Burns’ Night

Tonight is Burns’ Night. It is a date etched into my memory not because I am Scottish (I have no known Scottish ancestry) but because it is my birthday. This year,  I am 40.

It seems like the perfect day to listen to The Burns Unit (who seem to have made an impression on Sheddi; quite an achievement, as he is usually fairly resistant to many of my more off-beat folky purchases). Anyway, here is my current favourite from Side Show, “Blood, Ice and Ashes”, featuring the delectable vocals of Karine Polwart, with a rock-influenced backing:

  1. And a very Happy Birthday from me too, Amanda.

Turning 30 bothered me; turning 40 did not. I went to see Michael Schenker at Bradford Rio’s and rocked like a bloke half my age (and size!)

Will listen to the song when I get in tonight.

    Cheers.

  2. Happy Birthday Zala..
I think having a hormonal pregnant Ms. took the edge off my 40th birthday stress last summer…. my 30th was a mess… big style.

    Have a lovely day.

  3. Happy Birthday, Zalamanda! Unsurprisingly given our shared music collection, I went to see the Burns Unit at the Jazz Cafe in Camden last week – and very good they were too. That King Kenny Creosote may look like Baldrick, but he has a phenomenal voice. As does Karine of course.

  4. Thanks, for the birthday wishes, everyone! I wasn’t angling for them, honest… but I couldn’t make a post on the topic of Burns’ night (thanks for the correction, TFD – not sure how that one slipped past my internal editor – twice!) without mentioning it.

  5. Many happy returns to you! I tried a vegetarian haggis this time last year, not going to bother again, hope you have an enjoyable day and evening x

  6. Zala, did you get your Amazon account? I remember i think that i had to submit my blog for them to check out first before they approved the account.

And here’s a birthday tune for you (was going to post Time the Avenger, but that might not have been an appropriate birthday message)-

    • Thank you, Amy; I’m always up for a Pretenders tune! And yes, I did get my Amazon Affiliate account. They were quite quick – I think they approved my blog the next day. I have one book review up – and two clicks! – but no sales, so no conversions yet.
