Who’d have thunk that i’d love a cover of my favorite Led Zep song? Trent Reznor and Karen O do a bang up job on it. I know Shoey said that he was dreading this film remake, but now i’m thinking that i had best put myself on as 38th on the wait list at the library for the book, and see the original film then.
That is really good. It’s kind of scary, in a thoroughly appropraite way. It seems to capture some of the claustrophobic character of the book, which I enjoyed very much.
There’s no real reason why the Hollywood remake should be rubbish (apart from “they usually are”), but it might possibly be a bit pointless, as the Norwegian film was meant to be jolly good. I do actually own the DVD, but haven’t watched it yet (oops).
*appropriate* – double oops.
Did you read the book? I’m assuming i should read the book before i see the film, and i’m assuming that i should see the original before i see a remake.
Oh, yes. I always read the book. It’s cheaper than going to the cinema (and you don’t need a babysitter).
Mostly I like to read “the book” because you get the unabridged story (they almost always have to abridge a novel to make a movie; short stories are, of course, a different matter), and you get to imagine your own pictures. It’s harder to do the latter if you’ve already seen a visual adaptation.
And, yes, I’d go along with your sequence – book – Norwegian film – Hollywood remake. It seems only fair, as that’s the order they were done in.
Bother. Forgot to close the link*. Not having a good ‘puter day.
*The link still works, though, and it’s to one of our good friend May1366′s posts.
*Swedish* film. (Just for good measure.)
You probably should. I haven’t read it myself, but seen the swedish adaptation, (and truth be told, I thought it was awful… ) I’ve heard great things about the books, though, but now I can’t be bothered to give them a try, or the American remake, for that matter… So I wish I’d read them first!
Anonymous? sheesh!
Hi Lambre!!!
Immigrant Song has such a killer riff. I’ve seen the films, not really my cup of tea, will I watch the remake? Mebbe, but only cos it’s Fincher directing.
Zala: Actually it’s Swedish, I haven’t read the book but I enjoyed the film and it’s follow up, The Girl who kicked the hornet’s nest, there’s another of the trilogy in production. I can’t imagine any American actress that could come close to playing the role of Lisbeth Salander even close to Noomi Rapace’s brilliant effort, but we’ll see.
See, not having a good day in general. I thought about a) checking it, or b) writing “Scandinavian”, but – no – I hada to charge ahead with the wrong nationality. A thousand apologies to any Swedes who chance upon this.
I’m reading the third (or 4th, can’t remember) book by Norweigan Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole series, those books would make some great films.
Occured to me that i ought to post the trailer in case someone hasn’t seen it -
I have to say that Noomi Rapace is great looking for the part, looks-wise this girl doesn’t come close.
Noomi will be in Ridley’s Alien prequel out next year.
The original “Girl” film was better than the book. Script spared us the author’s excesses, such as the excitement of publication deadlines. The trilogy has been finished for a while. Great that they kept the same cast, but not the same Director, so, like the books, the 2nd two aren’t as good.
Maybe Trent will pick up another Oscar? Apart from that, hopes still not very high for the remake.
I read the first book. It was either very badly written or very badly translated. Really lumpen prose. With a load of weird techno-product placement going on. And a lot of the plot shenanigans struck me as just downright nasty. But then I’m a bit of a wuss.
Oh, and I wasn’t convinced by the central romance. Never knowingly heard Led Zep’s original of the song, but I can imagine this version soundtracking some fast-paced ultra-violent scene or other. I kinda liked it. But I’m unlikely to check out the film. On a completely different note, I pissed my pants at the celebrity band appearance in “Bridesmaids”.
Oh, Bish, you knew i had to do this since you’re apparently been so deprived. Stellar live version here, which you’re highly unlikely to appreciate but at least you can say that you’ve heard.
You’re not the first person that i’ve heard say that the books were shit. Which is probably why i haven’t knocked myself out to get ahold of it yet. My suspicion is that i actually might agree with you because i read a lot of crime fiction and don’t have a lot of patience for the shit because there is plenty of topnotch stuff around. But i will give it a go though, just to decide for myself.
Who was the sleb band in Bridesmaids? (A film i’m unlikely to see in any format).
Hm, I do actually quite like that. Thanks, Amy. The band were Wilson Philips, singing their 80s ‘classic’, “Hold On”. Very funny. I didn’t expect to enjoy the movie much, but it was surprisingly entertaining.
Agreed. Not high art but a reasonably good mystery thriller plot with a great character in Lisbeth. The Blomkvist character, clearly based on the author, became a bit of an ego trip complete with some self indulgent male fantasy.
