New York has been on my mind a lot lately. What with the 9/11 hoopla (which i’m trying to ignore). And because i’ve decided to move back there in the future (hopefully not too distant). Doesn’t matter where i live, New York is the place that always feels like home to me.
It’s been ages since i heard or thought of this song, but it’s the one that’s been showing up in my head these days. (Along with Shattered, of course.) Was going to send this in for an earworm, but i figured it would probably scare off the horses. Came out in 1983, the year i graduated college and when i decided to move to NYC the first time. Nina rocks. This is my favorite youtube comment -
Cocaine is a hell of a drug!
And what do you know, and Abba cover i don’t totally hate.
Now that’s what I call “big hair”.
WOW!!! She is so dramatic!!! I have never heard her before, but she really has a unique style!!!
Squeak !
Scary lady !
( Not you amylee, I mean Nina).
I quite like this … very catchy … but I wouldn’t like her to bite me.
Strangely I was listening to this over the weekend, but I hadn’t seen the video. She has most excellent hair I think! I used to try to get mine to do something similar back in the day. She certainly does rock.
I just read Patti Smith’s “Just Kids” which in a way is a paen to New York at a particular time, the Chelsea Hotel, The Staten Island Ferry and parks, made me almost want to go there, if I had a time machine perhaps.
Funny, I was in NYC just the other day. It’s so people-y, in a way that other cities I’ve lived in don’t feel. Fun, though. (And pricey! phew!)
The famous walking-out-the-door tax. (as in it costs $20 every time you walk out the door). But living there was for me cheaper than living here overall. Food in markets was a lot cheaper than the supermarkets here, and better too. So was transportation and recreation. When i last lived there my rent was $625 / month for a studio. And i made a lot more money too. All things considered i got a lot more for my money and a better quality of life for it there then i do here in the boondocks.
Ah the 80′s. Nina was like the missing link between Lydia Lunch & Gina X.
Never heard of Gina X. But Lydia Lunch, definitely, and Lene Lovich was the other one i was thinking of.
Ari Up’s cousin, I believe (though I could be wrong) who was always out there.
