Earworms (24 Jan)

Will Bradley Trio – Down The Road A-Piece
I don’t recall when I discovered this song but it was way back, way back in the 40′s. As a teenager I used to recite along with the ‘lyrics’, I had it down perfect. It’s also been covered by over a hundred other artists, including the Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Bruce Springsteen, Jerry Lee Lewis, Glen Miller and Ella May Morse! – goneforeign

Bobby Bare – Tequila Sheila
As y’all know, I’m a bit partial to the cactus juice, especially in a judicious mixture with triple sec, lime and salt, so this was bound to be a success with me. Cheers! – treefrogdemon

Ryan Adams – The Rescue Blues
My favourite Ryan Adams song, and he is prolific, (I know some completists), this track contains so many elements of what appeals to me about rock music in such a perfect balance that it just blew me away when I first heard it. Still does. – webcorewebcore

Vio / Miré – Everywhere You Had Been
A tragic lovesong/ghost story, which bears a certain resemblance to DsD’s beloved Hannibal, MO. Like all good earworms, it’s been haunting me since I first heard it last summer. – mnemonic

John Grant – I Wanna Go To Marz
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme is so last century. We need an update for the age of obesity. Along comes honey voiced John Grant with ‘strawberry marshmallow butterscotch chocolate hot fudge’. This from a Magicman nom for fantasy songs, the very lovely ‘I wanna go to Marz’ (presumably JG didn’t want a lawsuit from Cadbury Rowntree). From a fave album of last year ‘Queen of Denmark’, which also features ‘Caramel’. Yummy. – glasshalfempty

Eleventh Dream Day – The Raft
A relentless, noisy, but rather uplifting song about being all at sea. I do like controlled feedback. – chris7572

  1. Yup, liked them all. None of the at-first-listen ones came anywhere near my & webcore’s reaction to the Ryan Adams aural debut, but I’d quite happily listen to more by any of these artists.

    Artists? Artistes?

Is there a pedant in the house?

  2. Glad to read the positive EDD comments; cheers! The Raft is from a 1993 album called El Moodio, on which there are several great tracks. I bought their next two albums but they were both disappointing.

  3. Some lovely music again this week (as usual), apart from that noisy thing at the end….
But I did love the instrumentation of Vio/Mire and John Grant, and the bonkers lyrics of Tequila Sheila. The gf choice is a piece of history that must be preserved but I can’t say the same for Ryan Adams, I’m afraid.
Just listened to the Vio/Mire again: definitely my favourite. Quite beautiful.

  4. Evenin’ all. Another lovely selection. The Will Bradley Trio is not really my bag, but it’s very jolly, very listenable – I’m sure that’s damning it with horrifically faint praise! The Bobby Bare is a lot of fun too. Never quite got into Ryan Adams – think I only really know “Come pick me up” (which I love). This one is nice too – love the gospelly backing vocals in particular. I can see myself listening to Vio/Mire again – am intrigued by its quietness. Sometimes I love a bit of pizzazz (funnily enough), but it’s the quiet ones you’ve gotta watch. Or listen to. John Grant was my top RR-related discovery last year – not sure this quite matches the album’s title track for me, but still lovely. Wasn’t convinced I’d like “The Raft” when it started, but I loved it. Probably my favourite of the lot! Thanks again everyone!

  5. I loved this collection. The Will Bradley Trio was fun, as was Sheila Tequila (I like a margarita myself.) Like Bish, i never really got into Ryan Adams either, but that was probably the song i enjoyed most of his to date. And I absolutely loved the last three. Thanks all, and the Makis.

    • Chris -

Is that your first earworm? I think it’s the first of yours i remember since i’ve been on here. Keep ‘em coming.

      • No, it’s my fourth, I think, amy. Glad you liked it.
I’m extremely selective about music I buy (yes, even Dead recordings) and, when you take out the stuff I’m not so keen on any more, there isn’t that much left to choose from that would fit in the ‘earworm’ category. But I’ll find something else some day….

  6. just adding my admiration for all.

GF’s number and the last one from Chris were my highlights, but all good!

    Thanks, all

  7. I’ve enjoyed everyone of these. Standouts ( this is very random ’cause really everyone of ‘em has worked tonight) are the Vio/Mire ’cause it’s right in Mrs. Fintan’s wheelhouse & I can already here her saying ” got any more of that ” which makes me smile & The Raft ’cause it touchs all my old physche’ buttons & was just the edge I needed tonight. Thanks again all for a great effort.

  8. Some great stuff here. Not heard Will Bradley before but I love it. As GF said, there have been many covers of this song and I’ve got Chuck, Ella Mae and a really good version by Merrill E. Moore.
Bobby Bare is someone I’ve always liked since “500 Miles” and “Detroit City”. This one is up to standard.
Ryan Adams was new to me and I liked it a lot.
Vio/Mire, John Grant and Eleventh Day Dream also push good buttons for me.

  9. As usual, a musically interesting mix, and also as usual mostly totally new names to me.
‘Teqilla’, I’m another with a fondness for most things Mexican, I used to always bring back a 2 litre bottle though in later years I always preferred to travel to the south, to Oaxaca where they make their own version of tequila; Mezcal, usually sold with a larval grub in the bottle. special treat!
Back to the music, ‘Sheila’ sounded to me like what I heard on LA radio in the 70-80′s, fun but not too heavy.
Rescue Blues, I share webbie’s and DsD’s comments for this one, a new name to me.
Usually when I listen to some unknown piece here I’ll google it hoping that Wiki will give me some background, I sure needed it with Vio/Mire, whatever that means, plus a bit of help re the songs meaning would have be good also but their PD dept is about as obscure as the song, there’s nothing out there. Though it did take me back to my childhood walking on frozen lakes and listening to ‘em cracking! Liked the horns.
Marz: Don’t know what to say or how to even categorise this one, a total bafflement. Good build though.
The Raft: As Chris says ‘relentless and noisy’, but interesting, not really my cup of musical tea but interesting.

Did I really say ‘artistes’? Not a word that’s usually in my vocabulary, particularly if I’m talking about blues artistes. Must be getting senile in my senility.

  10. It’s been a while but I’m back in the neighbourhood. Another great collection.

The Will Bradley Trio was new to me. Put me in mind of Jesse Fuller, which is all good. Enjoyed it very much.

Bobby Bare’s track record is known to me, though I’m not really a country fan. However, I like the south of the border feel to this ‘un, and particularly Bobby’s tongue in cheek vocal delivery.

Vio / Mire. New to me, reminiscent of Cohen and Faithfull. Very pretty, atmospheric and insistent. Loved the horn. Something 60s going on there.

John Grant was not my usual fare. Tubular Bells piano, 60s style opening vocal cleverly morphs into 21st Century arrangement. Very well done. I liked it.

Eleventh Dream Day were another new band for me. What is it with the 60s feel this week? ‘Course, I was smitten with the feedback, too. Love the portentous male vocalist whose voice contrasts so well with the womans’ more ‘natural’ style. Really liked this ‘un and would love to hear more of them.

Maki, great vision to stand this lot side by side.

  11. thanks chris for the Eleventh Dream Day! Never heard of them before. Loved it. It seems to bring the 60s up to date. Just ordered more.
