LeE HARVeY OsMOND

I came across these new to me guys the other day. Out of Canada, an “acid folk” band formed in 2009 by Tom Wilson and members of the Cowboy Junkies and Skydiggers (don’t know them). Cuckoo’s Nest actually sounded a bit more bluesy than folky to me, but some of their other tunes are more along the lines of acoustic folk. I likee.

  1. Not bad. 1st one reminds me of Alabama 3 (so DsD will will probably show up soon). Could deffo hear the stylings of Cowboy Junkies on the 2nd 1.

    • Was that Margo on backing vocals on the second? I would have liked to hear a bit more of the female vocal on it. They also did a song with Neil Young’s sister too. Seems to be more of a project than an actual band though. Thanks for listening.

  2. Sorry, Shoey, I was a bit slow off the mark here.

Listening now, but I came on to post a link to Cowboy Junkies’ Demons, which is streamable here:

Thanks to jforbes for pointing me at it, and apologies that I don’t know how to do live links in comments on WP.

Ace! Best whole package of an album I’ve heard from them in yonks.

@ Amy – never heard of Alabama3?!? Wow. Expect a post from me soon. Though check your iTunes against the name A3 too, which they’re sometimes known as in the US.
And you do know at least one song from them: The Sopranos theme tune.

  3. Thanks amylee – moody stuff, full of expression. Very nice. Never heard of acidfolk before either but I shouldn’t be surprised. Would like to hear them try an uptempo thing so may visit the Tube of You.

    • If you find anything else you like, feel free to post a video. I heard Cuckoo’s Nest on the radio last week and thought they were worth investigating, but i really just touched on them. I listened to these two a few times after posting to see if i still liked them after repeated listens (i do, and the second one grows on me more than the first). I had never heard of acid folk either. Glad you liked.

      • Amy, if you haven’t already, go check out the song Strange Language on the Cowboy Junkies link. Think you may likee that too!

      • Thanks DsD, I just did, and i loved it. Have to try to give a listen to the whole album in the next day or two. I do need to listen to more Cowboy Junkies.

If i had a lot of time on my hands and a more academic approach to music, i might ponder the differences between northern and southern folk music here in North America. I’m in the northeast, and somehow the northern type seems to hit the sweet spots with me more. From Canada we have Joni, Leonard, Neil, Cowboy Junkies, Sara MacLaghlan, and many more. From the northern US, we have Dylan, James Taylor, etc. And even Hendrix, grunge, Prince, Chicago blues, and Joe Bonamassa. Ok, that’s a big stretch, so i had best go back to my work here.
