  1. Oh, I’d forgotten how lovely Teenage Fanclub are!

Donds for Blimpy’s. I had a sneaking suspicion that song would be in there somewhere.

  2. Another lovely haul. On first skim-listen, particularly loving Shiv’s (Teenage Fanclub?), Blimpy’s, Maki’s, Tin’s, Shane’s, ToffeeBoy’s (ah, Tracey!)…

Are there only 18? My player grinds to a halt after Gareth. I feel like there were more number 3s than that!

  3. Cheers Blimpy! Their studio album Green Delay is also very fine, though I think the Alive version of Abraham’s new gift, as here, is punchier.
Like Debbym’s pick a lot, quite reminiscent of The Triffids. Fine lyrics, seldom I hear German language songs with that level of sophistication.
Abah’s, Albah’s and May1366′s choices also suit my demographic, love the Rhodes in Mnemonic’s pick.

    • Glad you like Nils Koppruch, Herr Hippo (he’s the singer of the now defunct band FINK). It is rare for me to enjoy German music – the old Nina Hagen Band and die Toten Hosen are the exceptions, with maybe a little Ougenweide thrown in* – so I quite surprised myself with this (but I do think it’s by far the best track on the album [Caruso])

On a side note, TonNL sent me a track by Ina Müller, who I only knew as half of the QUEEN BEE cabaret act, so I looked out for her and really enjoyed her [plattdeutsch] album ‘Die Schallplatte – nied opleggt’

Where is Ton, by the way, and gordonimmel and daddypig and ali and lambre (I believe FP is off somewhere playing tennis)?

    • It’s more for the way it’s said than for what is said.

It’s a one off live thing that El Cigala did in Buenos Aires – a sort of flamenco reinterpretation of a number of tango / milonga classics.

    • The song is about El Polaco Goyaneche (a well loved tango singer) whose voice was described as “Garganta con arena” (throat with sand). It was composed upon his death at the beginning of the nineties. As lambre says the cheering is at the end of the last verse of the first run through the lyric. It was recorded at the Teatro Gran Rex in Buenos Aires where the audience are well-known for expressing approval or otherwise of performances. This was the first song in the set and so this was the first real point where they could let El Cigala know what they thought. He has since said that if they hadn’t cheered, he would not have been able to carry on. What he was doing – flamenco re-workings of tangos etc isn’t to everyone’s tastes (I’m in a minority of one at home in loving this album to death, it should be noted) – and he was understandably nervous.

  4. The Burns Unit are getting some serious year-end love on the ‘Spill – kinda wished I’d submitted “Since We’ve Fallen Out” but I only heard the album very recently (still made number 10 in my list mind)

  5. Only halfway through and I’m only familiar with the greats Big Boi & John Grant, two of my albums of the year, Nilpferd still edging it at the moment, though Carol’s pick playing at the moment is pretty tasty.

  6. Barbryn’s is in my top ten of the year. I had so much trouble narrowing this down to three that finally I stuck a pin in the list to get them.

  7. So far I like Tinny’s, Fintan’s and barbryn’s the best…and I might like Mnemonic’s only it kept breaking up while I was thinking about it. Listening again…

    • !!! SPOILER ALERT !!!

      Phosphorescent – The Mermaid Parade

The album “Here’s To Taking It Easy” is well worth checking out. I’ll leave it to you whether you want to do a Google Image Search for the Mermaid Parade.

      • Aha! Phosphorescent’s been on my list for some time, but for some reason I haven’t done anything about it – now I must, for def.

  8. Loving yours too, Shoey – it has drawn me back to the computer from my pottering about the flat just to comment. Not that anyone needs me commenting individually on each track that comes on chez bishbosh…

  9. I have enjoyed every one of these! Can’t wait for ones. (Was going to write number ones but Tin’ll be on soon and would have a field day with that!)

Oh they’ve just finished. Back to Nilpferd and and another listen all the way through – thanks everyone.

Btw, got an unexpected cash bonus at work today, so first round at the Chester Social is definitely on me if that persuades any more of you to make it…

      • OK – where’s the delet post button when you need it! I now realise that it’s by a band called Stars & Sons and that the reference to Todd Rundgren was a general enquiry.

So to answer your question, ‘no, I haven’t’. What would you recommend?

    • There’s nothing in the box yet GF. As far as I can see the mp3′s are tagged only with the spiller’s name in the WP media library.

Also, I think there’s a few of us who enjoy the guessing game!

We’ll be put out of our collective misery once Shoey gets the #2′s into the box.

    • I don’t think the No.2s list has appeared in the Dropbox yet. But I’m sure there are ways and means to discover what the tracks are without asking!

  10. Sorry for the false start. Must have forgotten to save the changes in WP – so had to scramble to re-tag everything again. Will sling the list & tunes in the box later, when I’m back at the computer.

    • I only get comments as emails when I’ve written the original post – perhaps I need to change my settings… (Or perhaps I am on here often enough that I don’t need email alerts!)

    • I’m getting them as mail, but maybe it’s because I had commented at the beginning.
Bish, underneath the comment text box, you should be able to tick “notify me of follow-up comments via email”

  11. Oh wow! My children are starving (and dirty), but, hey, it was the last day of school today and I’ve just listened to this playlist in its entirety (is that an actual word? I’ve also been nipping at Canadian whisky)

Am now adding my voice to the ‘Why wasn’t John Grant on the album poll?’ campaign. Otherwise a Very happy bunny says thank you ‘Spillers!

    • These comments at the end are all earlier ones…Nobody knows why!

Canadian whisky? Don’t worry, it’s not as strong as the real stuff.

      *ducks*

      • Hey tfd, are you going to be able to make it to your grandbabies this Christmas? We are due (yet another) blizzard tonight – great for staying in listening to Festive ‘Spill picks, not so great for distant baby-cuddling though. Hope you get there!

      • Don’t know yet, debbym…what worries me is getting down there and not being able to get back! (I already missed my currently younger grandson’s 2nd birthday) Plus my new Texas grandson hasn’t made an appearance yet…worrying times.

  12. Am guessing the strange sequencing is down to me refreshing the post a few times as I loaded a batch of tunes. Or the tunes blew WP’s mind.

Steen, if you reload & sign up for e-mails again all may be back to normal.

(Wonder what havoc I can cause on Friday?)

  13. Weee! Comment roulette is fun.

I’m sure the help desk (after holding the line & answering questions from a machine for 45 minutes) would suggest a log out of wp & log back in. But that hardly ever works.

    • see – that comment came in my e-mail – but could I find it on here… nah.

could you slip the 1′s in my file please or bring them forward to Thursday (I’m off early Friday to my folks and don’t think I’ll be able to listen)
only joking – just leave them up til sometime next week – bloody Christmas -get’s in the way of spill listening.

My car stereo is doing a ‘Switch it off and switch it back on again” and bizarrely works again (but it’s the whole car, not just the music player) – I think it’s programmed in.

      • I have the same problem with Friday. Weather permitting, I’m leaving early that morning to go to my brother’s and I won’t be back with my own computer for a week. Will they still be up then?

  14. Fighting off a bout of flu with crown royal & the Spill festive list has got me through my bills & invoices. I would have crawled to me bed otherwise. Fantastic list everyone & the sequencing ( you say it’s random?) has pretty much matched my bodies physical roller coaster ride. Highlights for me were Shiv’s, Tin’s (gorgeous vocal), DSD & May1366′s arrived just in time to pick me up off the floor, Barbryn’s & Toffeeboy’s soothed my fevered brow & Ejay’s gave me enough energy to finish & just in time. Still Highlight of ‘em all was Maki’s El Cigala which I remember as one of the best RR moments of the year (South America wasn’t it?) & now I’ll collapse in my crib. Cheers all!

  15. Steve Jobs should hand over the Genius button to the ‘spill. Yet another eclectic mix of unadulterated yuletide joy. Also reminded me of several albums I loved during the year but forgot to consider for this list, like Phosphorescent.

It’s quicker to say which tracks DIDN’T grab me. But that wouldn’t be in the spirit of RR would it? Now awaiting santashoey putting a big sack of no. ones under the tree (go for it Tinnie).

And that shoey no. 2 pick was amazing…

  16. The Festive ‘Spill is sacred, that was another wonderful list, enjoyed discovering Shane’s, Toffee’s and Barbryn’s for the second half.
    Bring on the 1s!

  17. Thanks Fintan. Not expecting much love for the DBT as I don’t even have that much for it myself.

Too tired to listen at my desk tonight, and DsMam draws the line at my taking a laptop to bed, so this will have to wait until the morning.

    G’night all.

  18. Another great listen, loved the jazz from Nilpferd and Aba and Teenage Fanclub, Tracy Thorn and Four Tet were all standouts too…..but all ace. Looking forward to number 1′s!

    • And I owe you for Boo Hewerdine. He would have been a candidate but the album is from last year so he makes the top of the 2010 discovery list.

      • Excellent! I’m really pleased. Boo is a great, under-appreciated singer and songwriter.

And yes, Ed, will deffo be investing in the John Grant album!

      • I have both the albums and several of the singles that Boo Hewerdine recorded with The Bible back in the mid-80s sitting in a box somewhere up in the attic. I always felt they deserved more success than they got. I think I saw them live somewhere in ’85 or ’86. Good to know that he’s still producing such good stuff.

      • Having just re-read that, I feel I should clarify that it’s the records that are sitting in my attic and not Boo himself …

  19. Phosphorescent and Grasscut get particular “How did that pass me by?” new-to-DsD approval. Thanks to whoever posted those (wasn’t looking whilst I listened and updated the WfF&P thread).

    • Been listening via my own player rather than on WP, so have only just, finally, got to the last song (alphabetically by poster).

tfd‘s Mary Gauthier song is right up there with the Grasscut. Ace.
