The best releases this month – or at least some of them – no space for Sterns Music: Africa – 50 Years of Independence 1960-2010 (18CD + Book) [Box Set] or the Ninja Tune xx [box set] celebrating their twenty year anniversary.
Enjoy the selection:

Ha, stuck you with another high traffic month didn’t I? Shoeworld is groving to So Percussion, Wrongtom, & TVOTR with some guest stars. Cheers for the break – must be getting busy as the big day approaches. Don’t do a Blimpy on us now, promise?
it was a busy one – didn’t even get to finish them all – but did have critical help from the Ms:
(about Fenech-Soler album that got 4 stars in the paper)
“sounds like the 80′s”
10 seconds pass
“the SHIT 80′s – STOP THIS HELL NOW”
and with that – and I must agree – they must look good in their ‘lurid cardigans and guyliner’ – it got binned for all eternity.
Still a couple of weeks til due date, so any time before or after – but she finishes work today – so I expect equally snap musical judgement from now on. Probably best if I don’t send her out into the garden to dig spuds, if my life is worth living around here.
Bloody hell, look at the size of that!!!

.
.
No, Mrs Shane, not you! I meant the AotM playlist, honest!!!
Section 1:
Miss / Yuck / Hmmm / Intriguing / Yes / Nah / No.
So Blonde Redhead easily top their group and qualify first for the semi-finals.
Section 2:
Mmm er-r-r-r, maybe / ditto / lot of drawn games happening in this group / zzzz*eh? Wha’? Brrr! Who turned on the AC?
Truth prod home a late, coolly-taken but deflected winner, to sneak through on the slimmest of margins. I suspect the teams in Section 3 won’t fear their semi-final opponents.
Section 3:
Goal! / Miss / Beige / Not my bag / Better in the second half / Lovely.
Delicate Icelandic moves unfortunately barged off the ball by some robust Black Mountain tactics: the Canadians go through to face the Truth for a place in the final. Commiserations to the young Olof, whose time will surely come.
Section 4:
No / Oh yeah! / Another hit / Too much fancy footwork with no end product; hauled off well before the end / Meh / Never gonna qualify in this company.
JJR and The Zephyrs couldn’t be split, even after extra-time. The Zephyrs go through on penalties, after Jim Jones has a rush of blood and skies one way over the bar.
I’ll tell Ru – and she’ll come and squash you.
(and bump will give you a kick too!)
who mentioned swallowing a space hopper?
Tune in later for the semi-finals:
Truth vs. Black Mountain
and
Blonde Redhead vs. The Zephyrs
Off for a half-time coffee & pie …
very well done DsD – it was quite a mammoth task- listening to them all.
I’ve placed my bets.
I’ll skip to the semis.. Hildur Gudnadуttir vs Truth vs Vijay Iyer (the first AOTW ever I actually already own, though Vijay is a bit hit or miss- I’d have listed Human Nature) vs Everything Everything.
Everything Everything gets my vote- eclectic and hyperactive, but it works, with a lot of charm.
(Dzihan & Kamien still top the Don’t Explain remix chart, Vijay is a bit too fancy pants at times after all, as DsD remarked, and the Hidur Gudnadyttir is in the end too static, like the Nyman Piano soundtrack. BTW, No Andreya Triana? Despite the Ninja Tunes glut, Lost Where I Belong is a fine album)
Andreya Triana is in my August file (could ov used the technicality that it was released in sept in the US – damn fine album – presume you have the Bonobo tracks with her vocals on from Black Sands)
I did myself a loose ‘Autumn mix’ from the albums and ‘human nature’ fitted in there for me (I had no idea it was a M Jackson song – is it really?) madness.
Hildur Gudnadуttir fits in mixes well – but does indeed need a kick start as a whole album.
thanks for the listen.
Fair enough.. I’m hooked on Stay the same at the moment.. but the whole Bonobo album is brilliant. Human Nature was indeed a MJ song, though Wikipedia claims it was written by Toto’s keyboarder (if that’s not enough to provoke a Blimpy appearance, I’m quitting the ‘Spill!!!). Top of my Human Nature list are of course the monster Miles Davis live versions.
(I’m tipping Black Mountain for the DsD cup)
Stay the same – has chilled and lovely – in the comments next to it when my itunes works.
(if that’s not enough to provoke a Blimpy appearance, I’m quitting the ‘Spill!!!) – don’t say that, contributers are dropping like flies at the moment, aren’t they.
Erm, DsD AotM Champions announcement has been put back until tomorrow.
Initially delayed by a domestic change of plan about transporting the kids from swimming lessons, to tea out, to weekend Brownie Camp, and once home exacerbated by an absolute deluge (. . . of vodka and orange!), the bottom line is that both semi-finals are proving to be too close to call yet.
Goodnight All.
This penalty shoot out could take forever..
I’m going for the team in orange (the team in vodka are having trouble working out who is going to take the shot)
G’night.
Shane, don’t make me laugh: I’ll spill what’s left of my drink.
Truth be told, I really am struggling to whittle four down to one, but I’ve been (still) listening whilst I just completed my London2012 Olympic volunteer application.
Now, though, it’s definitely bedtime.
It’s taken a while, but the bands who will have to try to pull themselves together to contest the meaningless 3rd/4th playoff are Truth and The Zephyrs.
No shame in making it this far, but the Truth song finally caught me not in the right mood for their skittery, Soulsavers-like sound. The Zephyrs song was impressive, but in the semi-final their opponents finally outmanoeuvred the Zs one-dimensional attack.
Get your chips’n'dips ready for tonight’s final (kick-off approx 10pm), which promises lots of atmosphere, tension at the back, twin-pronged male/female vocal attacks and serious midfield guitar play.
It’s Black Mountain vs. Blonde Redhead: two outfits who’ve used remarkably similar tactics to get within sight of this month’s silverware . . .
(I’m enjoying this immensely! Can you tell?)
;o)
this IS exciting…. did wonder when your enjoyment of Truth would waver – I might have duped you with the chosen song – but I’m looking forward to the final – could be close.
At long last we have a DsDecision on which song gets added to my Walkman . . .
. . . both of my finalists!
And that takes some doing I tell you. Since it reached capacity, the 1200 songs in my very full favourite gadget don’t dislodge easily, but Black Mountain and Blonde Redhead re-introduce themselves to the list.
(I can’t remember what their debuts were now, but both artists have been on there before, as both have had DsD RR nominations before now. Certainly My Impure Hair, from BR’s 23, was a nomination I was really disappointed not to get A-listed, I seem to recall.)
Anyhow, enough of the cop-outs, did I pick a winner?
Yes . . .
And the winner of the (flimsy, tarnished, small tinpot) DsD AotM Award is -
Black Mountain – Rollercoaster
This was a really hard one to call, but in the end what I did was put both songs on a repeat play loop, and just get on with other stuff whilst it played around and around. I eventually noticed that my attention kept being drawn back to what was playing at exactly the same point: 2m02s into Rollercoaster. The thirty seconds or so from there had me repeatedly singing / airguitaring / nodding along.
So, no surprise in the end, I suppose. But hey, I haven’t enjoyed one so much in AGES.
Cheers, fellas.
Late to the party, but finally got a chance to listen to these (with the usual caveat that I’m trying to work, so could give everything full attention) – thanks as ever.
Belabouring DsD’s football metaphor:
Group A saw some fine performances from the cultured Hildur Gudnadуttir and the energetic Neon Indian. Runner-up was Marnie Stern. But its the pre-tournament favourites who progress: Blonde Redhead.
Group B was a cagey affair. Wildbirds & Peacedrums have the pedigree to edge through.
Group C – the group of death. Black Mountain – potential finalists – and Everything Everything can count themselves unlucky to have come up against Olof Arnalds with loan signing Bjork on top form.
Group D – good to see Tricky making a comeback, but The Zephyrs breeze through (see what I did there).
Olof Arnalds went on to beat Blonde Redhead in the final – on the strength of this track. But presumably not every track on the album features Ms. Guðmundsdóttir…?
nope that is the only appearance of Ms. Guðmundsdóttir sadly – but still an enjoyable album.
glad you had fun.
I already own the Wildbirds and Peacedrums album so I think you know where my loyalties lie.
bit of a cheat really as the two mini albums that make up this release have been out a while now – glad there is another fan about.
Gareth1 is another fan. We’re off to see them again next month at Union Chapel.
they are great live – gig going is on hold for me at the moment – other wise I’d be right down there with you.
enjoy.
Isaac made me turn off Beat Antique because it would give him nightmares.
sorry Isaac… i love it though, but I see what he means.
