30-Day Musical Challenge: The Results

And the winner is….

The Spill Community, I reckon. Tons of music, plenty of enthusiasm, lots of discussion and no falling out. Here are the (updated) statistics.

Over the 30 days:

  • 43 Spillers have posted
  • nominating 959 different songs
  • from 714 different artists.
  • 19 Spillers posted every day and
  • 2 of those – debbym and May1366 – chose 30 different artists.

The most significant artists – for good and ill – were:

  • The Beatles, picked 15 times, by 14 different people
  • Tom Petty, with and without the Heartbreakers, picked 15 times, all by tfd
  • Bob Dylan, picked 14 times, by 10 different people
  • Grateful Dead, picked 14 times, by 4 different people (but 11 times by me)
  • Pink Floyd, picked 8 times, by 6 different people
  • Rolling Stones, picked 8 times, by 5 different people
  • Velvet Underground, picked 8 times, by 5 different people
  • Belle & Sebastian, picked 6 times, by 5 different people
  • The Cure, picked 6 times, by 4 different people
  • The Smiths, picked 6 times, by 4 different people

The spreadsheet containing all this data in a handy, sortable form is in the RR box.  So, with thanks to tinny for setting it all up, and to you for making it such a pleasure, that’s a wrap.

Notes for pedants:

  1. The 958 songs exclude a complete duplicate of song and artist but include a small number of different artists’ versions of the same song (e.g. Shiny Happy People by REM and by The Fatima Mansions.)
  2. The 713 artists use the names provided. ‘Tom Petty’ and ‘Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ are counted as two artists.
  3. All numbers are subject to my ability, or otherwise, to copy, paste, create Excel formulae, add and subtract. Oh, and find the occasional needle in a haystack.

    • Polly Toynbee, a co-curator?, did a similar piece in the Graun a couple of weeks ago. The Lady is particularly fond of Standing On The Moon, apparently (the GD song, that is). Her son infected her.

  1. Have to agree that t’Spill was the winner on this! I hope one day to find time to catch up on all the music posted rather than just skimming the comments.

The ‘song for the person who posted before you yesterday thread’ was fantastically frantic, but my favourite just had to be Carole’s Kylie confession (I think on ‘songs you can dance to’)

Thanks to everyone who participated for an entertaining month, and when we get together (and it WILL happen one day) Tinny & Chris’ Spill pints are on me!

  2. I know nobody wants to hear me sing in the shower, but it seems my Soggy Bottom Boys’ I’m A Man Of Infinite Sorrow has gone unrecorded in the Sheet Of The Dead.

Apart from that, think we should put Chris up for The Queen’s Award To Futility.

    • Ah, yes: I don’t sing in the shower; I am a man of constant sorrow (Soggy Bottom Boys).
Amidst all the videos, bonhomie and bold type, it looks like I failed to spot your pithy little one-liner, Shoey. Thorry.

Stats & spreadsheet update coming soon.

  3. Thanks for the Dateful Spread, Chris – wonderfully arcane souvenir of a pointless yet life-enhancing month.

So, chaps, there were some ideas flying around about cranking this idea back up over a less taxing format…? Are we thinking weekly new questions, taking turns? A music-themed question 6 in the EOTWQ? Or is the question goose cooked and we now disperse once more as stramgers, like the jurors at the end of 12 Angry Men, albeit constantly reassembling in various shared spaces?

    • Might get a bit samey with RR, but as the former RRers will probably outnumber those still playing it may be worth a shot.

      Suggested tweaks:

Stick it up on a Tuesday, as most of you seem to want your tapeworms on a Monday.

No artist can be duplicated for the week. 1st to post, keeps their choice.

1st person to post is also signing up for posting a theme for the following Tuesday.

We could have a db box folder for tasty mp3′s.

Nominate May to come up with the 1st theme.

      • “1st person to post is also signing up for posting a theme for the following Tuesday”

that means it’s only open to anyone up and logged on at 10pm (or whatever times that is in the rest of the world!.. and we could get a 10pm feeding frenzy – with little thought.

how would we get Panthersan’s ‘song that makes you want to hang off a lamppost’?

couldn’t someone just ask when a question fizzles out? get four donds and we go again – or just ask near the end if the Tuesday structure is needed? or the question poser picks the person whose post most tickled their fancy – or, am I helping yet? or…..

      • Let’s incorporate the “whoever wants it can have it” protocol for deciding who asks the next question but if there’s been no takers when the thread starts to fizzle out, we default to the first to post.

    • “SSStram – gersssss” is ordering a nip of whisky on a Scottish Island when the hospitality has been too welcoming – any fuel knows that – *HIC*

  4. I believe Fuel lives in Finland. But if it’s Norwegian you’re after, I once met a Norse girl on a boat who said I was a bit stramge.. I could try tracking her down.

  5. *Hi, remember me? We met once on a boat.. no? anyway, there’s this guy I’ve never met who made a typo on this blog, and we thought you might help us translate it from Norwegian.. well, it isn’t really Norwegian.. the typo thing is sort of a running joke, geddit, and.. Hello?!*

  6. Chris, that’s my favourite EVER Excel file ! Thanks for doing it, it’s nice to be able to review the month’s picks so easily.

  7. Chris & Tin, as Bob Hope said, thanks for the memories. I’m on board for doing a single topic version or whatever. Shoe had some great suggestions above. Just need a cat herder right?

  8. Thanks Tinny and Chris. Great fun was had by all. Should any random topics appear, I’m all for it. So refreshing after abandoning the bloated mothership.

  9. Thanks Tinny and Chris. Enjoyed it a lot. I set out with intention of giving honest answers to everything but sometimes I had to be a little bit creative. I will go back over it at some point and have a proper listen to people’s choices.
