Thursday evening. A few hours to go till MMF. Oh, the anticipation!
Are you, like me, more of the nervous, jittery F5 hammering brigade? Bit like the guy in the Guinness advert…
Or are you more like Carly? Let’s have a singalong and just wait till the blog’s up…
I’m a nervous F5er
Oh, most definitely a button pusher.
Best ‘anticipation’ line in a song must be the one in Sweet Transvestite, from the Rocky Horror Show (or Picture Show) soundtrack:
So come up to the lab,
And see what’s on the slab.
I see you shiver with anticip………………..pation
Near the end of the link…
I’m the cool sort, take a punt and.. oh, look, there’s the A-list and the new theme!
Zenlike calm & tranquility after last week’s grumpiness (could all change, however, if a theme is spotted before kick-off – with luck PMac will be better than BP at plugging a leak)
Well. A list is up (I got my first ever PaulMac A) and new topic would appear to be hunting. Of course, after last week’s leak, he may be having us on!
** Deep breath. Count to 10 **
Remember to breathe out after!!
*mops shoey’s brow*
so we are hunting leeks?
and reviving shoey, with large breaths!
Hunting leeks. Chasing rhubarb. Stalking strawberries. Love it. I have a couple of Spanish noms that can wait. No F5ing for me tonight!!
Watch those leeks, Shane; they can be vicious! Take it from a Welshman who knows….
so vicious – you start running and don’t stop ’til Switzerland.
Hee hee, Shane! Lots of leeks over here, though – no escape! Known as ‘poireaux’ here in the francophone part; no idea what the Schweizerdeutsch call ‘em. Langenzwiebeln, probably…
** turns blue, recovers, grabs pencil to prepare list**
Pencil? Paper? Do what any self respecting list maker does. Prepare your post in the comments box from last week’s thread and copy and paste without reading the guru’s brief. (Works better than Word as there’s no apostrophe and other issues!)
ah – that’s how you do it!
Will restrain from listing, but you will find Can’s Hunters & Collectors & something from the band Hunters & Collectors in my trad weekly ‘Spill playlist.
Ha, that reminds me of annoying an aussie ex-punk flatmate by continually referring to his favourite band as “Hunters & Gatherers”.
You know I seriously don’t remember seeing ANY of the songs that made the A-List being recommended. I don’t even recognise any of them as songs I’ve ever heard of. Is it just me???
I definitely remember the Yves Montand as I donded it, no particular recollection of any of the rest.
Not wishing to start moaning again – as I said, I really didn’t know any decent songs about bicycles, and it would be too much to expect that any of the songs I discovered as a result of the theme would get chosen, much as I currently love them – but this does tend to confirm a sneaking feeling I have about the current regime, namely that the actual recommendations don’t seem to count for as much as they used to. In the past, there was a sense that the Guru could almost be talked into listing something, at any rate in the B list with a mention for the eloquence of the nominator. These days, I think, one of the reasons why the A list seems so often to come as a slightly unpleasant surprise is that I rarely have any recollection of the songs being suggested at the time. Okay, Guru’s privilege to choose on any basis he wants, but if recommendations don’t count for much it does tend to reinforce the behaviour of the MFF List Brigade…
For the last three themes I’ve actually put some effort in over on RR – It might be my odd effort – but for someone who will take 15 minutes just to type out this reply (as I’ve said before I see letters in mirror image – that’s why images are easier)
But I got a comment about my posts in the write up and so did EJD (and two B’s for Hats) and Then an A in Manual Labour – for Cvalda, plus mentions from people about enjoying the find. Then another A for John Cale…. I nominated it twice just to make sure, because I love it so (and I was pissed) – the effort has counted.
So I’ve noticed a right up-turn in my posts being noticed -eloquence isn’t the right word – but individuality has paid off.
My team is having a good run – that’s all – it’ll soon change and someone else’s style will connect for a while.
I guess you’re right; it’s terribly subjective, and I’ve obviously noticed the people recommending songs that I knew or connected with a lot more than I noticed things that didn’t quite click, and then if the latter get into the list they seem like they’ve come out of the blue… Just ignore me.
Congrats on the A-listing, Maki.
Thanks shoey. that makes three!! Half a dozen B’s with PaulMac. A couple of A’s with Rob. This feels like a breakthrough. Also made the B last week so this is the first time I’ve listed two weeks in a row. (Interestingly 2 of my 3 A’s have been in foreign!!)
I recommended A Bicyclette (in a list damn it) and it got a few donds. I think there’s a couple from Lambre that were properly nommed as well.I have to say I don’t know many of them, though so I’m looking forward to the spotify before passing judgement.
I can’t have been paying attention. Congrats maki
BTW, is the fact that 40% of the a-list songs have the same title a record? Marconius, are you there….?
I nommed John Cale – classic lovely track
and was beaten to St.Vincent so donded it.
blimpy nipped in with Rims – between nappy changes.
Look at me (I got to read the whole blog for the first time since 1000 post became normal)
Lambretinha (got st.vincent) so donded it.
Lambre also got Helvetia, so that’s two for him.
There may be some Mogwai too, but that’s too bleeding obvious, but good none the less. God, I hate these leaks – really spoils the kick-off. There may need to be some whining.
I haven’t done a list for ages and ages. Please let me have this small pleasure tonight.
I’ll hold off for 5 mins, but we don’t tend to overlap much anyway, do we? Happy F5ing!
So which of you two is dropboxing already?
people who do lists…. tsck!
matt pond must be tinny quietly nipping in on dropbox.. and subtly not going for his ‘Hunter’
I’m not a dropboxer. Spotify and YouTube for me.
No whining! We just all have to agree not to make lists. Although I think Mnemonic is allowed to do whatever she wants, because she’s always very restrained.
mine was a joke after I listed 10’000 last saturday night..
I’ve been good so far.. this theme!
This’ll entertain you all for the next 4 minutes:
G’night
Up until recently, I was a frantic refresher, but recently, I’m becoming more and more relaxed, checking in at 10 past midnight. I’m actually in between moods at the moment, it all depends if i see RR as a neurotic attempt to persuade a man I’ve never met to include songs in a newspaper column, OR as a forum to chat, share and discover music among friends.
I think I’m heading your way Ejay and I like your thinking!
Trouble is, my knowledge is generally so mainstream that, to have any chance of a listing, I have to be in there sharpish…
I hope it’s hunting for anything, and not just hunting animals. You know…searching songs.
I’ll be buggered if I can’t nom: Last Of The Great Bassline Hunters
I”d dond it based on name alone!
Agree, Steen. Last thing we want is a ted Nugent A list! We’ll have to read the brief and then lean on the guru!
… a-a-a-a-n-n-n-d the first DsD nomination three minutes after that comment was from –
The Nuge!
Sorry to upset you, Maki, though I’m not sorry I nominated the song.
It’ll be my only Nugent Nom though. If tinny was serious that he’d thought of some songs, he can have ‘em.
Not upset, DsD. One nom’s fine a complete A list would be , ahem, another thing.
Just to show you all how cool I’ve suddenly become about this, I’m typing this after midnight and thinking, just thinking, about hitting F5 on the other tab!
What is f5?
Top of the keyboard. Automatically refreshes the page. (In windows – you’re on a mac so I don’t know if it’s the same for you).
cmd-R for us Mac users.
