I Want A Lip – April Stevens
Think – James Brown
Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting – Charlie Mingus
Mule Skinner Blues – Fendermen
Indépendance Cha Cha – Joseph Kabaselé & L’African Jazz
Ooh Poo Pah Doo – Jessie Hill
1960 was a very good year! Loved all of these. Smooth segue on the Cha cha cha from Fendermen (which was unexpectedly wild in the middle!) to L’African Jazz.
Nice Mingus track, a variation on Better get it in your soul. Infectious.
(Track 5 doesn’t play)
An amazing James Brown record. Loved that one for years. SO different and so much better than the Five Royales original.
Listening to the 5 Royales now, you’re right, James Brown more than owns it.
Track 5 should work, agree about the infectious nature of Wednesday night, at his best, Mingus’ beefy tunes give me a kick up the arse.
Danny, never knew Think was a cover!
another ace list Ejay – especially liked the Charlie Mingus and Ooh Poo Pah Doo is ace – I have a cover of it by the Masonics somewhere
the James Brown sounded really ahead of it’s time, can’t believe that came out as early as 1960..
Joseph Kabasele for me – infectious beautiful stuff. Saw the remains of TPOK Jazz play it live last year in Brighton. Marvellous.
