Those of you with reasonably long memories will recall that I did an AOTW post on Roddy’s first solo album, “My Secret Is My Silence”, a year or so ago. It was then – and remains – one of my favourite albums of the last decade. So imagine my delight, dear reader, to discover he has a new album out, “The Impossible Song & Other Songs”! (Actually, I’ve known about its imminent arrival for a while, but that doesn’t sound very dramatic, does it?) Anyway, I have been listening to it for the last few days, in anticipation of tonight’s Roddy gig at the Union Chapel (more on that anon). First impressions are that TISAOS doesn’t quite match up to MSIMS, but it is still a rather lovely listen: much of it employing a jauntier, more full-bodied (banded?!) sound than the first album. Here is a little taster from it: my favourite track (so far), “Tangled Wire”. Hope you enjoy…

Woooomble used to live round the corner from me, I saw him in the chippie quite a lot.
Good stuff (though I didn’t like the 80s one with the sax on it that I heard on the radio – !!!)
Did you like his “Before The Ruin” album?
Is that “Rolling Along”? I can see why they have chosen it as the single but it’s a bit “Somewhere in my Heart” Aztec Camera – without the tune!
Not heard the “Before The Ruin” album – is it good?
Dunno, I had a wee listen to one song on Spotify, then felt the urge to listen to early Idlewild….
I moved to E’burgh during the Captain/Hope Is Important era – Idlewild were a legendary live band then, especially infront of their home crowd – the gigs I went to were utter utter mayhem!
That song was lovely. Has it really been a whole year since you posted that album?
Probably not – I was too lazy to check! I have a rubbish sense of time. It might only have been six months, for all I know.

Thanks, elf. Time goes fast enough as it is at my advanced age.
Did I ever tell you about the time? … Oh, yeah, I did. Sigh.
This was beautiful! Thanks bishbosh.
In a spectacular example of Steenbeck Delayed Reaction, I’ve just gotten My Secret is My Silence.
Glad you like, steen! I’ve been thinking about you today actually. I think it must have been you who (months and months ago) put various Nina Simone albums in the ‘Box. I absent-mindedly downloaded them… and then forgot all about them. Spent today listening almost exclusively to “Baltimore”. HOW BEAUTIFUL is that album?!? Just stunning. So thank you!
Heh heh…and I spent the day listening to music you like! MSIMS is really beautiful. Isaac liked it, too, but he sang along at such a high pitch it became difficult to hear. Influencing our odd lives again!
But…full disclosure… I think it was Ejaydee that put those albums in the box. They are stunning, though!
Ah, Ed would’ve been my second guess! Well, I certainly have you to thank for much of the great music I’ve been introduced to over the last few years (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, The Decemberists, probably The Mountain Goats, even a bit of Lupe Fiasco…) – and I fully expect to say the same of the months and years ahead!
Ah, thanks, Bish. I’ve been feeling lonely today and your comment cheered me no end!!
