I spottied- I read your comments – I delighted in dropbox – I put a Stones Mash-up in my other list – I ignored who suggested what. This is the best I could do.
Hope you Enjoy:

1 Chaos Engine Pinback
2 Last Time Around Del-Vetts
3 Armageddon Days The The
4 Tonite Is A Special Night (Chaos Mass Confusion Mix) Tricky Vs. The Gravediggaz
5 I Predict A Riot Kaiser Chiefs
He we go with some saneshane Havoc picking.. the “Killerman Gold Posse” kick us off with a delightful number everyone seems to have fun with, French Frith Kaiser Thompson, a supergroup of sorts, joyfully chanting along in childlike happiness and Robin Hood philosophy.
On with some Uhh, sex and mayhem….”When you buried my head….In your child-baring hips…And you splintered my bones, ..And rattled my teeth” It’s more fun to listen to than read about… pretty much like the real thing…..I’m told.
”Triptych; Prayer/Peace/Protest” is introduced by Roach’s signature drum moves, an eerie operatic vocal of oppressed angst-emoting, a 5/4 beat from the percussionist and bizarrely written for interpretive dance – if that hasn’t put you off – you could have a listen to a most beautiful and frighteningly interesting pivotal work in the early-’60s African-American protest movement. Stunning.
Detailed, reflective songwriting in contemporary indie is more my thang and Shearwater put the Red Sea, Black Sea in a bottle – let it settle and then Shake it about vigorously – resulting in a large amount of alternative pop sprayed about my room.
Digital hardcore founders Atari Teenage Riot were an attack on the increasingly neo-nazi influenced German techno scene back in 1992 – this is -to a 90′s teenager – what Max Roach was to the 60′s… pick your generation granddad.
A chaos engine is a home computer that develops complex song structure while maintaining indie pop sensibilities and obviously works perfectly for Pinback (I may have made that up) lovely track.
Del-Vetts created dirty rock back when Garage was a million bands taking a bit of fuzz & trying to fry the world with it (thanks Fintan), the song gets picked more for the DIY ethic of its ‘let’s form a band and release a single’ creating musical nuggets havoc, than the splendidly retro rock. ACE.
The The cause mayhem by being impossible to find in a search engine. Armageddon Days was written during the 1980′s but is still poignant today as it’s geopolitical rants have continued to develop from the 80s through to the present time. Immense.
Tonite Is A Special Night is the perfect blend between Tricky’s trip-hop sound and the Gravediggaz horror-core style. Quite a coup for Tricky using Wu-Tang super-producer RZA at the height of his talent.
and I leave you with the Kaiser Chiefs perfecting their five year olds playground rhyming – it’s brilliant, grilliant and a little bit: not very sensible.
Why has a NEW YEAR theme never been done..?
shall we whack our favourites into a file as the next subject.. and see if anyone takes up the curating baton.
See, I knew it would work if I said you were handsome…Actually what I said about that dream is quite true.
Hmm, I seem to be having quite a good week.
Nice list, Shane, and great write-up!
Here’s a nice, gentle song about New Year’s Eve from Boo Hewerdine (and John McCusker and Heidi Talbot):
Armageddon Days is boxed.. I used the …. Havoc folder.
Great write-up Shane, and it’s good to have the playlist in reserve for what is probably going to be a fairly chaotic New Year’s eve..
Funny how many of these tracks are nostalgic for me.. whenever I hear ATR it reminds me of one of my first flats after I moved to Germany, my flatmates weren’t really anarcho but were certainly sympathetic.. The The was a big part of my latter student years, and Tricky accompanied my move here… Fred Frith was also a frequent visitor to nearby jazz clubs, I think he still lives in Stuttgart, we both moved here about the same time. (Fred must have somehow gotten wind of my decision in advance)
Oh, thank you, can’t wait to listen to it. What’s this about a Stones mash up? Above and beyond. Off to work in a bit, but off all weekend to catch up. Thanks again!

‘rolling confusion’ track two.
it’s the best I could do, to get some Stones in.
(not that I’m averse to the stones – they were on continually when I grew up – and I really quite enjoy certain eras…. we also used to have fun joking with Micks Mum in my mates shop while she rolled her eyes about finding another present for that Jerry woman “what about wipes in a fancy box” – to clean her sticky fingers.. etc. It was a long long time ago)
Wonderfully havoc-filled list, SHane, and good write-up. We should make all the gurus create their own art for each list.
As for new years’ day songs…Grace Cathedral HIll – Decemberists!
tinny’s Decemberist suggestion just missed out this time – because I know it so well – so surprised it wasn’t zedded.
love Grace Cathedral Hill.
My Scooter nom couldn’t have been far behind. Come on, move your azzz.

I love the French Frith Kaiser Thompson albums so a real treat to see them getting picked. I’d love to see RT getting further out of his milieu in years to come, Frith and Drumbo pushed him into different places.
I’ve been giving that album a spin – it’s the pleasure and enjoyment that exudes from the recording that thrilled me.
David Thomas too
Just popped in to say what a fantastic piece of prose. And that I’ve heard of the Kaiser Chiefs !
because of the records – or because Leeds signed a player from them?
I mean, Thank You..
I did try to be more on the discovering things side of a playlist.. that could be obvious, because it doesn’t really scream Havoc at me.. I do think- just from this speed session – it would make a good RR topic.
Woo-hoo! A Shane A-listing to see out 2010.
Thank you my friend.
May well choose the Havoc playlist to soundtrack my panicked deadline-fast-approaching attempt at the piece for The Grauniad
. . . if I can keep my eyes open long enough! Good job there’s no RR MFF tonight.
Hope the writing is going well DsD.. I had to cut my favourite justification for James’ ‘Laid’:
…where Suede would reside in the back rooms of nightclubs relaxing on silk scatter cushions and sleeping with boys who liked boys who liked the same girl… James gave off the impression that they swapped car keys in suburban cul-de-sacs getting laid on nothing more glamorous than a 1970′s beanbag.
The Havoc they cause these days is mostly down to playing ‘sit down’ too early in a set, causing the beer-bellyed, knackered kneed audience untold discomfort getting back onto their feet at the start of a gig…. the ‘messing around with gender roles’ causing blushes between partners whose only pleasure is trying on their other halves underwear.
Shane: If you knew Mick’s mum: my boss at the university took a sabbatical leave in the early 60′s, he spent it in England. His next door neighbors had a young lad who was an aspiring rock n’ roller, when his sabbatical ended he returned to LA and a few months later got a letter from his neighbor, she told him that her son Mick and his band were coming to LA and she’d given him my mates address in case they needed a place to stay!
Hi Ya GF,
I wouldn’t say I knew her – my mates mum was a Vogue cover model in the late 50′s early 60′s ..who set up a shop in Kent – we helped out running it and making stuff – Mick’s mum used to come in and chat with her.. she put up with our immature Stones puns and my friend Rich’s brilliant Jerry impression.
My mum and dad saw The Stones in a bingo hall with 50 other people – when they started – but that’s a hole other story.
and i’ll refrain from repeating my “my Mum going on a date with Ronnie Wood” story….!
Started my day with an hour and half drive to go skiing, Temps about 10 F & so dry a gator was mandatory. What it did was take about a foot or more of fairly moist snow threatening to become Sierra cement & turn it into silk pudding. Absolute bluebird day & even with xmas crowds every one smiling. In the afternoon I ran into a friend I hadn’t seen in years & we topped off the day with a couple pints of winterlager. Driving home the physical afterglow was palpable & I thought to myself -doesn’t get much better than this’ Got home showered & made some tea prepping for a dinner out with Mrs. Fintan when I remember there was to be a Shane list. Imagine my joy 2 picks & a quote. Thanks Shane- I’m totally stoked. I think I might have to put a bet down somewhere tonight. I couldn’t have a better day .
That’ll be Richard Thompson OBE at the top there btw
Yay! Trebles all round! Of course these baubles of the festering corpse of Imperialism should be flung back in the faces of our Bloody Emperors . . . or passed on to student protestors to wear whilst poking Duchesses with sticks. Hope he writes a song about it.
Maybe him getting an OBE will console him for losing the top spot on my last.fm list, as he surely will this weekend (which I am devoting to playing all Tom Petty’s official releases in chronological order).
Nice work Shane, great write up and looks like an eclectic mix, but we wouldn’t have expected anything less!
