  1. Well i know which one’s my favourite already, I’m in love with big boi’s album. The question is who gets my 2nd and 3rd vote.

  2. Thanks for doing this, Shoey (where do you get the time and energy?) Just had a very, very quick run through which probably didn’t do many tracks justice, but I only voted for one – is that allowed?

  3. Hold on. I haven’t actually been overwhelmed by anything Paul Motian has done for the last twenty years, but at least I’ve heard of him…

    • Don’t think he does overwheming, but glad he does what he does. Mind you last years On Broadway 5 was pretty innovative (despite the title).

  4. I’ve voted for the chrome-hooved books in motion. The Roots track is a bit disappointing- is it representative?

    • Well, they don’t all have Joanna Newsome on em. Think it’s pretty good, but not really my area of expertise – you’ll have to wait until Steen shows up.

    • I’d say the Roots album is a strong one from what I’ve heard, but I haven’t given it my full attention so can’t give a proper opinion.

    • I did not even know the Roots had a new album out, I’m very embarrassed to say! I must be even more out of it than I thought this summer. Excited to hear it, though.

      Damn.

oh, and thanks for doing this Shoey – I like the cover – collage.

      • Quite pleased with me collage. A bit fiddly figuring out acceptable file formats & sizes. Then it’s easy peasy. Good potential for cover quizes as Proudfoot is MIA. Not that MIA. Unless…. Could it be?

  5. I Am Kloot (unsurprisingly) got one of my votes.

Grasscut & The Books got the other two – both very intriguing, and absolutely unknown to me.

    • They nearly lost out to the The Acorn (another one I think you’ll like – there’s an Elbow connection), but His Saneness insisted.

There are 3 volumes of Books – all wonderful. This is the 1st from them in quite a while.

The Grassroots may be my album of the year so far. Electronic with lots of found sounds and a great organic feel to it.

    • now DsD – don’t you have the Dark was the night compilation? (I don’t by the way – so I could be wrong) but isn’t cello song done by Books?
you would just think Jose Gonzalez listening to it.

      ah here it is:

  6. Argh, can’t decide who gets the last vote between Menomena and Perfume Genius. I want to hear more from Chrome Hoof, it feels like being Tango’ed.

  7. I went for Big Boi, Chrome Hoof and and Perfume Genius in the end. Very honourable mention for Julian Lynch, Sia, Menomena, I am Kloot, Fol CHen and Paul Motian.

  8. Grasscut -British movie music composer Andrew Phillips often captures stealthily on his mobile phone friends talking nonsense in the street:

Popular usage of the term muppet from EOTWQs.. re-done in his track MUPPET… listen and watch here:

  9. Wow, this is, like, totally difficult! I like so many of these! Big Boi and the Roots, obviously, but I also like Grasscut, Perfume Genius, I am Kloot, Julian Lynch…there were more, I can’t remember at the moment.

  10. Starbucks trying to flog Sia again?

I would like to hear more Julian Lynch (but might get weirded out by the track Ruth, my sister.

quite enjoyed the Far track – in a rock way… but probably not me all in all.

Books – i always think of as a more pleasant Negativland (from what I’ve heard) shall investigate further.

Roots – felt disappointing, dumped at least 50% of the album instantly.. not their high standard. (probably needing to sell some albums, rather than get critical acclaim…)

Grasscut – ninja tune innit! the tracks I have are ace.. shall invest in some vinyl eventually.

I like Fol Chen .. haven’t got into this album yet tho.. but I’m sure I will.

Perfume Genius – bit Final Fantasy is it? would like to hear the whole thing.

Menomena – got this album by accident.. and love it, good use of instruments and little surprises.. sound songs and interesting lyrics.

I AM KLOOT – had a listen when DsD pointed out the G was streaming it.. it’s more of the same with strings – no it’s not going to break them through.. but the fans are going to lap it up as ever. Quality songwriting and brilliant story telling…I obviously love it.

School of 7 – boy I’m sadly deflated.. the tracks I’d been sent were so promising. then the album turns up.. even the extravagant packaging seams half finished… that’s not right – it is finished.. just not enough of it to make it really special.. the same with the songs. (it might grow on me the last album seeped in)

I might like wounded lion – sounds like a kind of shambles, that I could get into.

    I’ve missed some haven’t I.
    excellent work as ever shoey…

(and really you don’t have to listen to me.. I was bigging up School of Seven Bells – would have swapped that for Martina Topley Birds reworking of her own tracks or Liz Phairs fecking hilarious album or … The Acorn, I should have a listen to.. though the album I have hasn’t grabbed me or… okay too many choices!)

    • Liz P, sounds fun. Swapsies?

The unplugged Topless-Bird nor the Zola team-up didn’t grab me 1st go round. Same fate befell The Acorn, you can tell it’s quality, but it’s probably going to gather dust like their last one did, until they get some dedicated attention. Tough to do when there is so much instant gratification to be had.

Great thing about the Books is their sense of humour & use of voices that sound so familiar, but you can’t place why.

It is getting harder to make the picks, now that this series has grown. It now resembles one of those freebie taster CD’s that your friendly record shop would throw you if you bought lots of stuff. Still fun, but great to have a month off once in a while to keep it fresh.

      • I’m chucking Liz P in for you Shoey – be warned – you might listen with chin hitting keyboard… that’s all I’m going to say. And if you know nothing – please don’t read up.. just have a play.

It’ll be in – in about half hour.

M T-B washed over me as well.. Damon Album suggested she did it stripped back – she might have mis-understood him.
But my Ms has been playing tracks out.. and I’m quite enjoying it now…

Zola Jesus team up has been getting late night plays.. I’m looking forward to the beefed up Album.. based on the EP Stridulum out soon.

        back soon.

  11. “Still fun, but great to have a month off once in a while to keep it fresh”

I’ll book in September to take over.. before the next sane is born… not sure how much time I will get next month… but I will send you samples of interest.

What I find is trying to make it a bit more rounded.. I keep drifting towards MY safe zones.

  12. Many thanks to shoegazer for this excellent service. Commendations all round. Do you get sent reviews copies of everything ? How does the AOTM list get compiled ? Where’s M.I.A. ? etc etc

I actually did not like most of these, so the voting was reasonably easy. There’s always four in a vote of three though innit ?

I did like The Books but I’m not sure how often I would listen to it. Good stuff though. I really liked Paul Motian especially the title of the song. But ace playing. Grasscut is the standout so far and I’m now on Menomena – I Am Kloot still to come. Roots disappointing, ditto Big Boi.
Hmm I’m liking Menomona…yup finished listening now and Menomona steal a vote from The Books.
I Am Kloot is good (I can tell!) but not a favourite of mine – probably fifth out of 15 though !

  13. AOTM candidates are chosen at my capricious whim. Do tend to exclude those who don’t need any extra attention (like M.I.A). Kloot only got in cause Shane insisted. Am open to bribes. Poll only seems to work if you use all your votes at one time.
