So, here we are again. I do seem to recall being in a slightly more cheerful and optimistic mood this time last year – can’t remember why, but it did make it easier to think of some humourous mock awards to scatter amongst the genuine categories. Still, this year I can at least offer you an all-singing, all-dancing extravanganza, with added Phil Collins (whenever I feel the urge to flee the country, I keep repeating to myself, “Yes, but do you really want to be another Phil Collins?”). First, however, the usual cornucopia of recommendations for Book of the Year, in case anyone gave you book tokens for Christmas; if not, you can always play Guess the Recommender…
David Abram, Becoming Animal
Michael Connolly, The Reversal
Jenny Erpenbeck, Heimsuchung
Jonathan Safran Foer, Eating Animals
Tim Harford, Dear Undercover Economist
Peter Heather, Empires and Barbarians
Barbara Kingsolver, The Lacuna
Andrea Levey, The Long Song
David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas
And now for the main event, the Villains, Heroes, Films and Albums of the year, I give you…
I really enjoyed that, excellent work there Abahachi.
That Mick Fleetwood/Sam Fox Brits Awards is the gift that keeps on giving, isn’t it.
Thanks for the mention, Abahachi, progeny-wise (spawn?) …you missed out Shane’s baby though. Fine job apart from that…
For anyone else who was miffed at no Mojo to vote for – it’s all round to mine on Friday for frozen daiquiris and TP&TH nite on BBC4!
Damn. Very sorry, Shane. I’m not having a terribly good day…
Sorry, Abahachi – that came out a lot meaner than I meant!
No, no, I really should have remembered, and it’s better to be reminded by you so that I can get in an apology before he drops in…
I’ve just been extra baby-sensitive I guess (see above).
no worries from me Abahachi – unless you are in that Baby zone it isn’t worth stressing about.
although Pip’xeo (or his super hero alter ego x-boy) will come and track you down and put a pin in your bike tyre when he is old enough*…
*born to be mild…
Mucho admiring of that microphone technique Mr A. See, well worth working with professionals like Mick, Phil and Sam; pick up all kind of tips. Thanks for your dedication to this and a great finale!
Just fab! We loved it, superb stuff, Aba!
So that’s what a BBC accent sounds like. Loved it, and i’m likeing the sound of the album of the year too, and also the Best Coast too. ( I obviously missed a lot of music in the past few busy months). Thank you!
Superb stuff, Abahachi – with that voice, I can imagine you taking over at Lower Loxley now that Nigel Pargetter seems to have bought it. Thoroughly enjoyable, not just for the presentation style but the clips as well – loved the Shorter – but it all cut out (my computer not your podcast) before Album of the Year was revealed so which one was it?
Steve Mason, Boys Outside: a dark horse if ever there was one, featuring at 2 or 3 in a number of different people’s ‘Best of 2010′ lists, started poorly but slowing climbed up the leader board in the course of voting…
Wonderful!
But you’ve missed a book off that list, Mr. Modest…
Brilliant stuff Abahachi! Loved the presentation and the clips and the whole way it was presented in general and of course, very happy about the Album Of The Year. Cheers!
That was fun & beautifully formed. Results were pants, of course, just like any other award show.
Shall I tell (fellow Fifer) Steve Mason? He’d be pleased I think.
Fantastic job, Aba. Really enjoyed that and very relieved that a) you pronounced my ridiculous blog name perfectly (not that it would have mattered) and that b) we had a very sensible choice for Hero(ine) of the Year!
