¡Nonplussed!

I’ve just got a new computer and am getting the hang of it pretty quickly, however I do have one problem. I’ve only ever used a PC before and this one’s a Mac. For converting rips from that video place we all use, I’ve always used a great free program called “Format Factory” but there doesn’t seem to be a version for Mac. Can anyone recommend a good, free file converter? Video to mp3, especially – I know i-tunes will take care of all the music side of things. I may be being really dumb and already have this on the computer but if that’s the case I really do need to be told. If not, your recommendations will be gratefully accepted.

Thanks ‘Spillers

  1. Maki: Tell me SPECIFICALLY what you want to do, I use Macs and I never use file converters. Are you saying that you want the audio from a video? The way I do that is with Wiretap Pro, it will record any audio that’s playing on your Mac in any format. Check this list and get on it if it looks interesting, it comes out weekly; CNET Downloads
    Which Mac did you get?

  2. Thanks GF.

I’m not worried about converting different music files as I know that can be done with i-tunes. From time to time I rip videos (with Firefox) from youtube to add music to a post. With Format Factory I was able to convert mp4 or flv (for example) to mp3 and use the resulting mp3s in the bloody wordpress player. I’m looking for a way to do that on a Mac.

    Any suggestions welcome.

  3. I got a very basic iMac
this is what the computer tells me about itself:

    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac11,2
    Processor Name: Intel Core i3
    Processor Speed: 3.2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
    L3 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Processor Interconnect Speed: 5.86 GT/s
    Boot ROM Version: IM112.0057.B00
    SMC Version (system): 1.64f5

    • It’s only been 48 hours but I think I’ll be staying. Maki jr has been teasing me all weekend about having succumbed and finally joined the sect! He may be right. He’s a fully paid up member of course.

    • that’s the one i’ve been using. I’ve had problems getting some of the files to play properly here on the Spill though, and Bish couldn’t get one of my earworms to play on the Spillplayer either.

  4. isn’t Format Factory 1.90 (Format Factory Mac)? (if that’s what you are used to) – I just googlee eyed it.. so don’t know if it’s the same!

I must say I’m as dumb on a mac as I was on a pc – there’s just no helping some people.

    • I’ve been there but they keep offering me stuff that isn’t Format factory and costs money! God! How is a cheapskate to live?

Cheers, Shane. Loved the artwork on Steen’s B’day post, btw.

    • I’ve been using Switch (on Mac) for various things – not tried it from youtube to mp3 yet. Mainly done Windows Media files. It has worked great so far, but only starts off free (or at least that is my experience). In a few days’ time, it may well stop working until you shell out for it…

      • I’ve found with those ‘free’ programmes that start asking for money that if you just ignore them they’ll eventually give up and let you use the programme again for free – this happened with both the video and the audio converters I use (PC not Mac). Every now and then they tell me how much more exciting the paid-for version is but I ignore that too.

  5. btw Maki, can i dis-recommend Safari to you? DsD said he’s been having problems with it too. I finally gave up on it, kept crashing (and i wouldn’t even bother to open up Spill posts on it anymore). Bugs, and i think brandy new Mac viruses too.

I finally switched to Firefox 4, and just upgraded again to the new FF5. Much better, no real problems either.

  6. Thanks Amy, I’ve been on firefox from day one because it’s the browser I get on best with – the tip is appreciated, though.

Anyway I’ve just done my first music post and it seems to be working!!

    Thanks everyone!
