A gallery of posters for events promoted by The Family Dog back in 1960′s San Francisco has recently appeared on the Grateful Dead’s website. The posters were made by the ‘San Francisco Five’ - Rick Griffin, Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoso, Stanley Mouse and Wes Wilson – and are prime examples of the groovy artwork of the day.

If you click on an image, the whole thing goes fullscreen. Drop a tab and your brain will follow, er, man.
And here’s a little something to listen to while you’re browsing, from a Family Dog event at The Great Highway on 4th February, 1970:
And here, for SpottedRichard in particular, are the Grateful Dead’s sets from the Avalon concert on 12th October, 1968, the poster for which appears in the gallery.
Excellent link, thanks. I’ve got one of the 13th Floor Elevators posters that my wife bought in Frisco for me and a few postcards. Really love them.
I used to have a set of Family Dog/Mouse & Kelley posters which some time ago (in a futile attempt to pretend that I’d grown up) I consigned to the loft. I’ve been searching for them fruitlessly for the last few months but I’m afraid they’re gone (and ‘nothing’s goin’ to bring them back’).
Lord, these take me back …..
are they supposed to go 3d after a while or am I having a flashback to the Hallucinogenic Toreador?
I always intended to collect those but somehow never did, fantastic collection, ditto memories. I do still have my Rick Griffin T shirt though it’s a bit tight these days.
I’m painting the hall just now and can’t escape for long enough to do these justice, tonight maybe.
Fantastic stuff Chris, but I expect you knew I’d like it.
I love these…
Wow! I’ve only just looked at all of these properly. All 176 of ‘em. I should add some more ‘on hold’ music.
I now understand why the lettering was like that: to make it difficult for old fogies (as I now am) to read. I still spotted the Greatful Dead, though.
Chris. I’ve gone through quite a lot of those but I think I’ve got cartoon circly eyes now, so time to take a break. They are so good, Favourite so far is the Blood Sweat and Tears Liberty one, but every third one or so I am seeing something that has been plagiarized somewhere or I am thinking “oh, that’s where Terry Gilliam (Monty Python) got that idea from.”. Glad you are thinking of adding to the music, because I am loving it.
SR: I’ve added a whole new stream of music, starting with a foxtrot, which – appropriately – is also a Ladies’ Choice….
Enjoy!
Awww. You are really spoiling me! Thank you, thank you, thank you.xx
A happy afternoon awaits me!
Well, I had a lovely relaxing couple of hours lolling around, looking through the posters and listening to the tracks you uploaded. The only problem was that I kept shutting my eyes to listen to the music, so I found it difficult to multitask! I truly appreciated the posters and the music. I think I liked the Spirit poster best and the first track on the upload, Dark Star best, but it was a tough choice – all fantastic. I think I got my groove back
Thank you, Chris.
No problem. It’s great to find someone else who enjoys the Dead. I did a post about Anthem Of The Sun a while back, before you appeared, I think.
Those are great, i love them. I came across this site awhile ago – came to mind when you said “drop a tab”. Many similar sites around out there too.
