So, you go to the shore after school and when you come back you find that an artist you really like has sampled a song you also really like. That’s a Double Win in my book. Here’s Esau Mwamwaya rocking a bit of Tom Petty.
It’s not the most mind-blowing song in the world but it’s nice nonetheless.
Does anyone have any Double Wins they want to share? It could a be a sample, or a cover version, or whatever really.
Not mindblowing? Probably because it was co-written by Dave Stewart.
In case you don’t know:
No no, I mean I love the original Tom Petty song – it’s my second favourite off my Tom petty car tape. I didn’t know DS had a hand in it though. I meant that the song above isn’t the best that Esau has put out.
Kidding!
So, Blimpy, I have to ask: which is your favourite?
And I’m freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee………
…………..freeee fallin’!
Ah yes. I really like that shirt.
On the elsewhere-recommended “first one that springs to mind” principle:
I totally-expectedly loved this band right from debut:
(in itself a double-win, this: look what the vid venue is!)
In my much narrower-taste days, I completely UNexpectedly loved this song:
… so THIS one was nailed-on to be DsD catnip:
Some time ago, some kind soul (ejay I think) introduced us to J.Period’s The Messengers project. K’Naan paying tribute to Dylan over Dylan samples. Double win indeed. Think this one’s my favourite:
I love Eels and I love Prince. Eels have covered a few Purple tunes, my favourite being this one.
This is Prince’s version on the off chance that you are unfamiliar with it!
I remember seeing Eels at Reading Festival once, and listening to their opening tune, the penny slowly dropped that it was “Get Ur Freak On” by Missy Elliot but performed deadpan: DOUBLE WINSTANT!
Another case of first thing that springs to mind is old faves Everything But The Girl covering my favourite Bruce Springsteen track:
Gorgeous.
Double Win eh?
There was a split single released a couple of years ago between Lightning Bolt and Guitar Wolf, which are two of my top top favourite bands in the world, and to top it off it was a Japan-only release! Is that a Triple win?
God yes! Although all I can now think of is that failed launch of “Elephants & Trains” magazine
You have to ‘Spill a bit of it – - — PLEASE!!
This?
That’s not quite it, although it is a fantastic cover of LB covering GW, which is mos def a double win! I think that’s from the GW tribute album.
Neither of the LB tracks are on Youtube and only one of the GW ones is, which is this one, “Kenka Rock” – you can translate it as “Fight Rock”!!
allright, all 4 tracks are in Dropbox under “Ultra Cross Vol 1 GW x LB”
I had a dream that I was at a concert in Central Park (it was actually a concert of various pop stars performing songs from Woody Allen movies). And you two…Blimpy and Panthersan were in the audience, having flown in separately just for the occasion. We had a nice talk during the intermission, and then I woke up. It was a nice dream!
Heh heh…I thought you were looking for an example of having a really nice day and then discovering a new track. Giggle!
I looooooooooooooooooooooooove the photo on the post, mr. Blimp.
Come to think of it Steen, that would totally be an epic double win – like if you found £5 you’d forgotton you had in a pair of trousers, and spend it on a chance record cos it’s kinda free bonus money and the record turns out to be ace!
Mrs Mcf actually took that on her iphone this afternoon, so I can’t claim credit (she is indeed a better photographer than me -I overthink things too much) – it is a great snap, and just out of shot is a mud & sand covered baby who also had a great time.
MOtherflipper! Every single fucking time I forget to press the follow up button. Every time!
Check and….Post comment…
Black Uhuru in town & it’s Father’s Day this weekend = double win, as it’s the perfect hall pass excuse. If Sly & Robbie show up too = another double win (doubt it will come to pass – but you never know).
Cowboy Junkies covering the Cures 17 seconds does it for me – can’t find a link.
and this wild nothing do a perfect take on kate bush – double plus good.
