A track from RJD2′s instrumental hip-hop album In Rare Form, which I’m enjoying at the moment.
This particular track is reworked from Quincy Jones’ Money Runner, as a poster points out.

there’s me mixing together:
Silver Fox,
Chicken-Bone Circuit and
Shot In The Dark…
so I can get a RJD2 into hunting and you go and post this!
..or you could just nom Big Game, from the above mentioned album..;-)
now – that would be too easy.. I’m in- making this difficult for myself mood!
by the way – those tracks make me wanna groove – ACE.
(the re working of Quincy Jones re-affirming why I hated certain sterile tracks on the Ariel Pink album – even more)
Cheers, shane! On the Money Runner Youtube thread a poster seems to be enraged that RJD2 has used the track without crediting it. I think he did enough to it, though, to make it a stand-alone track.
Interesting, that one- I guess with instrumental hip-hop I’m always assuming they’ve looped some seventies soul/funk in there somewhere, the fun bit is tracking it down, so I don’t really want to have a full credits listing… I’m not Quincy Jones, admittedly..
I liked the RJD2 a lot, Nilpferd. I think instrumental hip hop is fascinating.
We probably need an instrumental hip-hop combi post at some stage. MF Doom, Madlib, DJ Shadow and the RZA Ghost Dog soundtrack would definitely make the cut. (Someone ruthless would probably need to edit my ninja tunes selection though.)
I’d throw in a few tracks from Petestrumentals and maybe a J Dilla or two.
Vocal samples are allowed, right? Just no actual lyrics?
I’ll start stockpiling things…
Yes! definitely vocal samples. I think what’s interesting is the way the noises are combined…it’s like a whole new musical form unto itself.
Saneshane and Ejay should be in on this, too. (and anyone else that wants, obviously) so we can make the world’s longest instrumental hip hop post in history.
this would be good – if I ever get any time I’ll join in…. a few instantly spring to mind.
We definitely need some Shoey input too, plus anyone else who’s interested. One of us should just pop up a post like Shane’s Ninja Tunes series, the others can then follow on. I’ll have a think about it and may put up something next week.
that was a great series – at least five of us enjoyed it!
now Wot defines Instumental Hip(e)dy Hop?
I’m lost in a chilled grove of possible ninja, electro, ebm, sample based djing – crate digging..afro beat… what have you… etc. oh.. you say concentrate on work.. where do I start.. where do I stop?
man….. if it’s got scratching it’s in.
Perfect.. just transplant your chilled grove to the ‘Spill and we have a starter..
If it’s got a beat, preferably some kind of a sample but at least isn’t entirely played live by musicians it’s in but I guess it’s mainly a You’ll Know It When You Hear It kind of thing.. I won’t be bugging people with “technically that ain’t instrumental hip-hop fella” comments, anyway..
