The World-Famous Official ‘Spill 30-Day Musical Challenge
(Rules)
Day 29 topic: Kate & Will’s first song should be….?? ? scooped by Maki!
New Day 29 topic: A song for whoever posted before you (first post) yesterday (1st person – do the last to post)
Please include song name & artist in your post for Chris
.

For tfd
Bruce Springsteen – Froggy Went A -Courtin’
P.S. I was going to choose something by Tom Petty, but I can’t keep up with the songs you’ve already chosen!
Oh, thank you, debbym – I love this. Don’t worry: I am keeping up with TP very well.
Didn’t post yesterday – what am I to do???
Sneak back and post a quickie now?
Wow, you’ve nipped back and done it – it’s like time travel, on The ‘Spill !
I’ve only done it in this universe – in another version of reality I’m still on holiday …
Barbryn posted before my first (songless) post, but Panther posted before my actual song post. Guidance, please?
Mellow for Barbryn. Horrendous racket for JPSan. Does that help?
Not really, song choice isn’t the problem so much as which one i’m meant to leave a song for. I don’t want to leave a song for the wrong person and have someone left withut a song.
(Kidding)
Oh. Maybe it’s naptime. I guess i should go out and get some vino, i just realized that it’s MFF tonight. It’s kind of weird being unemployed, i lose all track of calendar and time.
I guess i’ll leave a song for both. But i have to give it some thought because they both know more about music than i do so i doubt that i’ll be giving them anything new.
I’ve decided to apply the rule that effectively ignores all posts that don’t nominate a song. It makes the decision easier.
So, as amy’s song-post immediately followed panther’s in that simplified universe, I’m recording the Deftones in the Ledger.
Right, so I’m looking for a song that combines classic motown, contemporary R&B, a touch of Dylan and The Zutons, Tottenham Hotspur and awe-inspiring eloquence. May1366, I’ll have a think…
…and if it’s set in a coffee-house, that would be good too…
Four Tops – Nice One Cyril?
Diamond Lights – the remix ???
If they could remix it so it sounded like a completely different song…
Of course, Barry Manilow’s Can’t Smile Without You is a Tottenham song, by the same inexplicable processes that make Glad All Over a Crystal Palace song or Bye Bye Blackbird an Everton song. I mean the song itself, largely unchanged, not adapted to suit the team. Any others that spring to mind?
Bristol Rovers sing Goodnight Irene – I have no idea why. Don’t know why West Ham sing I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles either.
And Liverpool nicked that song from Carousel for some reason.
@Fintan (Degree of difficulty medium/hard)
Can – (Fin)Tan go Whiskeyman
Hope you like it.
Shoe – nice one. I like the sorta eastern European flavor & it has herbal possibilities. Can’t make much of the lyrics though.
It’s a Damo Suzuki. Here you go:
To leave the boy with the long hair
Are you singing, rhyme coming?
Here come a naturally chosen,
Call him number one to sleep for.
He sings another grip and still
Momma, pappa know one knows him.
The one way they look at me
I don’t lease in the morning crowd stay.
He’ll get a drink to his head,
Everyone gets to know he’s the next to fight.
As victory don’t get him
When he wins a cup, camouflage.
When I talk to you
You just sing we’re right, the way back.
Can you hear me my friend?
Don’t break room, wish me luck.
Why, why don’t you dedicate
To follow chicks, so stupid, Saturday afternoon?
I, I know you and where you go
Like a stupid guy, stupid guys remain.
He’ll get a drink to his head,
No one get to know he’s the next to fight.
He read the story in bed
Where daddy made me sleep in a frown.
When I talk to you
You just sing you’re right, the way back.
Can you hear me my friend?
Don’t break room, wish me luck.
Why, why don’t you dedicate
To follow chicks, so stupid, Saturday afternoon?
I, I know you and where you go
Like a stupid guy, stupid guys remain.
To leave the boy with the long hair
Are you singing, rhyme coming?
Here come a naturally chosen,
Call him number one to sleep for.
He sings another grip and still
Momma, pappa know one knows him.
Or something. All clear now?
(possibly should have checked lyrics before dedication. Japanese singer attempting to improvise & express himself with German band, further mangled (or maybe improved) by dubious lyric site).
Herbal probabilities indeed!
It was Shoegazer before me, so, and this isn’t massively original, but it is a bit of shoegazing
Slowdive – Alison
That’ll fly. Cheers, Carole.
If I understand the rubric correctly, I am to post a song for glasshalfempty. I’m going for this because: a) I think he might like it (and if he doesn’t, others will!); and b) it’s my current favourite earworm:
King Creosote and John Hopkins: John Taylor’s Month Away
Hope you like it, ghe!
Beautiful, thanks ever so, BB. KC can do no wrong in my book. This album is on my list, awaiting getting to a real record shop (none in my town)
Hope you don’t mind me listening to your song, GHE. That was divine.
Hi DsD! Well, I would’ve chosen a DBT song, but how do I know which is your favourite? (There’s Rebels of course but *coughs* I don’t really like their version very much…)
So you’ll have to have one of MY favourites. Don’t worry though, you’ll like it.
Saving Grace by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
No, I don’t feel guilty a bit.
Well this is awkward…
I think I have Wyngate! I’m going with All the Young Punks – The CLash. I think the two big things Mr. Carpenter and I have in common are a love for the Clash and our age. (are you 41?). And Wyngate=Punk. So…here you go! I hope you like this song. I happen to like every single Clash song ever. And we’re still young, right? RIGHT???
41 years young as you say! This song brings back a lot of memories (got the album when I was 15).
I think I need to do some research on ejaydee!
Don’t overthink it Wyngate, I haven’t been around too much lately so I won’t hold anything against you.
Tip: Something that requires funky frowns & complex dance moves.
Dsd was before me, how about this:
I was listening to it last weekend:
Going Down To Liverpool by Katrina & The Waves
Hmmmm.. DsD did indeed choose his song yesterday immediately before you. However, TFD has already chosen one for DsD because he came on at the start of the thread to say he’d have to think about it.
If we’re being strict, I’d say that TFD picked the first song yesterday, so she should pick for ToffeeBoy who has just time-travelled to the end of the discussion.
The alternative is that DsD has to pick twice – once for Shane who posted before DsD’s actual pick, and once for ToffeeBoy. Like running round to be in the school photo twice !
Oh no – ToffeeBoy doesn’t like TP so I’ll have to find something else…
It’s cat herding time again …
Ah, already we have confusion…
Here you all are, trust Dsd to wreak havoc all over the place!
“All right, settle down. Settle down… Now, before I begin the lesson, will those of you who are playing in the match this afternoon move your clothes down onto the lower peg immediately after lunch, before you write your letter home, if you’re not getting your hair cut, unless you’ve got a younger brother who is going out this weekend as the guest of another boy, in which case, collect his note before lunch, put it in your letter after you’ve had your hair cut, and make sure he moves your clothes down onto the lower peg for you.”
Tee hee !
I think I forgot to click the button. Here I go…..
As I write this, Steenbeck posted just before me, so…….
Carl Perkins “Blue Suede Shoes”
Cos we both prefer it to Elvis!
Oh, I thought you were going to post one for me *wipes tear away*…
I do apologise. OK. This goes out with much love ‘n’ affection to Debby
“You Don’t Know Me” – Ray Charles
(Hope Steen liked the Carl posting, anyway!)
That’s a good one. I take back everything I said two days ago about being able to play the piano. Ray Charles can play the piano.
Thank you, Mitch!
Help ! Mitch, it’s the person who posted before you yesterday, which was debbym. I’m busy thinking of something for Steen who posted her guilty song just before my guilty song yesterday.
Sorry if this comes across as too pedantic. Otherwise, it’s anarchy !
If you’re stuck, Mitch, I’ll be happy to take Peggy Lee’s ‘I Don’t Know Enough About You’!
I think it’s my fault originally…because I just saw ‘post before you’ and thought oh, that’s DsD without thinking that it should be ‘choice before your choice.’
Oh well, it’s Tinny’s fault then,
I think Tinny is doing an experiment using us as unwitting prawns in his evil game. Let’s give a seemingly simple instruction and see what happens…
Thanks RockingMitch. Always nice to have a song from you! Carl Perkins!!
My recipient is Bluepeter. I think you mentioned Penguin Cafe Orchestra on RR last week.. in one of those frequent musical coincidences, a PCO piece popped up in two completely different contexts recently.. one was as the accompaniement for a fantastically choreographed dance piece performed by my daughter’s ballet company, and two days later we heard it as the theme music for the wonderful claymation film Mary and Max. You most probably know this.
Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Perpetuum Mobile.
@Nilp.
That’s wonderful, thank you.
I do love the PCO. I remember the BBC doing a programme with dance routines to their music sometime in the late 80′s ( ? early 90′s).
Is your daughters piece a new version ? Would love to see some more dance choreography to their music.
Glad you like it! As far as I’m aware, the choreography was original work by my daughter’s teacher, she is a former Lativan national and Berlin State opera Prima Ballerina, and her dance routines are for my untrained eye at least very sophisticated. My daughter wasn’t involved in this piece, the dancers were slightly older girls; the company runs from 6 yr. olds to 60 yr. olds.
I have the clip on DVD and can possibly manage to deposit it into dropbox if you’re interested, I’ll have a go tomorrow.
Hi Bluepeter, I’ve just put the dance clip into the RR dropbox, please delete it once you’ve had a look to save space. Bear in mind they are just hobby dancers, and there’s a bit of baby noise from the audience. Still, I think the choreography comes across well.
OK… here’s something for May1366. Not certain, but I’d be surprised if you didn’t like Neneh Cherry or Arrested Development. I think this is a wise and wonderful song (and an oblique reference to Benoit Assou-Ekotto); hope you agree.
1 Giant Leap – Braided Hair
Cool – thanks very much barbryn. A guest appearance by Benny A-E certainly wouldn’t have been out of place in that video. I believe he’s more into music than football, for which he has an admirable workerist ethos.
I’m detailed to bethnoir for this task and it’s an easy one because I know we have this chap as an area of musical common ground. This is the first song I heard by him:
Nick Drake – Hazey Jane II
that’s a big hit here, may1366, the first I heard was Fruit Tree played on the radio by Marc and Lard whilst I was in Norwich in 1992, it made an impression!
Thanks
If I understand correctly then Bluepeter was before me.
In which case I offer this little ditty as I was “singing” it to myself only this morning
Evening all.
Promise to be back to do this tomorrow, but too tired now, and got a 5am alarm for work.
I think, as I had first comment yesterday, that I have to pick a song for Toffee – currently last to add to yesterday. Is that right? My head hurts. Unless someone tells me different, that’s who I’ll think about a song pick for.
G’night all.
DsD – see my comment above after EJD’s post ? Maybe you could pick for Shane and ToffeeBoy…
Good, well you do that DsD…
[psst...Prefab Sprout!]
This is for alimunday … because if you already know it, you’ll love it, and if you don’t … then you also will.
Ooh, thank you – it’s a new one to me but you’re right, I like it!
Here’s one for Steenbeck – it’s kind of punky jazzy rapping, and Ithink you said you lived in London when you were (even) younger….
Ian Dury and The Blockheads – Bus Drivers’ Prayer
Very nice, DaddyPig! Short and sweet. I did indeed live in London when I was younger, several times. And one of those times was during the last royal wedding. We watched the fireworks from Hampstead Heath. It feels very odd to compare this time (of the new royal wedding) to that. In my life and in the world. Very odd indeed.
It is strange isn’t it – though watching fireworks from Hampstead Heath sounds good !
Ooops ! Scrub that one ( sorry bluepeter). I think it should have been Nilpferd.
Which is rather tricky, tempting as it may be to offer up some choice Heino I think it needs to be something a bit more classy.
Hope this will do.
Ha ha, mass confusion.. I think you did post after Bluepeter too, but I’ll gladly take Toots over Heino.. only problem is that most Youtubes are banned in Germany, including this one, and I’m currently down on Spotify *BIG HINT TO TINCANMAN*. Still, I’ll track it down by other means tomorrow… but I have to crash now as the puppy will want to lubricate the weeds in two hours…
Mr. Tin kindly reconnected me.. Toots is definitely classy enough for a bum like me. Liked it a lot. Almost enough to make me want to get married, in fact.
I believe rockingmitch was before me, for him I choose Bob Dylan’s Corrina Corinna because it’s one my my favourite songs by Bob and I hope it might find favour with mitch too.
Thank you, Beth. I have Bob’s version on “Freewheelin’” and also have it by Joe Turner and Ray Petersen. It’s great by all of them, and different by all of them too.
Freewheelin’ is the album which got me into Dylan, it lived on the turntable at the end of my bed as a student, better late than never, I guess. I’ve not heard any other versions, I will check them out.
I bought Bob’s first album, titled “Bob Dylan” when it came out. I had read an article in the Daily Sketch which said how bad his voice was and I thought “that’s good enough for me, if they don’t like him”. I went on to get all his albums on vinyl up to and including “Highway 61 Revisited”.
The first album sells for a lot on eBay these days, but I’d never part with it.
I’ve just realised that my anarchic ideas about posting two songs to hold the chain together, completely messes up Chris’s spreadsheet. But if people make multiiple choices, there will surely be a way of choosing one of them under strict rules for the record.
So, I’m choosing one for Debby too, in case Mitch stands his ground. I don’t know many German songs, but the lyrics of this one are brilliant, and lose a lot when they’re translated into English. I’ve just found this version and on first listen, I like it. I’ve absolutely no idea whether you will Debby. It’s the Gedacht that counts…
Hildegarde Knef – Mackie Messer
I see Mitch has done the decent thing. good on yer. So the above isn’t ‘officially’ the pick for DebbyM, a bonus track I guess.
Thank you, DP, that was a lovely surprise!
Although I have to confess that I’ve had a mild Hildegard Knef allergy ever since being forced to stand in a circle with the other female guests at my friend’s wedding while her [Hildegard's] hit ‘Für mich soll’s rote Rosen regnen’ was played a us, then the blokes were brought back in clutching red roses to hand round. Everyone else thought it was soooo romantic, but for me it was yucksville.
I hadn’t heard of her before, sorry for bringing back a cringeworthy memory and thanks for taking it in good spirit !
I first thought this might be difficult ’cause matching up music with people sometimes is a hard task. When I saw it was Daddypig I thought , hell huge percentages of my collection might work, what luck. Then it was which one & has he heard it before & hell this is getting tough. So using Shiv rules I’ll go with the first artist I thought of – Barbara Lewis. Now Hello Stranger coulda worked perfectly but then I remembered this one. I’ve had to put in my public dropbox ’cause it doesn’t seem to be on utube & I’ve lost my spotty connection again (Help!). Apologies for the record sounds but I’ve not found this in digital yet. Hope you can take Mrs. DP for a spin ’round the floor with this.
Spend A Little Time – Barbara Lewis
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3815118/Spend%20A%20Little%20Time%20Barbara%20Lewis.mp3
Oooh, thanks for that Fintan. That’s just the thing; and I hadn’t heard it before. Gorgeous.
DP- Yay! Mission accomplished.
I haven’t forgotten you Amy! Well, tough to pick for you. Can’t be the Stones, that would be too obvious. How about the other route after the fork in the road? Little boy blue and the blue boys, with Mick & Keith, went on to be the Pretty Things, as you know. Here’s one of their best – ‘Rainin’ in my heart’ (no decent vid available). Hope you dig it…
Thanks Ghe (Gae?), that was actually new to me! Liked it very much!
I’m ghe – the other spelling was forced on me for wordpress because ghe was already taken by some other equally miserable curmudgeon
Slight confusion about “post” before yours. I did post a comment immediately before @Pairubu, but the music post before mine was from @Severin.
Anyroadup, the music post before mine was from @Tempusfugit and as we know this is Latin for the aincient English phrase ““Time Flies”.
(Yes, OK, let’s do the joke………..Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana )
Porcupine Tree……..”Time Flies”
Excellent choice; new to me, melodic, guitars, intruiging lyrics and a great story about how the band came about courtesy of wikipedia. Thanks!
Hello Bishbosh! I don’t know most of the music you post but I recognise K D lang when I hear her, so thought you might like this classic:
Hope you enjoy!
Good choice, Ali. Thank you! Off to see her at the RFH at the beginning of June and can’t wait. And oh my God, wasn’t she just the sexiest back in those days? Got me all confused, she did!
Yes, she is lovely. Hope you enjoy the gig!
Ok, here’s one for Panther –
(if you don’t like it, i’ll try again)
Deftones – Hexagram
Still thinking about Barbryn.
thanks for that Amy, new to me, but spot on for a nice blast on this lovely sunny morning!
Glad you liked it Panther, and they’re worth checking out. Maybe not quite as noisy as your usual metal, but proper metal still.
I liked it a lot! I remember when the Deftones came out and I always admired how they managed to cut through the bullshit of nu-metal and expose how shite so many of those bands were (kinda like how G’N'R did in the late 80′s) by sheer virtue of just being so much better.
Somehow i’ve never listened to them properly though , will rectify this forthwith!
Panther -
I almost posted this one, i think it might be their best known one. It’s pretty ace.
post before mine – that’d be the wonderful alimunday.
So what can I serve up for you?:
Ali’s Here - Ali Farka Touré
(do hope you enjoy)
Saneshane, you are a star – right up my street, thank you!
A song for Toffeeboy. Hope you like this
Kevin Tihista – We Just Disagree
Thanks mnemonic – I wasn’t expecting something from you – I thought DsD was my Secret Santa. Anyway, this was a lovely song and entirely new to me so thanks for that. And I’m sure we don’t always disagree …
Chris was before me I think, so I suppose it HAS to be something ‘Dead related, hmm…..well, my old flatmate and good friend was always listened to 90′s US poppy/punky stuff (see the Screeching Weasel track in this weeks earworms for an idea of what I mean), but he was also a fan of the Grateful Dead and I seem to recall him talking about a cover version a while back……let me just check Youtube…..
…aha! found it:
Punk Is Dead – “Playing In The Band”
I listened to a Sublime cover of Scarlet Begonias the other day, but it was kind of awful (to me, anyway).
Thank you, panther. It’s heartwarming that a group of young chaps would want to create such a thing. The fact that they’ve messed around with the tempo (whilst still retaining the metre) is very impressive. I do hope they play(ed) versions with an extended wig-out in the middle.
Unlistenable, of course, as they’ve removed all the beauty and grace, but I am genuinely pleased that they did it and that you found it, panther.
Oof!
tfd: there’s no undercurrent to my words. I am genuinely impressed and pleased. I think it deliberate that they’ve removed all the beauty and grace, which they’re fully entitled to do. The result is, for me, that it’s unlistenable (more than once) but that can’t be a surprise, Shirley?
Thanks for listening Chris and for being noble and gracious enough not to completely slate what must seem like sacrilege to an uber-fan like yourself
Puzzling, maybe, but not sacrilege. I can’t figure out who their audience is/was, given the natural antipathy between punk and the GD. The commonality in this case, I suppose, is the sentiment behind the lyrics:
I can’t stop for nothing, I’m just playing in the band
Catching up time:
Day 23
I’m with Carol on this; if the person is right, the music doesn’t mater and if the person is wrong, music won’t help. A bottle or two of Gevrey Chambertin might not go amiss, though. However let’s try
Miles Davis – Saeta
Day 24
Lightning Bolt – Assassins
Day 25
(Dons full body armour)
Bob Dylan – Blowin’ in the Wind
I can’t even claim overexposure. I’ve always disliked it
Day 26
Chopsticks (on piano) – Anon
Day 27
Helen Morgan – Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man of Mine
Day 28
Nothing I listen to makes me feel guilty so this answer is a bit a of a cheat
Randy Newman – Guilty
Ok, one for Barbryn. I’m probably not going to come up with anything you don’t already know, so i’ll go with a fairly safe bet. It’s so lovely and hey, it’s springtime and the flowers are everywhere. (just sort of try to tune out the politics for this listen.)
REM – Flowers of Guatemala
Can’t go wrong there. One of their very best. Thanks Amylee.
Funnily enough, I’ve just been writing about human rights in Guatemala for work, so not finding it easy to tune out the politics I’m afraid.
oh dear…
This was a good idea, Tinny. Confusion and good times.
Agreed. Haven’t had ‘Spill havoc like this since the World Cup Raffle. Going to be a close call over which ‘Spill event lasted longer.
Well, arguably the World Cup raffle hasn’t finished yet, since I still owe DarceysDad a poem (sorry!).
Sorry Tin!
Not at all Maki – I think the makeshift topic worked out better than the original for here.
thank the fluffy bunnies – I could well have exploded if another mention of……… *sigh*
As this thing winds down, I must say I am in awe of the comradery and good cheer in here these past 30 days. Hats off to Chris for just the right touch and hats off to you all for taking a good idea and running with it.
Thanks for stealing the idea – tinny.
It’s been brilliant – only trouble is – it threw up loads of interesting comments that could have run longer than the 24 hours on each question.
I must agree that the personal pleasures of the disparate people involve has united the ‘spill – it had felt quite individual at times back there – just a place to dump a few songs – for a select couple of others to listen to.. but this has got me really making the effort to listen to others choices and try and grasp the reasons why they rate a track.
I think distilling it down to ONE choice has really made me and others think hard about the reasons why we enjoy something or (and this is another fun thing) dislike something.
much fun – thanks Tinny.
Agree it’s been great, thanks Tin for bringing back from the wilderness, or maybe the ‘Spill is the wilderness…
Yes, thanks to you and Chris, it has been quite like the old days with eveyone chatting to each other and not taking it too seriously – cheered me up at a time when my sense of humour is a bit frayed. And thanks to everyone who has taken part (pause for Gwyneth Paltrow moment) (sob)
‘Hear, hear’ (as gremlin used to say) to shane for both this and his previous comment. I’m very glad tin changed the day’s topic, as the wedding thing really is pissing me off now. But shane’s other comment is spot on, about how this Challenge has made/let people listen to each other’s thoughts and music: it’s been brilliant.
What little policing I’ve had to do has been a piece of cake. Just my cup of tea and no kettling required.
(Mind you, I have yet to battle my way through the confusion of this challenge. I may have to make some arbitrary decisions.)
another huge dond, and also to Chris.
agreed, it has been lots of fun and illuminating in many ways.
So Tofffe and Shane have both posted songs for the lucky Ali M. How did that happen, and who’s missed out ? I’ve got to make some breakfast for two children, otherwise I’d research it…
Is it Shane?
Ali’s second post was playing catch up for ‘songs that describe her’. (“For I live not where I love”)
She posted ‘Nantucket Sleigh Ride’ before mine on the last topic…
….so she indeed does get 2 songs.
the post after mine was Darceysdad – so in his busy world, he has to run around the school photo and get in twice, as you so elegantly described earlier.
Guess I’m just blessed today – confused, but that’s not unusual …
What do I do? I’ve enjoyed playing the game, but have passed on a few questions cos I didn’t connect with them, yesterday’s for example.
This morning as I read the blog the last comment was by TINCANMAN, so it seems appropriate that I dedicate my favourite instrumental and guitar piece of all time to Tinny.
JIMI HENDRIX – Pali Gap.
And let’s hope the damn link works . . .
Break time at work for my trainee, and my phone’s been vibrating in my pocket like a wasp nest on a windy day.
So it seems I have now got myself the challenge of picking just one song (as per the rules of the game), but to suit both Shane (the correct candidate) AND Toffee (because I said I would).
This needs serious thought.
You are on a pretty safe boat DsD – as long as you don’t mention W*dd*** or R*y*L – (or Neil Warnock, but that’s just a given any old day) have a lovely break!
ps – I know one band that would oddly suit us ‘both’ down to the ground – they covered a tune that could well suit today!
Hi Carolebristol, I have to pick for you I believe. I think you said you liked jazz-rock fusion somewhere back on Day 19. I was listening to this on an Amorphous Androgynous album in the car yesterday and wqs taken by it. Hope you are too.
Mahavishnu Orchestra – You know You Know
I love the Mahavishnus.
I think that their first two albums are their best ones too. The Inner Mounting Flame was an amazing thing to hear back in 1972 when I first came across it.
Thanks tempusfugit!
Trainee now doing his theory test. Wouldn’t you know it, the bloody TV is on in the canteen next door . . . guess what the only thing I can hear is?
Gah!
Anyway, my mind is working well on the sort of song I want to suit both my bluenosed and canary-yellow friends, but I’ll need to be in front of the PC to actually pick and post.
Donds to the praise being heaped on this series for the way it’s brought us back together.
@ barbryn re outstanding World Cup prizes: don’t worry about it, you’re not the only one still with debts to pay from that one – I still owe Toffee a couple of 7″ singles.
Well, I get pairubu, I believe. Rather than post the song that Lou Reed played in my living room when he popped in a few years ago (I think he called it Sweet Sister Jane Candy), I’ll take the opportunity to post the first Pavement song in this marathon: Stereo.
I hope there’s a Stephen Malkmus-shaped hole in the eclectic pairubu music room….
I’d like to dond the thanks to tinny for starting all this off, it made a lovely break in between ROYAL WEDDING watching (oops, sorry shane).
If nothing else they have excellent taste in guitars.
I’ve got a Gretsch like that, silvery, sparkly and a strat.
Bet their Gretsch wasn’t made in China though !
Oh, sorry pairubu. I thought Pavement might be to your liking…
I liked it a lot. I like pretty much everything i’ve heard from Pavement.
I’d just like to dond all the good wishes and thanks being sent Tinny’s way for organising this.
I think “Day 31″ should consist of all of us dedicating a song to Tinny.
Thanks for the thought Mitch but I won’t be here to enjoy it.
And, sounds trite I know but quite honestly seeing how much fun ppl have had with this has been reward enough. Great to see the ‘Spill so alive!
One for ejaydee – bloody hard I can tell you, as my honest admission is my mind was a blank. Having a look at some of your choices here it seems we inhabit different musical universes, which would account for the void in my mind!
You seem to be a much more funky, soulful, jazzy, groovy kind of person than myself. I’m sure if Strummer was alive he’d compliment you on your excellent taste so here’s one of the best and most atypical Clash tracks ever – Broadway
Cheers Wyngate, I like the Clash but I didn’t know this one, and liked it too.
The ground has shifted slightly since this was first posted, thanks to the time travelling performed by TB and Mnemosene… so I reckon we’re still due the following:
A song for saneshane from DsD
A song for barbryn from glassarfemptee (you could re-assign your song for amy?)
A song for severin from pairubu (yes, I realise that he’s already picked for bluepeter and nilpferd but severin’s was the music post before his…)
A song for nilpferd from severin
A song for Mnemosene from treefrogdemon (this is a cheat, just to square the circle, as Mnemosene didn’t actually pick a song yesterday but did put dibs on a song for TB)
For anyone who didn’t post on Day 28, webcore has provided the rule: pick a song for tin.
Confused? You will be.
so if my lovely song from ghe doesn’t count, then who is my suitor?
Wel spotted! It’s actually ToffeeBoy who owes you a song, amy. TB posted for alimunday in error, as her post yesterday was an historic correction…
(I knew I wouldn’t get this right. Sorry. But I blame tinny.)
Mnemoseme!
With love from me.
Damn, I CAN spell Mnemonic.
Heavens, he looks like a happy Keith Richards there! Lovely version, TFD, thank you.
Just wanted to add my thanks to Tin for bringing this hugely unwieldy & delightfully fulfilling caravan to us. It would seem all of us have been graced with unexpected moments of musical bliss this last month. Serves to remind us of what we all knew already. It’s the music! Cheers to all!
Let me add my thanks for a great month. Just llike the old days. I’ll be at a real loose end next week.
Home again, home again, jiggety-jig.
So here’s a song for Shane, Toffee, and what the hell, the rest of you too: the title says it all –
Helicopter Girl – It Doesn’t Get Much Better Than This
Listening to Tom Petty now, tfd: what are those riffs?!?!?! There’s some ZZ Top in there; a bit of Mr Thorogood; a soupçon of Jerry Lee piano; can’t quite place the organ.
Most enjoyable, thank you.
And a manly shoulder-hug to my French friend for giving me the best version of Going Down To Liverpool: you remembered!
Cheers, y’all. Off to play with the kids for a couple of hours.
Well, on the studio version of Saving Grace there’s only TP, Mike and Jeff Lynne playing everything, and in this video they’re rehearsing for the tour, so I think the band are kind of showing off to him, really. They do get a bit worried when he does outside projects.
thank you very much DsD – finally my little one has settled and I get to have a listen (it’s taken 4 attempts) – nice one, worth the wait… now better go read some more Asterix to the big kid (he’s obsessed) and hope he’ll settle soon too.
I was thinking the weirdest overlap in mine and Toffees taste would be Frazier Chorus…
better add this just for fun:
Excellent! Thanks, Shane.
It’s my preferred version too Dsd, thanks to you actually I didn’t know any of them until it got mentioned in these parts.
Thanks DsD – a bit early in the morning to watch something like that! Do their mum’s know that they’re going out dressed like that – they need to wrap up a bit – they’ll cath their death!
Nice one
… catch …
sigh.
Mum’s?????? Good god – I think I’ll go back to bed …
“A song for severin from pairubu”
AAAAARGHHHHH !
Too much for tiny brain….head explode…
Well , I think severin likes old style reggae too, so
Thank you. I enjoyed that.
Well it will have to be a song for Tincanman as I couldn’t think of any “guilty” song. Using a tenuous “metal” link I will choose a song that I have just rediscovered by a band I’ve loved for 20 years. The youtube clip also contains 2 extra songs that I urge everyone to listen to. Thanks.
Cast Iron – Superchunk
Thanks to those posting corrections. There are now only these two duplicates remaining:
Night Nurse – Gregory Isaacs (Day 6: Song That Reminds You of Somewhere): CaroleBristol
My Boomerang Won’t Come Back – Charlie Drake (Day 21: Song That Makes You Laugh): Marconius7
(There are a couple of duplicate songs but by different artists, so I’m letting them through, eg. Going Down To Liverpool by both The Bangles and Katrina & The Waves)
With one day to go, does anyone fancy predicting how many songs we’ll end up with? There were 509 at the half-way point.
Well, I’m back, I’ve missed you all, and I’m deeply regretting not being online yesterday as I’d love to have seen what song someone might have picked for me…
“My Old Man’s A Dustman” ?
“Sad Professor” by REM, in the hope that it’s not appropriate. You sounded highly stressed before you left, so I hope the break was a good one.
Post a catchup for yesterday, Abahachi, and we’ll see!
Noooooooo! Coz then you’ll have to post a song for him and he’ll have to post one for Mnemosene and it’ll become like Groundhog Day….
Welcome back, though, Aba. If you do want to play catch-up, do it in this post or Day 30 to make your picks easier to find.
Oh, all right then, Chris…
Or we could each post a song for Aba, generally taking the piss and teaching the teacher a little lesson about taking time off.
Something like Smoking in the Boys Room ’cause he was complaining on Facebook the other month about bathroom graffiti at the uni.
erm, Hot for Teacher?
Maybe he’d like to teach the world to sing?
Here’s one for The Prof.
Right then, Abahachi:
Shop Around – the Captain and Tenille
Because shop around is what you’ll have to do to play catchup – no song can be repeated you know.
Chris, if I need an alternative song for the “songs that remind you of somewhere” choice, I offer up this one;
The Doobie Brothers and Rockin’ Down the Highway which reminds me of the long straight roads of northern France, getting off the overnight ferry at Ouistreham at about 6:30 am and heading off south with the music just blowing the cobwebs away as we head for our holiday.
I’m terrified,
I don’t know enough about Nilpferd’s musical tastes to select something perfect so I have gone for the easy option. I hope he enjoys it as much as I enjoyed discovering it.
Bela Fleck and the Fleckstones – Flight of the Cosmic Hippo
innit
Ahh, nice one.. the hippo has had a very trying day, and the only thing better than a tepid swamp for soothing frazzled hippo nerves are some nicely chilled cosmic Fleckstones.
Innit.
Now I just need someone to Drop Toots’ Sweet and Dandy, which I’m sure will have exactly the same effect…
Yep, really like this. Thanks, severin.
And I knew it reminded me of something.. I think it’s the initial melody and the slow bass line..
Good heavens! You turn your back for a few hours and all sorts of chaos and confusion breaks out on the ‘Spill. I seem to have given to the wrong person and received from at least one wrong person. Amylee, I believe I am to choose something for you. How about giving Prefab Sprout’s finest moment a listen?
Feel free to make of it what you will.
Prefab Sprout – Cars And Girls
Oh thank you, Toffee! I was hoping that you would gift me a Prefab Sprout song. I’ve liked what i’ve heard of them so far, but don’t know much at all. It was lovely!
I actually do like more than the Rolling Stones, you know.
What well-behaved people you are! Nearly all the loose ends tied up as the end is nigh.
Tail end Charlie here, clearing up a loose end I didn’t realise was loose! Barbryn, forgive me – but hope it’s better late than never. I know you are partial – as am I – to little-girl-lost singers like Victoria Bergsman. So here’s Warpaint, with ‘Baby‘.
Bullseye! Loved this. I’ve been meaning to check them out, having heard good things about them but not, as far as I’m aware, any of their music. Will definitely do so now. Thanks GHE.
“Little-girl-lost singers” is a fair description. Reminded me a bit of Cat Power, which is a good thing.
