Groovin

I posted Groovin out on Life by Ken Parker this weekend to universal acclaim

Okay, so nobody noticed at all. AND I’M FINE WITH THAT! but I was thinking about the whole groovin/groovy phrase and wondering where it had started. I’ve decided to make a collabo spotify list instead of dropboxing, but I’m willing to open a folder there as well. I put songs I have in my iTUnes (thanks for the cannonball adderly, Nilfperd!) and a few choice numbers I probably will never own.

Shake your groove thing

Groove it up, baby!

  1. Hey!!! Had to stop myself at 5 from my list ’cause this could be huge. Was gonna make it 6 with Groovy Kind of Love by Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders but the spotify version is not the original. Not sure I remember where I first heard the phrase. 1963 or 1964 if I had to guess. Gonna be fun!!

    • Thanks, Fintan. I think it’s fun, too. Now, to define “groovy.”

      JUST KIDDING!

We can open up a dropbox folder for just the right version. I’ll get on it tomorrow.

  2. Good evening, steen.

I don’t want to start a potential threadjack, but your faux-whinge about no-one noticing, combined with both magicman’s frustration at his ignored nom (which I have to admit I still haven’t got to to check out), and a couple of my own tumbleweed nominations had led me into a mash of thoughts that this post has finally distilled, namely –

Was this week’s mothership topic the most divisive in RR history?

What I mean by that is … was it a topic that revealed each of our fundamental core musical ‘loves’, to the exclusion of other things we merely ‘like’ ? It shouldn’t have been: the topic, after all, was Songs ABOUT Euphoria, NOT Euphoric Songs, but let’s face it, that’s where we (almost) all strayed at some point, isn’t it? The desire to feel the joy/ecstasy/exhilaration kind of took over, and as that is primarily a selfish moment, I got the feeling we all ended up ploughing our own furrows more than normal?

You know, when I started this, I had a point to make, but I’m buggered if I can find it now in the pool of Southern Comfort-soaked verbal diarrhoea I’ve dumped in this comment box

    • Rich, I think I know what you mean. I wouldn’t use the word “divisive” exactly (partly because I’m not confident that I can spell it correctly).

I have had this same feeling with many a subjective subject. I know I felt it with sexy songs and songs that make you cry. I think this feeling (of ploughing our own furrows) is one of the strengths and one of the frustrations of a subjective subject. We all feel passionately about our own nominations, but it gives us less time to listen to other peoples’. In the long run, though, I think it’s a good thing to have a topic once in a while that makes us passionately champion the songs we pick. And the couple of new songs I did look up (and honestly, we don’t have time for that with any subject any week) made it worthwhile.

    • DsD-

I thought that there was a lot of wiggle room in the rubric this week.

      Natural highs, but
-although there might be some tunes that evoke joyous emotion-bursts of more ambiguous provenance, if you catch my drift

So really this week the focus should be on the feeling itself, the abstract adrenaline rush you get at random moments
-And it might be hinted at rather than spelled out

So i think people can be forgiven for interpreting it in a myriad of ways. There were a lot of noms too, maybe someone with more free time than most of us have could actually give them all a listen. So picking and choosing really can’t be helped. For some, they listen from the box first. I happen to go by the blog, didn’t even get to scratch the surface there, let alone get to the box this week.

      • I should say that a couple of the reasons that i go by the blog first is that it’s just easier for me, because i work at the computer, to take a quick break every now and then to post a nom or listen to one. But even more so, because a lot of posters don’t have access to the box, or just drop in to post a nom or two, and I find a lot of good newtome’s that wouldn’t be in the box. If i get to the box, it’s usually not till Sun or Mon after my work week is over.

  3. My champion SA gospel song is further down the Spill if you’re interested (it’s worth it) he whinged…
I also ha the feeling this week that there was a song just outside of my consciousness which I couldn’t quite remember…a euphoric shadow of an earworm…and I never did get it. Perhaps it was a mirage. Paerhaps there were many of them jostling for position and some of them did get nommed.
But it was a crowded week. I loved the dropbox, but didn’t find time for many links. Which was indeed my original point.
Is Nomad’s “Just a Groove” in your collabo Steen ? I can’t get spotify for reasons I don’t understand.

  4. May have been that most latched onto songs that evoked personal euphoria rather than songs about euphoria. & that makes it very personal & difficult to translate/relate.

Did have time to go through the box, but for the 3rd week in a row, struggled to find 10 newtome’s to dond out of around 150 or so tunes. Am sure I could find plenty of donds for tunes that I already know – but, aside from being friendly, don’t see the point in that if my main purpose for playing is to find new stuff.

    It’s probably just a phase.

  5. Morning all.

re “divisive” – yes, definitely the wrong word, as is “insular” which is the one I backspaced out before posting. “Personal” is probably the best option, but still isn’t quite what I was aiming for. Thanks, ladies.

re “time to listen” – always my problem, that! Whilst the RR window is open, I am guilty most weeks of trawling my own collection for nominations rather than listening to ‘Box contents or the collabo. Having been messed about badly with work this week (the end result being the Monday morning cancellation of all courses! GRRR!!) I will have time today and tomorrow for a more thorough listen than usual of songs I’m going to need to cheer me up more than usual. Cheers, gents.

  6. I posted my contributions in the playlist, although there were a couple SPotty didn’t have, kudos for the inclusion of a Solid Gold clip!
I definitely agree that subjective topics lead to more insular RRing, also time is the issue, these days, I don’t even make the time to look for my own potential noms.
