed up the time zone thing and so I set it to be published automatically, but at the wrong time.

When I checked at midnight UK time of course it was not there and so I had to manually publish from work when I arrived!!! I am sorry for that!!! I hope we did not miss too many people because of the late start!!!

  7. mnemosene

I really like RL Burnside – Snake Drive!!! It is a reall blues number but also quite different and exciting I think so!!!

  8. Excellent thread choice … shame I’m out all day.

But I’ll enable comments with a song I own thanks either to Shoey or Shane, I think:

Hellwood – Spider In The Bed

Can’t find it on youtube and don’t have time to search for an internet audio hit.

    Back this eve ……..

    • I am so sorry TFD – I got confused with the time difference when I set post to be at a certain time calculated wrong and I was on my way to work when I saw it was not there on my iPhone and then I had to wait to get to work before I could do it manually.

I am such a clutz some times!!!

Only one more session of demonstration and I can leave and get back to see here again and RR!!!

      I am so impatient!!!

  9. Fabulous millipedes Sakura – any chance you could post me some in a matchbox – there’s a lot of slugs in my garden that would get the jitters and clear off if they saw one of those wriggling towards them!

Some early morning gutsy rawwwk anyone? The Black Crowes will surely oblige…

Come on my sweet little thing
What new things can you show me today
    I got one question
    I believe it’s subjective
What is a wasp without her sting?

  10. Fabulous song by Michelle Shocked, Black Widow: not on YouTube, but it is on Spotify now:

Is it the lonelines of the night
That makes you reach out and bite
    The unawakened flesh?
    You lady in distress,
    You poor suffering Murderess…

    • I actually thought this would be the first nomination!!! It is a classic track…but King Snakes are not poisonous!!!

  11. And here’s another from way back: Bobbie Gentry & Donovan sing Bugs LIVE from her BBC television series. I didn’t know BG had a BBC series!

    here are the lyrics:

Got a pollywog in your water ‘(p–g may be a bit non-pc these days)
    Tadpole in the moonshine vat
An’ granddaddy-long-leg climbing on the screen
You better watch, you’re gonna squash him flat
    Boll weevils in your cotton
And dirt-dauber busy building a nest
The red wasp’s gonna swoop down and get ya child
Won’t give you a minutes rest
    (she’s talkin ’bout)
Bugs! Everywhere you look there’s another kind of bug
Makes you want to get a club and clout’em
Yes everybody’s talking bout the worrysome bugs
But ain’t nobody doing nothing about ‘em

Shooing the flies away from the table
    Hiding under the quilting bed
The chiggers running wild in the blackberry bush
Yellow jackets swarmin’ round your head
They’re coming to get your watermelon
Black ants marching in a long line
They’re lurking in the leaves of the strawberry patch
And climbing up the tomato vine
    (she gonna tell you about)
    Bugs!
Bugs! Everywhere you look there’s another type of bug
But if ya live in the delta ya got ‘em
Here’s a sure fire way to pass the time of day
Fold you up a newspaper and swat ‘em

Hey look its me with the DDT
    Umm hmm, umm hmm
Aint they a mess, them worrysome pests
    Umm hmm, umm umm hmm

  12. Funnily enough my favourite song this week is Poison by Bottlejob but I don’t think it’s about poisonous animals
Fallen Angels – Vipers In The Dark – not the rock band but the Vibrators/Hanoi Rocks “supergroup” from 1983 with this glam punk ballad.
Punishment Of Luxury – Jellyfish – post-punk/new wave prog silliness.

    • Unfortunately I can not get Spotify as I am not in UK or Europe, but i found it on youtube.

I really enjoyed it very much!!!

The millipede is quite dangerous actually, they produce a lot of cyanide and you can even smell the almond smell from them people say so. Luckily I have never seen one, they are from Thailand actually, not Okinawa.

      • Oh sorry – and nice one; I couldn’t find it last time I looked on YouTube… and cool! I just discovered Gloss Drop recently and can’t get enough of it.

        I love millipedes : )

    • I really love his voice!! It sounds like the voice of a ghost or demon or something!!! I found it quite scarry actually!!!

  13. Hi Sakura

Sorry to arrive late to this post, Maki and I have been really busy this week commencing new business after the vacation period in Spain.
Your idea has been very original and I have enjoyed some of the tracks included in the post. Some of them completely unkown to me.
I have remembered this one that made the group Radio Futura very famous in the 80′s.
Veneno en la piell (Poison on your skin)

    More ideas like this!!

    • It is a great dance track!!! It has a really nice beat and I like the guitars!!!

I could not stop my feet tapping!!!

      • Sorry I pressed post too early!!!

I am so pleased you liked the post and spent the time to comment!!

        Thank you so much!!!

      • It’s sweet, isn’t it? It’s from a poem by AA Milne, who wrote the Winnie-the-Pooh books – I was thinking you wouldn’t have heard of them, but of course they’ve been Disneyfied, so perhaps you have. (I do NOT approve of the Disney versions.) I loved the books as a child and still read them from time to tome. However there are some RRers who think they’re awful, so prepare yourself for controversy on your thread.

  14. I appreciate that this thread is really only here to give succour to displaced MFFers (of whom I’ve never been one) – but look, if you leave the door open for 24 hours you’re bound to pick up the odd gatecrasher…

    And I’ve bought music:

Warpaint: “Bees” – dreamy stuff from the hive-mind:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guKGVaduqbU

Siouxsie & the Banshees: “Trust In Me” – out-take from “The Jungle Book”. If Siouxsie and Kaa The Python had an eye-rolling contest, who d’you think would win?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RW1AcrclLRE

Robyn Hitchcock: “Madonna Of The Wasps” – deadlier than the male…
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryLSFWgxDzA

Boeing Duveen & the Beautiful Soup: “Jabberwock” – Lewis Carroll tunes in, turns on etc. Beware the jaws that bite, the claws that snatch. I had that frumious Bandersnatch in the back of me cab once. I shunned him.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17TTRWLfSfw

The Cocteau Twins w/Faye Wong: “Serpentskirt” – she’s a femme fatale, and no mistake. Bad case of the hiccups, too.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjRdpC0ul_I

The Who: “Waspman” – I mean, even the drummer gets his 15 mins of fame. Out-bloody-rageous.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bdjv55zwMv4

“Stingray Theme” – Wallace & Gromit impersonators.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E06cNv55jTs

    Be seeing you.

  15. Ooh, Chestnut Mare – horse is frightened by sidewinder, ” a venomous pit-viper species found in the southwestern United States”.
