Talking of people who shouldn’t wear lycra…

I don’t know what’s got into everyone this week; I love this theme. Okay, it’s partly because I love cycling, so am eager to remedy the fact that my record collection seems to have a remarkably lacuna in that department, but did everyone who enjoyed the Hats theme do so because they loved hats? I don’t think so. I’ve already discovered a couple of really great new tracks, and so I felt called upon to put together a little podcast to celebrate the wonders of bikes and songs about them…

  1. Nice one, makes me want to drag out the old Drahtesel and do my Jacques Tati impression down the Theodor Heuss Str.

  2. BLOODY HELL! I had a Gresham Flyer!! Blue, with white tyres, and that “boot” compartment on the back. Aw, now I have to find out which of my mam or dad has got the photo evidence.

  3. Thanks Aba, Unfortunately I’ve only listened to this in the background because of some work that needs doing; but the mix of music and info is great; if the work with the Romans doesn’t work out and that late-night Radio 3 gig is ever vacant, then I’d definitely recommend you.

  4. Just got round to listening to this. Particularly like the Christ track.

I’m a relatively new convert to the sport of cycling and absolutely love le Tour. For the same reasons as you describe, but I’ve never been able to articulate it as well as that. That commentary on the Stephen Roche climb made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, having only read about that epic battle, but never seen any of it.

  5. You can see footage from the Channel 4 coverage on YouTube, which is where I recorded the commentary; just google Roche La Plagne. Interestingly, until I reviewed it recently, I was convinced that it was a foggy day, which was why Roche’s arrival was such a surprise, whereas clearly it was because they had only a couple of cameras for the whole race. Today, of course, the whole audience would have known exactly what was going on – as would Delgado, by ear-link from his team car. One bit of technology that I really do regret.
