Peter Gordon – Beginning Of The Heartbreak
The Clash – Magnificent Seven
Rick Springfield – Jessie’s Girl
Chic – Real People
Linton Kwesi Johnson – Di Black Petty Booshwah
La Bionda – I Wanna Be Your Lover
Master Chivero – Black September
The Barracudas – Summer Fun
Hmm… just listening to these, I’m starting to wonder if there is a single LP I actually like which was recorded in 1980.. I’ll get back to you… I would do a winky semicolon thing but it’ll just turn itself into one of those creepy emoticons again…
My first ever DJing gig (early 90s) was with a guy who used to play The Barracudas’ ‘Summer Fun’ every week without fail. It always filled the floor but, to be honest, I’m not sure I ever need to hear it again.
Great stuff from LKJ, La Bionda and Master Chivero though.
hmm…what a difference a decade makes. Kind of with Nilpferd on this, although La Bionda sounded pretty contemporary and the Barracudas are definitely my kind of sound
I’d have picked Port of Entry from Weather Report’s Night Passage, Old Man River from Art Pepper’s Winter Moon, something from Orchestra Baobab’s Bamba, The Clean’s Tally Ho.. and, um…
Ah, I was going to look up No Discrimination, but I had to go and pick up Mara.. that would definitely have been on my list.. who cares if my Strut Nigeria 70 sampler says it was released in 1979.. they just wanted to avoid having to rename the comp Nigeria 70 (and one from 1980) ..
now I just need three more.. (I’d include Three views of a secret from Jaco Pastorius’ Word of mouth, if I didn’t already have him in on the Weather Report track)
Money_(That’s What I Want) flying lizards
dirty mind – prince
once in a lifetime (or something form Remain In Light) – talking heads
Mirror in the Bathroom- the beat
Love Will Tear Us Apart- joy div
kate bush/ madness/ specials/ the cure/ adam and the ants –
Tony Allen formed his own group, recording No Discrimination in 1980
All these were quite close, but I’d put Prince and JD had featured last year for 1979 (although I just realised that so did Chic), Specials and Madness lost out to LKJ and the Clash, another very strong contender to the last minute, almost replacing The Clash was Echo Beach. THought about Tony Allen, but no time to go through the album to pick out a winner. I know there’ll be few fans of Rick Springfield, but he was a must, obviously.
I’m really procrastinating for the 2000 post, don’t have the heart to go all Osbourne on some quality tunes.
Love the Clash, and that’s my absolute favorite LKJ track, musically.
I actually have a secret fondness for Jessie’s Girl. It’s one of those songs you’d hear on the soundtrack to Freaks and GEeks, or Napoleon Dynamite, maybe, and you’d think, “hey, I never respected that, but it’s a very appealing song!” Summer fun IS fun. I liked Black September as well.

Oh, there are a couple after all.. (I’ll shut up now)
Thought they’d be at least one to your taste, this and this almost made it.
Sorry to be hornery…
(I’d have gone for either “this”)
It might start to look like I’m pandering to certain jazz & funk interests, don’t expect anything from Kip Hanrahan’s Tenderness tomorrow!

Can see how Summer Fun would outstay its welcome, after repeated listening, it is fun though. Thanks for listening.

La Bionda was sampled a couple of years ago by Roisin Murphy:

special brew – bad manners
dirty mind – prince
once in a lifetime – talking heads
My Perfect Cousin – undertones
Mirror in the Bathroom- the beat
Love Will Tear Us Apart- joy div
Geno – dexy’s
kate bush/ madness/Siouxsie and the Banshees/ specials/ the cure etc etc Blondie/ grandmaster flash/ adam and the ants – so much fun!
all of it felt like pop – mostly played on the Sunday chart run down (not Prince obviously)
Tony Allen formed his own group, recording No Discrimination in 1980 ( if these *facts* i’m reading are correct)
There’s No One Quite Like Grandma ended the year on a perfect high.
sorry about the typing – i’m trying not to drop the baby – anything that takes two hands is beyond my control.

I first hear Jessie’s Girl on the Boogie Nights soundtrack!
