I don’t buy a huge amount of new music, which I doubt comes as too much of a surprise to people. However, I think that 2010 has been an excellent year for new music, albeit not always produced by new acts.
This year I have been enjoying a few new things, and one or two by people that I maybe should have picked up on earlier.
So, in no particular order, my favourite albums of the year are
Best Coast and Crazy For You
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan‘s Hawk
apologies for the sound quality on that one, but I wanted a video with some action rather than just a shot of the album cover.
Grinderman‘s second outing
Robert Plant‘s Band Of Joy
Gorillaz‘s Plastic Beach
And Warpaint‘s The Fool
I have also enjoyed Robert Fripp and Theo Travis performing some amazing ambient soundscapes on their Live in Coventry Cathedral album, which was recorded in 2009 but released this year. Unfortunately, I can’t find any clips of this.
I was pleasantly surprised by Grinderman 2, must catch up with the new Mark Lanegan and Isobel Campbell’s new one, I loved the first one. You’ve bought more new stuff this year than me
best coast and warpaint have had a lot of play around these parts..
will search out Isobel and Lanegan / grinderman / gorillas too, just not got them yet.
(should sort the Plant out for my Dad for xmas… Celtic influence in the background on that one.. he would like that)
nice list
Warpaint were my number 11 this year!
Actually, I am beginning to come to the conclusion that Isobel and Mark’s Hawk is my favourite album of the year overall.
One album I’ve got (Robert Plant) – has it’s moments (“Monkey” is the standout), but Americana isn’t really my thing.
some great choices there Carole and a good reminder for me to have a listen to the Campbell/Lanegan album. I only have one of their albums together, but it gets quite a lot of play.
I really cannot recommend it highly enough. Superb and a real grower.
Mind you, I have a big girly crush for Bethany Cosentino. You gotta love a girl with a guitar!
You do indeed!
I’ve just checked and the Campbell/Lanegan is on Spotify, so that’s my bedtime listening decided for the night!
Thanks to Carole and panthersan I’m listening to it on Spotify too, excellent album, will be buying it after the festive season.
it was supposed to be sending me off to sleep, but I just listened to the whole of “Hawk” and loved all of it. “Come Undone” and “Hawk” itself were especially ace. No need to “grow”, for me it’s a first time hit!
Thanks for the recommendation Carole as I wouldn’t have thought of listening to it otherwise. Cheers!
That is what I love about the ‘Spill. Finding out about great new music and bands. I would never have heard of Pocahaunted otherwise.
