  1. We haven’t got a Labo[u]r Day, but we do have an INSET day – so I’m taking the kids to a local tourist attraction, on the theory that it won’t be so busy because most of the other school children will be in school… We’re going to the Hawk Conservancy Trust near Andover.

      • It was fantastic. A bit cold, but fantastic. Seeing the birds flying… incredible. The children were especially fond of the secretary bird (very long legs, kicks snakes in the head!) and Cheyenne the bald eagle. I was impressed by the falcons and the kites. I was also impressed by the vultures – even when one flicked my head with its wing. They fly low over the audience…

  2. I hope you all had a great Labor day!!!

    Today I was working at my stupid job, but I do have a day of this week.

    When I have days off in the week it is difficult to find someone to spend the time with so I like to think of things that I do alone so I do not stay in the apartment all day.

    I like my neighbourhood, it is Meguro district of Tokyo and so it is pretty central actually but not crazy and quite nice and not too expensive (except of course Kakinokizaka which is like Manhattan or something!!!)

    The neighbourhood is called after the Meguro river and you can walk along this river and it really quite nice and we have a nice Art Museum

    So on my day off I will walk down the river bank and go and have a walk around the Art Museum and have a coffee in the cafe there. I hope the weather is nice!!!

  3. Isn’t it ironic that the home of capitalism red in tooth and claw still happily celebrates the workers, whilst in the land of the Tolpuddle Martyrs the Government is determined to end the May Day holiday.

    But for us retirees, tfd, every day is Labor Day. Today I will be lobbying my MP to get him to oppose the privatisation of the health service…

  4. For Labor (sic) Day, I am mostly labouring putting missing letters into misspelt* words… (ie, I am at work editing research.)

    *Yeah yeah, American holiday, American spelling…

Since I’m actually over here to experience the reality of Labor Day – and I’m not going to criticise their spelling while I’m actually within reach of any sort of retaliation – can anyone tell me what actually happens? Does everything shut, in the way that it does for Maria Himmelfahrt in places like Belgium, so that I’m going to have problems finding something to eat?

  6. I’m in the same camp as GHE at the moment but theoretically I would do what I did on Friday, i.e a trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (http://www.ysp.co.uk/) with my friend, where we walked her kids and dog for about 5 miles, and had a picnic in the sunshine.

    Even if you don’t like sculpture, the grounds are fabulous for walking.

  7. I’m having my morning cup of coffee & contemplating my days labor. I’ve been remodeling our kitchen – a very slow process Involving stripping all the cabinets & repainting them in preparation for new tile counter tops. Been at it for many months if you count the hardwood floor we put in ( I do even if my son provided much of the labor). Said son is coming to town so a short day is in order – specially as I need to work a bike ride into it. To Aba – Don’t worry much – one thing won’t shut down today are the micro-breweries. Hope you’re enjoying the finer side of American beer.

    • Excellent. Yes, I’m enjoying the beer very much indeed; drank rather more than planned yesterday evening, and was planning to do a bit more today. Very distinctive and very different; the one thing I find slightly odd is that they all seem to be presented as being versions of traditional British or Continental styles – IPA, amber ale, Weissbier etc. – but really don’t conform to the ‘real thing’; the IPA I’ve been drinking a lot is delicious, but it’s not a proper IPA (too dark in colour, much too fruity). And is it conventional to put a slice of lemon on the glass of wheat beer, or is that just specific to the place I was drinking? Very interesting effect on the taste experience, and I’m going to have to try it again with a wheat beer along more usual German lines, but I can just imagine the reaction of our neighbours in Germany to the idea…

      • Aba – The local brewers are very experimental & like to push the envelope. Sometimes they go too far but they sure come up with some interesting tastes. Seems to be a raft of fruitier offerings lately but i’m sure you’ll find something to your taste. Don’t know where the lemon slice came from. I’ve seen orange slices used which is Mrs. Fintan’s preference with Wheat ales. Personally I only like a bit of lime & then only with a Mexican lager in the summer (though I’ve been known to slip some on even a Bass ale) Have fun.

      • ABa – one last tip. Boyfriend of my daughter worked as a brewer for Ninkasi. It’s an Oregon company which unfortunately for me is not sold in Nevada. However it’s quite possible they sell in Seattle. He’s had me trying all theirs and I thought them all terrific. The Ticerahops in particular – caution pretty high alcohol content on that one.

      • Around here lemon slices get put most often into Kristallweizen, the filtered version of Weissbier for people who like to see through what they’re drinking. It’s certainly better than a (makes sign of cross) bananaweizen and no worse than adding lime juice to lager, etc.

      • BTW, If you can try to get your hands on (mouth around) some Stone Vertical Epic Ale from San Diego, or any of the Stone beers. Agree about the overdoneness of many of the IPA’s on the west coast; I found myself yearning for a simple Pils after three days of Californian beer culture last time I was over there.

      • Bananaweizen??????? Surely that is against the Reinheitsgebot, as well as against nature?

        Interestingly, given that the dominant style of US craft brews seems to involve three times more hops than you’d normally get in Europe, the pils I tried last night was utterly insipid with scarcely any bitterness at all.
