We bumped our heads against the clouds…

I don’t get in here much, but I hope this contribution will be welcome. In bed with a summer cold, looking for a summer music cure to enable me to get up and make some long-awaited rhubarb and ginger jam (yes, SatanKidneyPie, it’s coming, really it is) I found this…

Slate magazine has included a page about what they called ‘McSweeney’s mix CD for the Obama era’ – WE BUMPED OUR HEADS AGAINST THE CLOUDS enclosed with the July/August print issue of Believer: “THE 2010 BELIEVER MUSIC ISSUE CD”

Notes by Chuck Lightning: “For black artists, our new president has meant the start of a different age. This music aims to capture it” and others.

Most of it is great, which – coming from someone who mostly doesn’t ‘get’ hip-hop – suggests easier listening than most. (A couple sounded dreadful to my ears first time round, but you never know until you try a few times). I’ve tried to find all the available free plays of these tracks, some videos, some downloads and a spotify. I’ll add the 5  missing tracks when I find them – or you can if you do. I particularly like Nina Simone covering Alice Cooper, but then I’m an old fashioned girl.

  1. Hallo cauliflower! Sorry you’re feeling poorly – have you tried an infusion of ginger in hot water (before it goes in the jam, preferably)? My sister swears by it.

  2. Hi cauli! Nice to hear from you; unfortunately I’m off on holiday on Monday, and have a stack of work to get through first, so I’ll just have to hope this is still here when I get back…

  3. Cauli; Long time, glad you’re back, I’m on the verge of picking a large bunch of rhubarb for an ill friend who loves such things plus I’m in the midst of making a large batch of mango/plum/apple/tamarind chutney. It’s nice to find another McSweeney/Slate fan, I haven’t played the list yet, possibly tomorrow.

  4. Well done Cauliflower, I’m looking forward to hearing this. Hope you feel better soon – whisky with hot milk does it for me, you could try making hot ginger “tea”, too:

    4-6 thin slices raw ginger
    1 1/2 – 2 cups water
juice from 1/2 lime, or to taste
1-2 tbsp honey or to taste

    Preparation:
Peel the ginger and slice thinly to maximize the surface area (gives more flavour)

Boil the ginger in water for at least 10 minutes. For a stronger and tangier tea, allow to boil for 20 minutes or more, and use more slices of ginger.

Remove from heat and add lime juice and honey to taste.

They sell hot ginger at the Peace Gardens in Sheffield, it nearly blows my head off but it gets rid of the cobwebs!

  5. wonderful post cauliflower. I listened to half a dozen of the tracks and ordered the magazine for $25 including shipping because I’m slighty mad.
So thanks for that, particularly Of Montreal. Wow !
Also have been a big Obama watcher since 3 years ago

  6. Hey Spillers… thanks for good wishes and recipes. I am mainlining ginger as I type, and have eaten so much of the the jam ginger that another market trip will be necessary tomorrow. I’m feeling better, but not right, so convalescing, dozing in between trying to empty the TV hard drive of old movies before my mum comes to stay – she’ll need it for Corrie : (

TFD – hi! I’m still getting my RR social CD together, promise…
Abahachi – I’m not completely au fait with this blog tech but I’m pretty sure it’s not going anywhere… hope hols are good.
TF – tamarind and McSweeney’s, doesn’t get much better!
alimunday – I’m having to steer clear of ‘the drank’ cos I’m already demented and wobbly, but will bear the recipe in mind as soon as I’m back on my feet.
Magicman – good for you! Glad you liked it. I’m still toying with ordering, will decide when tax return is complete. Let me know what the missing track sound like.

  7. Hello Cauliflower!!

The music looks good. I haven’t had a chance to listen yet, but I’m looking forward to it.

My recipe for ginger tea includes honey, lemon and Cayenne. Seems like there’s a different recipe for every ‘Spiller!!

    Hope you feel better soon.
