Name that tune!

Here are ten fifteen second snippets from songs that came up on random today on the car mp3 while enjoying the Madrid rush hour traffic. Spill points for song and artist. This one’s pretty easy I think but if people like this I’ll try to put a devilish twenty or thirty track one together in the near future. No cheating with that iPhone app, please!

  1. That’s two, three and seven, then. Artist for four is also right. Ten is not DD, I’m afraid. You type as fast as you listen DsD – I’m impressed!

    7 Spill points to DsD.

  2. Maki – was Darce not right about no. 8 as well? I hope so ‘cos it was the only one I knew – apart from spotting the artists for 2 and 4.

Remember, these are only easy if you know them. And I clearly don’t …

  3. Can I claim a very cheeky bonus point for pointing out that the correct title is “I Could Be Happy (Dance Mix)”?

    No?

    Oh, be like that …

  4. 1.
    2.Talk Talk – It’s A Shame

    8. Altered Images – I Could Be Happy (Bonus point for TB!)
    9.
    10.

  5. not wanting to threadjack or anything, but here’s another thing to ponder. Why, in the last 30 days, have folks been ending up 3 times on our doorstep with the google search term “bought a pale green ring of telly it is real?” ?

maybe we can answer that question, as well as the quiz questions?!

  6. Oh my gosh, I am utterly and completely stuck [as I am on the terribly technical translation I thought I was just going to zap through tonight - anyone know anything about faux leather floor coverings?]. I thought #1 might be Marc Cohn, but I don’t think it is after all… I’m beginning to feel the pull of my pillow… G’night everyone

  7. State of play so far:

    1.

    4. Dire Straits -
    5. The Stranglers -
    6.

    9.
    10.

    DsD – 9 ‘Spill points
    TB – one cheeky point
    Wyngate – 1 ‘Spill point

and Debby – thanks for the thanks! Sleep well, wish I could help with the translation!

  8. @ debbym Maki’s right about the play on words, but in my case it’s not from Shane. It’s one of the “What do you call a …?” jokes. (The immediate follow-up gag to that one is “What do you call a dead blind stag?” – “Still no-eye deer”

Don’t think No.1 is Marc Cohn. If anything it has more of a Van-The-Man vibe, in one of his less grumpy moments.

    Eyup, wyngate!

  9. Well I’m rubbish, only got No 3 (Japan Ghosts of course) although 2 & 10 sounded familiar. Now I’ll have a look to see how much better everyone else did.

  10. Someone get No.10 soon please. It’s gonna bug me all day. Almost sounds like something off Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams” album. But I don’t think it is.

  11. coming in a bit late here, but isn’t number 10 the middle bit fom Atomic by Blondie ?

Got the Talk Talk and Japan ones but stuck on the others.
    Another few listens me thinks,,,,,,,,,,,

  12. OK had another listen and the only things that come to mind are pure guesses based on the type of sound.
Number one could be either Joe Jackson or Bruce Hornsby and the Range. And number 6 sounds as if it could be something that Talking Heads might have produced.

And the Blondie one is from an extended version (I think !)

    • Weirder and weirder, I would have thought that if you’ve bought something and you have it in (or on) your hand then most likely it is real. But this brings into the equation, what is reality? Am I “real” or just an automated computer response that Blimpy programmed and then left running three years ago when the ‘Spill started?

  13. So pleased that I’m as useless as the rest of you! I recognised Japan and thought no.4 was familiar… and that was it.
I think the ‘devilish’ version would be something of a waste of effort, Maki. How about the ‘sweet and simple version’ instead?

    BluePeter – 2 ‘Spill points

    No clues available yet.

      • Clues tomorrow if there are any left that haven’t been identified by then.

I will say that number one was the inspiration for this quiz.

When it came on in the car yesterday, I thought “This bit really doesn’t sound a whole lot like what you’d expect of this group, does it? There’s gotta be a ‘Spill post here somewhere!”

  15. Something about number 9 sounds familiar – could be imagining it though.

Still trying to work out the Stranglers track

  16. Penetration!Thought of them and dismissed the idea. I’ve listened to Don’t Dictate and the Moving Targets album many times but haven’t listened to Firing Squad very often for some reason.

Stranglers – I’m tentatively going for All Roads Lead To Rome (and getting ready to be shot down in flames)

    BluePeter – 2 ‘Spill points
    Albahooky – 2 ‘Spill Points

    • Will put them in later today.

      No takers on No 1.

It’s The Boomtown Rats’ Joey’s on the Street Again from their first album – one of my all time favourite tracks by them.

      • As this came in I was writing my first RR comment for this week. I’m afraid the MFF is an absolute no-no for me these days. Friday has become the busiest day of the week for some reason. I have class very early (7.00 AM FFS!) with the CEO of one of our biggest clients and then normally spend the rest of the day pitching for new work in other companies and ministries etc. Not something I can do in my normal bushwhacked, bleary eyed post MFF state!
My A list drought looks set to last for some time.

    • Actually, bish, I’m not normally anywhere near as good as I was here. I got lucky on two counts –
      (i) I was first in, because if you look, most of us spotted Japan &/or others; and
(ii) I think of the current regulars, Maki‘s the music poster whose (non-Spanish) taste is closest to mine.
When Blimpy, Mitch or steen do quizzes like this, I’m hopeless.
