Hi Sakura,
This BaBa Zula album Kökler has three belly dance tracks – very short.. but thought it was needed in a dance style theme.
I discovered BaBa Zulu when I visited some friends in Istanbul – I totally love them.. they might be of interest to you because even though they come from Turkey they have collaborated a lot – often spending recording time in Japan.
In their distinctive live performances, BaBa ZuLa often combine their music with other art forms such as belly-dance, brightly coloured costumes, poetry, theatre and live painting to create an audio-visual spectacle that appeals to all the senses. So it is hardly surprising that BaBa ZuLa have always enjoyed working with other interesting musicians: Brenna MacCrimmon (singer and authority on traditional Balkan music), Alexander Hacke (Einstürzende Neubauten), Fred Frith (Henry Cow, John Zorn), Jaki Liebezeit (Can) and many more. Due to their close collaboration with Mad Professor they are widely regarded as pioneers of Oriental Dub.
Their last album Gecekondu(shanty housing) has a beautiful Japanese style print on the cover – I find them fantastic musically and visually.
Thank You for having a listen.
(sorry I didn’t get around to chatting to you and Shoey last week – my 9 mouth old baby is having interesting sleep patterns – causing computer time wipeout!)
I really should to get on RR and explain my choices better – hopefully tonight I’ll get some time.
A svelte, boppin’ figure dressed in a tutu steps onto the dancefloor…
It’s only the hippo liveblog…
Jive Soweto is a good loosener.. good open sound, fine combination of the vocals, piano, and sax gets my hips shaking… that crescendo chorus in the middle has rather caused my tutu to slip down though…
*blushes*
Ah, belly dancing.. I’m ace at this. I saw a band playing similar, sufi derived music in Istanbul once, hypnotic.. (no, I didn’t inhale)
Tony Allen up next… watch your toes people… oh, beautiful moment when the horns come in, after the trance-like intro… nice to the way the trombone and sax start to unravel things… everybody back in for a big finish… (springy, this dancefloor!)
Good to see you’ve taken over the Mad Professor noms from Ejay.. also a chance for a breather.. (not that I’m in poor shape at all)
Orch. Makassy- lovely East African sound… my stomping ground, so to speak… I grew up on this sound back in the swamp.. happy memories..
Goran always worth a listen.. where did I put the Slivovitz.. not that I need it to rump shake to this one… it’s from the Underground soundtrack, slightly pepped up, unless I’m mistaken.
*Phew* Someone pass me a towel, I need to rehydrate before part two..
Back in my embroidered Kaftan for the finale… I can walk, I can skank, but if I try to walk and skank, I always end up rocking my backside, dammit..
Roller Boogie is more my thing- just don’t stand on the outside of corners when I’m comin’ through…
Waltzing around in Sane’s what I’ve been doing the whole time here- except nobody’s offered me any wine yet… that’s ok, the slivovitz from earlier on is still sitting a bit heavily in there.
Ballboy gives me a chance to show my indie moves.. staring, mainly.
I remember Raindance from an earlier theme- er, rain perhaps? Worth another outfit change- still have my emo threads from the last Depeche Mode concert around somewhere.. dig the jagged rhythms on this one.
Footloose is a lovely theme.. I’ve gone all slo-mo expressive…
The Ian Dury has some unexpectedly sweet Rhodes at the start.. like the lyrics to this.. with your sweet cologne and your mobile phone and the moves of a desperado… great track.
Last up.. dancing like a white boy.. I have no idea how that goes, I’ll just try to be totally uncoordinated.. hey, this is fun… Oops! Sorry shane…
I’ve only just recovered from being danced on by a bouncing hippo!
thanks nilpferd for taking the time and effort – it was such a pleasure to listen through such diverse tunes to come up with this list… do love your Sunday morning Liveblogs – makes my week.
Hi Saneshane
This is a great selection of tracks! I really liked them, I think Istavrit Belly Dance Mood by Baba Zula is amazing!!!
Thank you so much for sharing them!

woah.. this stomp doesn’t waste any time.. I’m doin’ the Air Guitar to the riffs now..
Time to go downtown… that’s some funky Swiss cheese from Yello..
Guido is more of a kneeshaker, and I guess I have to get my electric boogaloo out for Arthur Baker.. (I put my back out last time I tried that)
Salsa smurf is a good chance to lie on my back and make “creative” whirls in the dry ice with my feet..
Rest’s over! Rock steady crew, meet the biggest B-boy you’ve ever seen..
Hmm, wiggling’s always something I’ve seen as more suitable for snakes and spidas, but with my curves I can give any reptile arthritis…
Samba Soul has a Herbaliser feel, good mid-tempo groove to warm down to.
Outfit change, then I’m back for part three..
Back in my embroidered Kaftan for the finale… I can walk, I can skank, but if I try to walk and skank, I always end up rocking my backside, dammit..

Late again. More likely to get me on the dancefloor than the official picks- just as well we have a ‘Spill, really.
thanks Shoey glad you could make it – think I’m stuck dancing alone now..
